In this thread I will install Gentoo Linux for the first time.
Specs: Ryzen 3 4300U with 12GB RAM (ThinkPad L15g1)
I'm also watching Mr. Robot's final season

1. Currently I am reading this
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Full/Installation#Introduction
>>
2. Downloading this to Ventoy:
install-amd64-minimal-20251005T161859Z.iso
>>
3. Booting it now, didn't read the kernel options I'm in GRUB just going to select: Boot LiveCD (kernel: gentoo)
>>
>>106818891
I had an option to pick keymap but didn't pick one so it picked the default one and now i'm at shell prompt:
livecd ~ #

>>106818901
why didn't you use the live gui iso. its more comfy you can have the handbook open on the same machine.

the curl command in wiki worked

my vpn is slow and I have another device right here

I am noticing that some of these commands give a interface name but don't tell the command to figure out what they are on your device

I don't know much about fastman but from the screenshots i've seen it seems interesting, isn't the fastman distro Guix though

you can just unscrew the case on your laptop and swap it over

you need to chroot to the stage 3 you extracted to the root.

>>
>>106819776
the stage 3 tarball contains all the binaries you need to run portage and install the system. the iso is just to give you an environment to make it possible to partition your disks and get online.
>>
>>106819776
oh i missed the swap on part. that is kernel level so it will still be active inside the chroot. chroot just changes the location of /

ran this
tar xpvf stage3-*.tar.xz --xattrs-include='*.*' --numeric-owner -C /mnt/gentoo
still haven't chrooted, editing make.conf
>>
>>106819977
I did not fully read enough about make.conf but the only changes I made was adding -march=native to common_flags and writing a new line
MAKEOPTS="-j4 -l5"
since I have 4 threads 12gb ram that seems right from what little I read

you can always reboot and skip ahead in the manual to the chroot and finish your installation. you don't need to repartition if it doesn't boot your first try. the stuff you have compiled successfully thus far will still be safe and sound on the disk.

ohh lol I thought you meant it flashed by on boot. if it is still compiling then its because the distribution kernel builds all the modules for all the hardware. the kernel will only run them if it detects the hardware so its not detrimental to performance just compile time and disk space.

He’s trolling, you can use binary packages if you want. Just FYI the binhost installs precompiled binaries for a select few packages that the Gentoo maintainers have compiled binaries for. The -bin packages otoh such as those for librewolf or palemoon are binaries provided by the devs of those packages, not the gentoo maintainers.

the first time i've tried to install gentoo i had b**tloader problem too. seriously, beside firmware and malfunctioning kernel it's always
>fucked up partitions, filesystems (esp when doing lvm and encryption)
>fstab and mounts
>bootloader
1st isnt gentoo specific, i would do an arch vanilla installation in a vm in a setup i want. 2nd is your focus slipping, sleep it away and try again. on a 3rd issue i've thrown the towel and ditched grub for refind because the latter has easier configuration, simple installation (drop the executable somewhere in your ESP, create a boot entry in efibootmgr, change boot order in EFI), automatic image detection ootb and it's has always just worked for me.
an advice for dealing with your system in general, including installing it of course. don't hurry and relax. step away if you're stuck, come back refreshed. that's the approach which i've found both most effective at problem solving and pretty damn comfy too.

/efi/EFI/grubx64.efi is a file
/boot/grub exists and /boot has amd-uc.img, initramfs.img ,vmlinuz dist, System.map dist and config gentoo dist, grub is a folder

>>106823893
there's no error when I rebooted it, it takes me to BIOS boot menu and I only had two options GRUB and my SSD, both of them just flash black and the boot menu reappears
>>
this is what i did the first time:
grub-install --efi-directory=/efi
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
Installation finished. No error reported.

this time I did this:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/efi --bootloader-id=gentoo

for both I then ran this again:
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
both times linux and initrd found

and now to see if I fixed it, I believe what I forgot the first time was the mount commands:

exit
umount -R /mnt/gentoo
rebooting manually because I unplugged usb before pressing reboot

ok I'm back at boot menu going to test both again if it still doesn't work I'm going to check BIOS settings. Once again both just flash black and bring me back to boot menu.

didn't understand what that did ngl I just wanted to install ungoogled chromium bin
>>
>>106827002
you added a third party (not maintained by gentoo) repository and synced it, then you installed your software.
>>
>>106827002
>didn't understand what that did ngl
it removed any chances of you losing your virginity
>>
>>106818792
>using chink malware
you already failed
>>
>>106827154
that was already long gone
>>
>>106825967
Congratulations!
>>
>>106828720
thanks I am back from uni now, sold my macbook

audio isn't working
chromium needs to be ran as root with a extra flag and doesnt work for normal users
>>
>>106829363
>chromium needs to be ran as root
You never want to run a browser as root. Why are you doing this?
>>
>>106829516
so I can open a web browser, I no longer have another device im posting from proxy because I need to set up tailscale to connect to my VPN
also I don't plan on using it like this forever if that wasn't clear just until I finish the rest of my installation (audio, why doesn't ungoogled-chromium open for normal users, which is correct chromium-browser or chromium-browser-bin, etc...)
>>
>>106827002
>didn't understand what that did ngl I just wanted to install ungoogled chromium bin
Whenever in doubt, type "Yes, do as I say!"
>>
>>106829532
Wouldn't just using an Appimage of Ungoogled Chromium be literally better than a jury rigged workaround that makes you run the program as fucking root?
>>
>>106829532
Still don't do it.
>why doesn't ungoogled-chromium open for normal users
What error does it show you?
>>
>>106829566
lol are you the same guy from /pts/ I fell for your bait once when you post that linus tech tips webm

>>106829574
it's just temporary while I figure out why it won't normally, I need a web browser and this is the only way to start my downloaded web browser for now, eventually I will figure out how to make it so that chromium-bin or chromium-browser-bin boots chromium normally

>>106829593

I have installed sudo and uncommented:
%wheel ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL
using the visudo command which opens nano
>>
I have installed mouespad text editor and the greybird theme might try more themes later but for now I need to focus on getting audio to work, pulseaudio is installed and running, fn+f keys seem to work and it seems to be a different value when I unplug my IEMs however no sound is playing when plugged or unplugged

I would start here

It doesn't have access to your .config which is weird.
>>
>>106829622
Check the owner of the /home directory
ls -l /home
>>
>>106825967
Gratz! I hope your system serves you long and well
>>
>>106829832
>>106829885
thanks a few hours ago before I went to sell my mac I ran some command which I think was supposed to make me the owner will check again

>>106829925
I hope so I will transfer it among devices my eternal install till the day I die

installed pavucontrol, idk why audio doesn't work this didn't fix it it's just a volume gui
>>
>>106830050
I’m not super familiar with audio issues (despite the meme) but I think audio is usually controlled through Pipewire, JACK, or ALSA. I haven’t had to debug it myself, sorry :(
>>
>>106830088
don't worry i got my pizza and tendies I'm sure I'll figure it out and go to sleep early today current time 18:23
>>
>>106829832
>>106829885

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home//.config/chromium
rm -f /home/mo/.config/chromium/SingletonLock

working, I will no switch browser and focus on my audio
>>
>>106830579
audio just werks maybe it was because I emerged alsa or maybe it was a running chromium as root issue
>>
installing gentoo is as easy as installing arch just slightly more time consuming
>>
>>106830648
I disagree arch/artix was much easier, I think the layout or css of the gentoo handbook could greatly be improved specifically text size especially differences between different heading levels, and to make more clear the important things and less important things

installing keepassxc, vscodium, and tailscale now, once this is done I am basically done now that ungoogled-chromium works and has ublock origin and umatrix

xfce requires ricing the greybird dark theme is nice but I mean specifically the different docks I prefer only having one, so for now I'm going back to my pony roots and trying niri but I may come back to xfce once I have more time to rice
>>
>>106830891
ctrl clicking links from terminal doesn't work, compiling is slow and I don't recall a single change I have made with USE flags so far

fact check:
xfce-base/xfce4-meta -media -cdr
to have less bloat but that is a minor change I can live without

Was there any point of me installing gentoo I think it would be better if my software install faster oh well at least I am nearly done
>>
>>106831065
someone explain what the point of all this compiling is if I'm not using USE flags
wouldn't Guix or Artix be better for my
>use case
for now goodnight thread
>>
>>106831257
Saner defaults than, like, Arch. Which enables, like, almost every viable flag, bloating up your programs, and increasing your attack surface as a result.
>>
Bump for the /g/entooman
>>
bump
>>
In this thread I will install windows 11
>>
ok it's installed
>>
>>106835083
>>106835090
It’s not that fast don’t lie anon
>>
>>106835108
its pretty quick on nvme from a USB C flash drive
>>
>>106819120
at least use -g so it grabs binaries by default if you happen to be using an available use flag set. you can replace them later on
>>
This threads making me interested in messing around with gentoo, might start a little project on the weekend on an old precision tower i got lying around
