https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmEa_CPTe_cI really do wonder what retards make these decisions
They are still saying "no more transcoding" though
>>106821948An anti-tranny policy? Holy based!
>>106821933>I really do wonder what retards make these decisionsSomeone who thought there might not be any blowback because someone told them home use consumers make up a small percentage of the userbase. The branded HDDs approach would have really worked on small office and other businesses where purchasing is usually centered on the least painful route to procure rather than price. The least places you can get something the better. It's why Uline, Grainger, and McMaster carr are so utilized because they sell damn near everything a particular business might need.Synology wanted to be that but for storage.
People are still buying synology on purpose? I thought everyone knew we were boycotting them.
>>106821933>I really do wonder what retards make these decisionsa retard from business school, as always.these subhumans aren't fit for leadership/decision-making positions, they're good for counting beans that's it, they're dogshit at strategy and at understanding wtf engineers are doing and why they do something one way and not another (less expensive) one.see boeing for textbook example of why you should never place a non-engineer at the head of a company that exist purely because of engineering prowesses (yeah not reall the same as synology but you get the idea, bean counters should count beans, their more-expensive-than-average degree does not give legitimacy)
>>106821933Can someone give me a quick rundown?I have a Synology NAS, but I use WD GOLD drives.
>>106822199Synology's 2025 NAS models all said they only work with Synology branded NAS drives, no WD, Seagate Hitachi or any other drives would work.Nobody bought themSynology reverses policy will let those NAS models use other drives
>>106822163Why would one boycott Synology? They are a Taiwanese company
>>106822199>Can someone give me a quick rundown?new nas had arbitrary software restriction if you used a third-party hdd and not synology ones.I'm personally responsible for 4 aborted sales for them, yeah it's not much but I do hope others were doing their part in avoiding these greedy fuckerstrust is lost for a long time for me, greediness is innate, unless people in charge leave the company, they will always try to scam users one way or another.>I use WD GOLD drives.be careful, western digital is very scummy too nowadays>>106822226>Why would one boycott Synology?why would they put arbitrary limitations on what we can do with OUR hardware? limitations that are there because of the laws of physics are fine but in this case it's pure greed so fuck them.>inb4 hurr companies exist to make moneyno fucking shit, nas are already way too overpriced for what they are hardware-wise, if they now want to retain total control over it after a sale is done it's one step too far, back the fuck off and let people do whatever the fuck they want with THEIR hardware.they already control the software and synology/qnap/asustor are notorious for producing easy-to-hack shitware, without linux stability under the hood they would go bankrupt with the very little added-value they provide to consumers.I use recommend them just because it's hard to source electronic in this form-factor with these features as they're usally exclusive for oem/manufacturers (some atom/celeron with certain IO just don't exist in the wild even on aliexpress so we don't have much choice)
>>106822337Okay I thought that the boycott could have been political or something like that.I'm using an old Synology model and while checking for compatible drives of larger capacity I saw that branded HDD bullshit, but there was no indication that I cannot use other brands so I dismissed that.Locking new models exclusively into Synology HDDs is indeed a shitty move. Glad they reconsidered.
>>106822337I wasn't aware of this and am currently on the market for a NASCan't say I would've gone for them eventually, but you might've cost them another sale
>>106822337>be careful, western digital is very scummy too nowadays Sure, but those GOLD 10TB have been running problem free for about 6 years
>>106821933explain why I'm supposed to take this toothless brit seriously.
the best NAS are QNAP anyway because you can erase their shitware and install whatever linux distro you want.
>>106822226Honestly being Taiwanese is a good reason to boycott. The last 10-15 years they have just become west-lite in how they conduct business. When it came to PCs and other electronics, you used to get things with some thought put into them that spanned all the way from the low-end to the high-end and they really tried to keep prices down, usually through sheer volume.Nowadays pretty much all of them are just like western corporations where every single product goes through price discovery and margins are the only thing that matters. There is only a few companies that I actually respect for what they do. I like Meanwell, FSP, thermalright and a few others. But Synology, QNAP, Asus or just any mainstream brand that is Taiwanese are all just automatic avoids.Truth be told the only reason these companies are afloat is due to the geopolitics with sanctions against the mainland with Taiwan otherwise having unlimited access to whatever parts are chips it wants.Kinda warms my heart to see people going from Synology to a company like UGreen. Synology's products are otherwise so basic there is zero reason why they need to be headed by a Taiwanese company.
>>106823464Asus (Asustor) x86 NAS are okay though, no artificial scummy restrictions, generic consumer drivers, user-configurable BIOS can boot any OS.Even native OS has no proprietary abstraction layers - just bare mdadm, docker, etc.
>>106823926Asus is on my shit list because they basically do everything to assert they actively hate you after the purchase is made. This is common with Taiwan brands, and has been for a long time to be fair but it's hard to look away for a $1000+ integrated device.I'm not even strictly against buying integrated devices but when you know the hardware doesn't really add up and you know the premium is based on how many HDD/M.2 slots it has (which aren't expensive to add because it's just ran off the SoC anyway), it just becomes hard to swallow to buy from someone like Asus.
>>106823462>BUT DOES IT RUN LINUX?????you are a joke

>>106824758Truenas sucks compared to symbology. If youโre spending 5k on an overpriced consumer toy OS, might as well get a real NAS from NetApp.
>>106822337>be careful, western digital is very scummy too nowadaysThey tried being scummy twice, like, 5 years ago, got called out immediately on both counts, and since then they mention both explicitly on their datasheets. They haven't done anything scummy since. But there's some russian retard on /g/ who keeps spamming threads about WD secretly selling gimped drives, because he cannot fathom that 15$ 2.5" drives simply will not have enterprise grade reliability.
>>106823462the best nas is one you build yourself
>>106823926I had an Asustor box which was pretty cool for having 10GbE RJ45 about four years ago. Unfortunately the board failed, took 2 months to RMA, and their idiotic OS wanted to wipe all drives clean despite an existing system already being on them.So fuck Asustor.>>106824847TrueNAS works for what it needs to do, and it's just a linux install beyond that (or FreeBSD if you use the old version). It's one big problem is not supporting proper sleep states so it guzzles power because the entire user base has the mentality of running BIG servers 24/7, and if anyone wants to try an ASM1166 card instead of a 20W LSI HBA, well, then they should get fucked.
