>>106805769Did you just update your Firefox for the first time in a couple of years? That has been there for a while. While I hate ads and "sponsored content" with a passion, I also see why an organisation like Mozilla needs money - we all do. However, I don't agree with how they actually use the money they're getting.
>>106805769a trigger for autismos.oh look, it werks
It's not the fact that they include ads which irritates me - it's the manipulative language which they use. They want the user to feel like a bad person if they uncheck "Support firefox". It carries the message "if you uncheck support firefox, you don't care about building a better web, you sick fuck".Then "recommended stories" curated by the "mozilla family" is just plain marketing bullshit. They clearly don't care about the user because otherwise they'd make it an opt-in during the setup process, but instead they don't make it clear that you can disable it, so most users probably just leave it on.Manipulating your users for financial gain is fine as long as it's "to build a better web".
>>106806211as opposed to chrome, where you can't turn it off...
>>106806344you must remember you're smarter than a retardwhy do all this? it's so that they get money from retardswhat happens if they don't get the money? mozilla loses and chrome's the browser everyone will have to useat least they give the option and very plainly, if you don't read every setting of a program as important as your browser, it's your faultas long as you don't have power, you have to sacrifice, and that sacrifice is to shit on retards, not everyone will have the same freedom and enjoyment, but the barrier is something as small as reading the settings page

>>106806471I think it's useful to state the obvious, "hur durr ads bad firefox bad" is vague and meaningless. >>106806457I see what you mean. Privacy minded people are always going to check these settings anyway. Giving normies the option to choose gives them the opportunity to mindlessly reject it without *actually* caring, which benefits nobody. The problem isn't specifically Chrome or Firefox or whatever, it's more of a social problem, people lack critical thinking or simply don't give a fuck. The browsers are simply adapting to the market, like any business does, ethics don't come into it.I will always be rooting for the open-source alternatives though in the blind hope that society can recover from the downhill spiral where people are rewarded for being retarded.I am reminded of this thread which motivated me to switch away from Fedorahttps://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/TelemetryBecause of the precedent which it sets. If this is even being considered, then what other crap are they going to bundle in the future - after I'm already fully dependent on the ecosystem for my workflow? What are they going to sneak in without me noticing?
>>106806248Then change it and open a pull request

>>106805810>>106806217
But still, all things considered, I'll still go with Firefox. Google has way too much of a monopoly now and they're abusing it. Like how they deliberately gimped extensions so you can't have effective adblocking anymore. Ublock origin is one of many big reasons it's worth using firefox instead of chrome

>>106809680Are you suggesting that because there are ads on websites - it's common sense that there would be ads directly in the browser too?You could take it a step further - since there are ads embedded in the web browser, why not have them directly embedded into the OS? In fact, we see ads in YouTube videos, what if we started embedding them directly into the monitors? Samsung have the right idea with their new ads embedded into the refridgerator. Meta are going to turn their glasses into something like the movie "They Live". You see ads every day, why not embed them directly into your fucking eye sockets? Here, I've made a design for the optimal monitor to extract value from consumers. It utilises the 21:9 aspect ratio, but only 16:9 is the actual desktop, the rest is ads.
>used one of those custom homepage >edited it to just have common sites i use>haven't seen the default firefox homepage for yearsMaybe I should look into remaking it sometime.
This is a good basis for custom homepageshttps://github.com/glanceapp/glancehttps://github.com/glanceapp/glance/blob/main/docs/preconfigured-pages.md
