Welcome to the 4Chan /g usenet group Thread!

>What is /usenet/?

Open standard protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on
(http, irc, rss, ftp, etc). TNot owned by corpos, not under
govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed
by all.

Some, like FTP are outdated and insecure. Others, like rss, irc, http,
usenet are still glorious and wonderful open standards .
Join us and discuss such topics on one such protocol:
NNTP, aka usenet.

>WTF IS USENET
Literally it means the Users Network. It’s an open
protocol for posting and reading messages, organized by newsgroups. It's entirely decentralized, no single server, mpossible to take down.

Today it is split between, binaries and text. The
binaries part is what it’s known for today: piracy. The text part is forgotten and abandoned, until now.

>WHY POST ON USENET
Its open protocol, you can use any client you want or
build you own. No costs, no subscriptions, no money. You can sign up through your ISP, or through eternal-september.org. Then you just need to install a client.

>THIS IS OLDER THAN MY DAD. WHY TF WOULD I DO THIS?

Because its is comfy.
Because it’s decentralized. Because instead of feeding some corpo ai
bullshit like discord or whatever, you can have a conversation with like
minded anons in an uncensored, decentralized, and fun hackerman way.

>DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING?
No, you can use the aforementioned eternal-september.org with any client of your choice, or use the service of newsgrouper.org to access freely online (register to post)

>OK I’M IN - WHERE DO I POST!
Join us at alt.cyberpunk.tech

WHAT CLIENT SHOULD I USE?
>Pan (gnome newsreader - Multiplat)
>Seamonkey
>Gnus for GNU Emacs
>Mozilla Thunderbird

>want to take a peek?

Online Based service @ newsgrouper.org is free and allows to post when registered. Also it can be used in any browser, even on android!
>>
>>106830354
Can I not access usegroups without having to use a service like eternal-september.org? It seems like most of the other services are paid. How is this a good thing?
>>
>>106830411
As stated you can access web based for free, read and post too!

Check newsgrouper.org to just browse, or register to browse and post in your browser.

(obviously using Pan is much better!)

>>

>>

cool that alt.bbs.ads is still active
>>
>>106830354
seems super cozy. sent a registration request for newsgrouper. exchanging messages is so simple, usenet makes you realize how bloated the modern messaging paradigm is and how all that bloat exists for the benefit of others and not the actual users.
>>
>>106831115
didin't expect that!
>>
>>106830354
This is so unfathomably comfy, you wouldn't believe it. And it's fucking digital holy ground as far as i'm concerned.
>>
I set up an account on eternal september but it's a normie account with my actual name and email address.
What are the most active newsgroups?
>>
>>106831275
alt.cyberpunk.tech

The rest are irrelevant.
>>
>>106831275
check the comp. section
>>
>>106831275
It's fine, get on the group and say hello, post news, stories, cool stuff ... Anything.

Even if binaries are not allowed, linking is.
>>
im scared to click any of these links, let alone connect to random ip grabbing servers
>>
>>106832102
did you not see the pictures already posted
>>
Its strange, I can read the group, but I can't seem to reply. I mean I hit send, Betterbird says its sending, but it seems to never post.
>>
>>106832506
try PAN That works great. Or post some more info like your conf so we can help you debug
>>
>>106830354
why is ur post formatted retardedly? random newlines everywhere
>>
>>106832506
pan is garbage linux shit.

Use something like thunderbird or netsape.

Dont let retards keep you from particiating.

They want you to not understand so their secret club of retards can go on.
>>
>>106833020
stop using retarded systems and everything is ok.

there are only 3 types of newlines..

CR/LF (dos)
CR (unix)
LF (macos roman)

if you are gonna pretent to be a UNIX user, at least know this.

Oh, I found out why I can't post. I use a newshosting account, but posting is Inactive on it. I'll need to see about getting it activated.
>>
>>106833165
chivanet.org has both reading and posting, and it's basically idiot-proof as long as posting it doesn't summon another tard screeching about trannies like in the last thread
>>
>>106833180
keep your tranny shit to yourself. the whole point of this is freedom, something you cant comprehend. FUCK OFF.
>>
>>106830354
Usecase for usenet?
>>
I don't quite understand. Do I need to create an account? Who am I giving my personal information to?
>>
>>106833180
Thanks that got me posting.
>>106833383
You aren't giving personal info to anybody. Just an email account will do, and for that you can use any email service you want.
Just don't use your real name or any real emails and nobody knows shit about you. The server might have your IP address, so if you're really worried use a VPN.
Anyways, yes, you need to create an account with a newshost so that you can get feeds as well as post to them.
>>
Even more dead forums/altchans no one is ever going to visit
>>
Isn't it owned by Google groups now don't you have to use Google groups and isn't everything just total spam, at least that's all I see when I go searching Google groups to browse old Usenet posts
>>
Oh man you faggots are going to make me start using the lifetime subscription that I bought on black Friday about 15 years ago.
>>
>>106833429
What is a newshost? What makes one different from another?
>>
>>106833112
You got unix and (old) mac mixed up.
unix uses lf for EOL and (old) mac uses CR for EOL.
>>
I’m 44 fucking years old. If you truly want to take me back to the good old days then we will do 4chan usenet/irc/doom wad deathmatch and it will be like 1994-1998 all over again
>>
Does anyone actually use it or its as dead like most altchans/forums?
Howd the userbase, do i need to be retired to use this or is infiltratrd with retarded zoomers and political propaganda like neocities?
How censorship resistant is it, what happens when governments go after the hosts for not enforcing digital ID?
>>106830847 Now im pissed again all my XP machines died, is there a simple GUI client like that on modern Linux?
Anything else?
>>
>>106833523
Stay away anon. We don’t want retarded assholes like you.
>>
>>106833504
old guys. :) Mostly. Yer not alone.
>>
>>106833429
it also gave you access to AIM and a new email, if you're interested in either
>>106833523
that's 2000, not XP
>>
>>106830882
