waiting for T470 & X270 prices tank once W10 is no longer supported
>>
>>106812235
You think that'll be a thing?

X270 seems like an enticing upgrade from an x230. T480 even more so considering that it's libreboot compatible.

X280 would be the best replacement considering it has a similar small profile, but I don't believe that it's libreboot compatible, nor if any other newer models will ever get support. Even then, the T480 doesn't have full one-to-one functionality either, though I'm unsure how trivial the differences are.

I'm not *that* worried about glownigger spooks, but having a custom BIOS/UEFI is a nice thing to have.

I have a latitude myself and find them to be pretty damn nice, I was using mine specifically for work until I installed Linux so I can dualboot and I installed a mobile broadband card to make use of a spare phone line I had.
If I didn't have a desktop I'd probably use it as my daily driver for everything

There's already patches for partial T460s and E470 support so other models from 2018 and earlier don't sound like much of a stretch. 2019 and later is a different story because of the newer, unbroken ME.

See if you can get a T580 with similar specs. T590 is gimped in terms of modularity because they cheaped out and used the same motherboard as in the smaller T490. Small battery, soldered wifi, only one SSD, etc.

hello /tpg/
i bought a thinkpad x270 a few years ago, and one of the batteries always sucked but recently i've gotten popups about how defective it is, so i'm looking to replace it
where can I find a good 45N1127 battery if i'm in europe, and does it have to be an official lenovo one
>>
>>106827028
Used OEM ones should be easy to find on your local Craigslist clone. 24 Wh for around 15€, 72 for around 40€. Not much reason to pay more for a dodgy aftermarket one unless you live in the middle of nowhere.

I ordered a ThinkPad X9 15.
Wondering if I made a good choice.
I've used basically every ThinkPad since the 20 series.
My reasons for getting the X9 15 were: centered keyboard (numpad sucks dick), no trackpoint while retaining the clickpad, good battery life, high refresh display with good response times, etc.

pretty sure an m.2 cant fit in a msata connector slot though without an adapter and then theres size to consider

Battery help?

I was using my t420 on battery and suddenly the laptop shut down. The laptop can't turn on if i don't put it on AC now. The battery still shows a charge percentage on the OS but when i plug in the charger the battery LED shows three green flashes and then one shorter orange flash and then it shows nothing (while it would usually continue to be either orange or green depending on charge).
Is this how thinkpad batteries die? The overall capacity was still at 78% of the design capacity. If it's really dead what's the brand i should look for a new one?

i'm not the anon but i was looking at how to make DIY batteries for my t420 and found this:
https://old.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/wru5kj/
I haven't tried this, but i defintely will once i get good at soldering (the only soldering job i did is a 3000mAh lithium battery for my PSP)
we should definitely make some kind of wiki for diy batteries in general. Thinkpads aren't the only good laptops of the past, i have some business model HP as well that need some cells.
>>
>>106812069
Is it just me or are new thinkpads getting a bit more modular and user upgradeable? The new p1 allows the user to fix usb C ports, speakers, battery, storage and RAM are not soldered. Here's hoping.
>>
>>106837258
I don't think I've seen that one specifically but I did see quite a few of these. Much like your link, they mostly all focus on the battery cells themselves when that's kind of the easy part, if you can solder. The tricky part is the BMS.
From what I could get, some BMS have to be disconnected a certain way or else they blow a protective fuse you can't easily replace and some can lock down the battery and simply refuse to charge or discharge regardless of the cells condition. Info on each specific BMS for each specific laptop model is scarce and of course you can't buy replacement BMS, so the only way to have an original one on your "new" battery is already having one on your old battery.
>>
speaking of batteries, is it possible in Linux to set charging limits, and can I make the CPU use power from the wall when plugged in instead of using the battery as a middle man

Just saying I love my T14 G3 (AMD variant). I just fucking hate the whitelist on the extra M.2 slot...

>>106812069
I am currently running on my desktop computer:

Windows 7 without an antivirus or system updates newer than 2013 ( I am a power-user and consider that bloat)

AMD Athlon x4 860K
Nvidia GTX 1050ti
16 gigs of DDR3 RAM

I use this machine for, on the daily:

Small minimalist PHP Web development with Codium.exe, and XAMPP
Minecraft Alpha gaming and development (Eclipse IDE)
Team Fortress 2008 (not daily)
The majority of my workflow is done in a USB stick. The majority of my shit on my computer is not on the system disk.
The things that aren't on my portable drive are only in my system because they just aren't portable. Codecs, shell replacements, etc. XAMPP and f.lux which don't like USBs for some reason..
This results in a very light C drive footprint when this approach is applied to a fresh install of Windows.

People say it's "weak" or "underpowered", but I do everything I need without problems. I have Supermium and Pale Moon open with tens of tabs and I do not experience problems even with my pagefile disabled.

I express interest in the Thinkpad T480, but I own another laptop, the Precision 7520. I am dissatisfied with its strange Linux support, battery life, and weak keyboard, and I dislike the bloat Dell forces if you wish to install drivers.
T480 looks nice but also less bulky than the 7520 and thus less durable. Might have a better keyboard though given my 7520's E key fucking popped off for no reason whatsoever. Technically a hardware downgrade from the 7520, which had 32 gigs for some reason and 8 cores, but I use my desktop machine more than I use that laptop, so I am used to the "weak" hardware that is on this desktop. I do not need stronger hardware.
I like look of the T420 for what seems to be a bulkier form factor and heavier keyboard, but the hardware and battery life might actually be worse than my current desktop computer.

I think I am going to purchase the T480. What would I be in for for with my current setup?

yea I should've specified:
I'm stuck with modern web (which is by far the biggest problem for older models), stuff like google drive/docs, webcam meetings etc.
I also semi-regularly run a lot of simulations (mostly written in python because Im lazy).
I travel a lot, so I'm aiming for 13/14inch models.
I used to do graphics but my adobe subscription run out and decided to cancel it
bonus points for 2 SSD slots so I can dual boot windows
In terms of budget: I'm not sure if laptops in general can last more than 4 years so I don't want to spend too much, but if there's a good model Im perfectly fine with spending up to 2k dollars.
TLDR a machine that withstands normie life and allows me to do my computer hobbies

The keyboard is better without a doubt. I've never had a key on a ThinkPad keyboard just break from normal typing. Linux support is almost flawless (touchpad works worse than on Windows but I disable it anyway). Performance won't be much worse as both 7520 and T480 have 4-cores with SMT, not 8 cores afaik. What is definitely worse is the rigidity of the chassis.

A long time ago I had a T460s, the batteries sucked so I got "new" ones on ebay and put them in according to the lenovo instructions (disabled batteries in bios and so on). When I turned the laptop back on one of the batteries wouldn't charge (it would discharge fine) so I only had like 30% of the capacity it was supposed to be after that one ran out. So I figured, one of the batteries must be fake. I put the old batteries back in and the exact same problem appeared.
So what happened exactly?

If you want Windows 7 on the T480 you'll need to use some hacked up drivers. I think there's some Chinese driver for the integrated graphics that works from 7th gen to 10th gen intel. Might need to add USB3 or NVMe drivers to the installation ISO as well.
T430 or below would work with Win7 without needing to fuck around with drivers

Is this the good place to talk about U/SFF Desktop products (Lenovo ThinkCentre/HP EliteDesk/Dell OptiPlex)?
My use case is building a NAS. What I need primarily is tons of spinning rust on the order of ~ 4TiB. That's 1, maybe 2 3.5 HDDs worth. Shall I:
> Buy an SFF which has enough internal HDD bays for my use case and swallow the efficiency penalty
> Buy an USFF and use USB-SATA converters to attach spinnign rust

What I'm looking at is either a HP ProDesk 400G4 for €175 (8500T, 8 ram, 256 SSD) or a ThinkCentre M720Q fore €200 (8500T, 16 ram, 512 SSD).

Is this heatsink not supposed to be removed? What kind of screw is that?
>>
>>106850438
well the framwork is more made to have the same case and upgradable motherboards. and all replacements parts are sold by framework. The modular io is also cool

I will never switch to a framwork unless they add physical buttons to the trackpad and add a red nipple/ trackpoint

I just resigned to using an ac outlet and/or 65W powerbank to compensate for the dying batteries of my t480.

Companies used to come up with like level 7 bullshit. This isnt even level 2. It might be harder to engineer than a normal keyboard but it just shows where there priorities are (not productivity or efficiency)

Is it true the USB-C charging port for Thinkpads starting from T480 and newer have a short life span that will effectively brick the laptop? I bought a refurbished L490 recently but I saw on Reddit just now that failing USB-C ports seem to be highly widespread, I'm starting to regret my purchase, thinking I should've bought a Dell Latitude 5420 instead.

Mine doesn't have USB-C so I don't know but is that just the connector itself giving out? Isn't that common with pretty much all USB-C connectors? They just can't take that take that many insertions.
>>
>>106852170
There seem to be exactly two types of people: those who break every USB-C port they use and those who never break any.
>>
>>106852170
The port itself should be good for unlimited insertions. Cables on the other hand, those were designed to be the wear items so just replace your dock or charger type-C cable every few years and you're golden.

i want tpfcontrol to run the fans at full speed all the time, i have it set to manual "64" but when the cpu reaches 76c it switches to smart mode.

how do i make it so it stays on manual?

its a T14 gen 3 and TPFC v.63
>>
>>106853813
G2 still did, I think they removed it in G3.

If only they had the courage to get rid of the tapered edges and add 1-2 mm of thickness, they could bring back the SD slot and a fifth USB port and modular wifi. But somehow even the non-slim laptops all have to be as slim as possible.

Is this a good value for $318?
T480 i7 8th gen, Nvidia MX150 GPU, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM
It's a listing from some laptop store so the price is probably a bit higher than it should be, but at least they offer 7 days replacement warranty.
>>
>>106854822
I'd say yes
Not as low as what deal hunters will approve of
But its reasonable enough
Personally, I think its only worth it as long as there are no cracks (scratches are fine) + the battery still works and lasts around 2-3 hours and the screen does not have any discoloration/cracks.
Basically it practically better be mint

I have like 6 thinkpads, the last 2 i had to replace because the keyboards fucked up. and you can't replace just the keyboard like on older ones you have to replace the whole top part which costs as much as a whole used thinkpad.
I didn't even notice much of a performance boost between my T420, T480 L490 and T14 but that's probably due to going from windows 8 to 11 plus pajeet code bloat.

I'd probably be fine still using the T480 with windows 10 if it still worked.

Are the new thinkpads any good? Computer Science student looking for something for school, preferably with stylus support for maths and a GPU. Love my X220 but the resolution and trackpad are killing me
>>
>>106855972
>stylus and GPU
Don't think there are any with both, though you might not need a GPU with the integrated graphics of today's CPUs. The Yogas are usable until 2024 when they decided that having a slot for the pen is outdated and people should carry it (and a USB cable for charging it) separately instead.

Not that I know of. I got lucky with a few second-hand 4710MQs from a private seller a while ago but the older you go, the less of a market there is.
>>
really unsatisfied with my carbon x1 8th gen, compared to x280 this is frankly garbage, the hidpi screen sucks the battery dry real quick and it is generally a very hot device. Not that thinkpads were ever particularly cool historically but x280 was in a sweet spot where it didn't really do that
>>
>>106857340
came from an X61, and went straight to a T14 Gen 3 because they finally ditched 16:9 and went back to 16:10

Its a bit too big and heavy for my taste. I considered the X13, but I really wanted an ethernet port
The framework 12 looked promising, but it came out to be a huge disappointment

Still using the T14 as the X61 is just too old.
Every new thinkpad that comes out just removes the features that used to differentiate it from the rest.
Ethernet port, SD card slot and more USB A ports (at least 3) should be standard on the X13
Removable battery too.
Non soldered RAM too but everyone is way past that.

T480 has the oldest intel generation officially supported by windows 11, so the prices of it will not go down for this reason. Keep in mind that the CPUs aren't that much faster than something like a quadcore ivy bridge from the qm series, just a bit more power efficient. That laptop is definitely a nice package, but NOT fast by any means, it's basically like pimping a 13 year old laptop, just with a type c port and an option to put in an nvme drive (and be restricted by the bandwidth)
>>
>>106855972
don't look for dedicated GPUs in thinkpads, in the era of thunderbolt and usb4 being prevalent, you can use an external one in an enclosure at home, and you're going to be good with a modern AMD APU, especially with it having unified memory, meaning that it's actually somewhat decent for GPGPU tasks if you can get it up and running, which is a bit of a pain

On 8th gen CPUs you can increase the power limits in Throttlestop to the same as for a quad-core ivybridge and get more performance that way.

Thanks for the help IDing.
Bottom most machine is a t450s, from left to right on the top is t420, x220t, and x230. Some superficial damages to the x220 and x230 but the other two are in great condition.
Only have a charger for the t450, installed an SSD and putting arch on her now. Again, total price was 2.50 so I am quite giddy. Also got a pretty new Dell Latitude with good specs for 30 dollars.
So basically, look into university surplus auctions.
>>
>>106857721
Are you using linux on that?
I got an issue with my X61 where chromium has a lot of graphical glitches
>>
>>106838958
>would EC mod fix this?
I think so, it seems like a problem with the extra DRM added in the xx30 generation. The same thing happened to my T470 with its fake battery (empty icon, error on boot) and connecting the battery to a T510 for a few seconds made it work again.
>>
I have an HP ProBook 640 G1, I got the stupidest issue, it turns itself on every time I shut it down. I started plugging out the battery so it doesn't stay on for no reason while not in use. I had the thing since 2018 or something, it started doing this about 6 months ago when I switched it from Winblows to Linux. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but putting it out there.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm assuming the power button might have derped in the meantime, but I'd like some other opinions before I start tearing into the laptop.

how long will a 72wh external battery last roughly on a t480 just running like word and a lil bit of chrome.

That varies a lot with hardware.
Go check out some command to give you the power draw and run it with your programs open and then do the calculations based on that.

I'm actually using a T60 with XP Pro 32bit with Supermium, which is based on Chromium and have had no issues, works great. T/X 60/61 are all very similar machines.

latitudes used to be better, but more modern ones share too many parts with the consumer lines. soldered ram and wifi cards. BAD drivers. since switching BIOS vendors, dell firmware has also been a disaster.
