If it's "just a printer", then I agree with the anon who mentioned ipp / driverless. Pretty much any model is going to work.
If it's a "multi function printer", the kind with an included scanner, etc, you still need to check in advance if the drivers are available for the other parts.

But for the scanner, SANE is the name of the project to look into, there are several useful lists on their site. Manufacturers/models that are supported, but also there is a list of of models that are specifically not supported. Usually the reason is the driver contains non-free software, so you have to get it from the manufacturer's website.
For the model I have, there were already AUR packages with this stuff.
Can't quite remember why I have brlaser installed. Maybe it exposed some extra options, 1200dpi mode or something?
