Day in the life of a tech worker:

>Wake up at 10am
>do daily standup, my long hair is a mess and im wearing just a robe, dont care
>back to bed for a nap
>wake up
>masturbate to minors being sluts on social media
>complain about foids on r9k
>write code for 1 or 2 hours
>have lunch
>go get groceries
>check the time, wagies arent even out of the cagie yet, jfl
>get home and masturbate more

lately i've been wondering what's really the difference between working from home and being rich. because the main thing that people envy from the rich is not doing a 9 to 5.

The "you need to have a personal repo with code samples" is dumb shit. If I built something amazing I'm not giving it away for free to the world and the rest of the time I'm working on proprietary codebases for an employer so wtf lol.

>not one was even wearing a suit
You'll be lucky if I'm even wearing pants.
>>
>>106829820
Eh, that's a retarded mentality anon.
You can have a simple "format1 to fomat2 converter" published as open source. It's just so the interviewer knows you can actually write code without needing to be whipped.
I have three super simple libraries on github and it changed how interviewers see me, for sure.
>>
>>106829852
This is a waste of time, no one is going to bother checking your repo when you can simply copy and paste code from anywhere.
>>
>>106829852

But you're still going to make them do the LC to do that. The github thing is just a stupid ritual that never makes a difference. Anyone can copy paste and push code to a repo.
>>
>>106829804
>tie is fucked up

>>
>>106829498
Look, if you are happy with that, why not? You know what you got, but not what you get.
You wouldn't be the first guy to jump into shit expecting the grass to be greener on the other side. With that being said, the danger is of course staying in a workplace that is unfullfilling or otherwise something you aren't fully pleased with due to it not being horrible either when you could get something that is better for you, economically and mentally.

It's not that they think having a git repo is something special, it's more like someone not having a git repo is a red flag. An ick, if you will.
>>
>>106829911

Once again, you're not accepting repo projects as proof. They're still going to put you through the multi panel coding tests.
>>
>>106829865
Well, you're gonna waste your time with something whether you like it or not.
You can try to minmax interviews, learn keywords, pay a shady website to rehearse interviews, etc.
You can try to minmax your resume, use AI tools to pick the correct keywords, pay for common ATSs to form a feedback loop as to how interviewers see you, etc.
OR you can just do what you like to do, takes like an afternoon, and works better than pretty much any other option.
Since I published my libraries I realized I often skip the first HR filter calls, they just send me directly to meet my future boss on semi-technical interviews.
>Anyone can copy paste and push code to a repo.
Yes, it's not a perfect system. But it's still a great sign that you are not retarded and are "passionate about software".
Plus, they can ask you about your libraries and you have to talk about them. Pretty sure the jeetpasters can be easily filtered by a simple "So, why did you publish this?".
>>

>Manager doesn't care about efficiency as long as work gets done
>Start digging into processes
>All data comes from SQL servers but nobody in the dept knows SQL
>The most programming anyone does is fucking Excel VBA
>We use some india-certified front end built by IBM in like 1204 AD to run queries
>Most data pulls are equivalent to SELECT * FROM... and printed into an .xlsx
>Every reporting process I'm taking over is a mash up of copy paste from the raw massive data, multiple pivots, copy paste from pivots, pivot the results, copy paste from those pivots
No wonder the processes take hours to complete, it's the most inefficient dog shit ever
>Realize that the department has essentially been run entirely by fresh college grads and the managers don't give a fuck because they're not technically inclined, work gets done right?
I just took one of the "this takes a few days to complete" projects and spent maybe an hour or two re-doing the whole thing in SQL, and now it will run in 15 seconds every month instead of 10 hours of pivoting and copy pasting and double checking across 300K rows in an xlsx file.

I get folks here are not technical but Jesus titty fucking christ, is this how typical finance departments are running?
>>
Holy shit, I'm retarded. I was thinking LC was a waste and didn't bother with any of it, but I just realized I can just use my $LLM credits to solve a bunch of questions during the weekend.
>>
>>106829959

You know what worked best for me? I spent about ~2 months desperately trying to check off all the boxes like you said. Be the happiest and most eager guy. And then after about like 6 gay multi round interviews I realized it was all fucked. The final 2 I didn't give a fuck about and was basically a pissant having gone cynical about it and they both gave me offers. So what I learned is: make the interviewer feel small and irrelevant instead and their lizard brain will want to prove itself and appeal to you instead. TADA
>>
>>106829986
>I spent about ~2 months desperately trying to check off all the boxes like you said
It's not about "checking off all the boxes", that's why you were filtered.
It's about "I don't have much to do so I'll write code because I like doing that". Sorry you're not passionate about what you work with.
>>
>>106829986
>make the interviewer feel small and irrelevant instead and their lizard brain will want to prove itself and appeal to you instead.
That's more or less my experience. It's fucked up that it all rests on how confident you seem. The less you care the better it goes.
>>
>>106830018

Nah, you're all disingenuous cunts. You like raking desperate people over the coals and looking for reasons to demean and write them off. The moment you're challenged and demeaned instead and made to look like a fool, or someone that the candidate wants nothing to do with, your own gay brain is going to want to suck them in. It's just like fucking women. Set the care meter to 20% not 80%, it's fishing.

The correct course of action is to pretend to work for the day and run your script close to EOD.

My nigger in fried chicken, I am not a hiring manager. I'm just someone who went through the troubles of finding jobs many times and I realized being passionate helps.

this is like my friend telling me to absolutely not write understandable code because it just makes you replaceable
>>
>>106830066

Well, this is twice now that it hasn't for me. And I do understand general human psychology so it tracks. It's the same reason you don't put "openToWork" on your LinkedIn. It reeks of desperation and eagerness to please which is naturally repulsive to the choosers out there. Two have to care somewhat to make a potential match, but the one that cares less has all of the leverage. If prospective employers can sense that you're "better than them" they go all in. This last time it was a legitimate mistake, I had accepted another offer and was checking out and these dudes got so desperate they offered 50% higher than that. Ok

Anyway no, I'm not going to prune and preen a github repo in my off hours after 8-10 hours a day of soul crushing programming work and you can sit on a fist if that's your arbitrary requirement because I know your organization is mostly composed of illiterate unwashed 3rd worlders doing the same job for peanuts

The funny thing is that my boss doesn't seem to care that much, she is neither impressed nor upset partially because she's trapped in endless meeting hell and partially because she doesn't know enough SQL to vet my work - my team members don't care either because they know I'm the only one technically inclined enough to do this so they get to keep trucking along with.. whatever it is they're doing. I literally was threatened with a military charge for doing this at my other job. and even then still just re-wrote the script after visibly deleting it, and would run it at the start of my watch and 15 minutes before ending it, then 5 to clean up its mess because I can't code for shit but it at least did something, another 5 doing actual manual process stuff (literal printing/stapling/by-hand highlighting/putting in sticky tabs/etc) and the last 5 cooking up something to look busier than I was and yet in complete control of the situation

This is profoundly sad. It's good you can focus at work now, but sad it's needed for you to make a living, and a working not for yourself, but a company that is not yours.
>>
>>106830209
Fuck you nigger, Im a NOC tech doing actual work and I get 48k
>>
>>106830275

I think it's actually pretty natural. Think about human psychology. We aren't built for the virtual. We're meant to feel motivate by real things, real work, demanded of us by a collective we belong to and that needs us. Family groups basically. What happens when a company can't foster that culture? If you feel faceless, disposable, unappreciated, and the work you do trivial, virtual, intangible, why would you ever feel motivated to do it? It would actually be weirder if you can. Those that can muster the interest and drive are the exception.
>>

yes, numbers inside a computer being the purpose of 8 hour work days is fucked up.

Taking drugs for computer work, or manual labor is fucked up too

A man can enjoy both of these if he enjoys it. Many men love programming and being inside the virtual.

Money is a motivator, but when you do drugs to get paid, it's profoundly sad.
>>
>>106830380

Well, who isn't drinking coffee or energy drinks? In all likelihood humans were only built to have ~4 hours of productivity max per day, in 2 hour windows in the morning and the evening, with a lot of rest in between.
>>
>finally leaving the pip factory
on to my next hellhole!
>>
it dont matter. none of this matters.
>>
>>106830404
many people don't drink those
caffeine is also a lot different than Adderall

I think we're capable of a lot more than 4 hours if we benefit from it and there is sufficient purpose
>>
>>106830448

It's not all that different. I would actually argue low-dose addy xr is the superior stimulant. It just gives you higher baseline focus and drive, without all of the anxiety and jitter caffeine gives. And I'd say at minimum 80% of corporate America is on caffeine.

We are "capable" of more than 4, obviously, but it isn't what we're naturally optimized for, if that makes any sense. Or else we wouldn't touch stimulants at all.

Little kids basically exhibit human nature in its purest form. They wake up, go crazy for 2 hours in the morning, tank and nap during the mid-day, and then go crazy for another 2 in the evening before bed. We're basically crepuscular, like cats. We evolved in hot climes that made mid day productivity useless and even dangerous.

I agree with the others, don't be too eager if you can not expect a financial return, but damn, LLMs are insanely good at all flavors of SQL. in fact, you could probably prompt all your migrations in a day or two and finish without lifting a finger

>>
>>106830723

Generally speaking, the more low level and strict you get with a programming language, the better the AI handles the context and can generate code for it. SQL has no ambiguity or flexibility at all and a strict syntax with simple building blocks. If you give the AI accurate parameters it will usually handle it.

Front end stuff is a nightmare with AI. There are so many languages/frameworks involved with so much change over the years and so many ways to skin a cat that it just bugs out and generates shit.

another thing to consider is that most devs are rather mediocre at SQL and LLMs know tricks they can not even dream of.

There was this very convoluted multi hundred loc SQL right in the heart of the business domain. The one that actually generates $$$ for the business. The one that was carefully optimized by several people throughout the years and takes multiple staff engineers approval to submit a PR for. Well, it turns out you can just throw it at some LLM and it produces a more refined query and has like 2x the performance. Never seen so many high ranking db admins sweating and coping at the same time
>>
>>106830875
to be fair SQL is pretty shit-simple and 90% of the problems with databases are HR rat skill issues coming up with utterly retarded schema because they dont know how telephone numbers work or that people can have more than one name
