Death to LEDs in street lighting
>>
can you even buy a small sodium lamp for home use? it'd be cool.
>>
LED street lights save taxpayers money and increases energy efficiency. LED street lights saved New York City taxpayers $14 million in maintenance and energy costs between 2015 and 2017. In Los Angeles, the switch to LED reduced energy consumption by 80%.

https://fsg.com/how-street-lighting-improves-climate/

>>
>>106861630
i would pay $20 each year to have proper lights
>>
HOLY soulless
>>
Sodium vapor lights output a color temperature between 1800K and 2200K. LED can also output that color temperature while saving energy and money.

>>106861598
which one is better for the ambient bug life
>>
Led is comfy as fuck, anyone who been to japan knows it, yellow lights work only in European cities with castles and shit, there zero reason they should be used in a modern city.
>>
>>106861630
New York lost over $100 million dollars buying lighting equipment, letting it rot in a warehouse for 7 years, and then auctioning it off for $383K.
https://www.longislandguide.com/2025/07/10/failed-cuomo-era-bridge-lighting-project-nets-loss-of-over-100-million-for-nys-ratepayers-taxpayers/

I love LEDs.

>use less power
>easier to see
>makes schizos kill themselves because think certain wavelengths of visible light is going to kill them
>>
>>106861598
it's not led's fault. amber leds exist and in fact have existed longer than blue/white leds have
>>
>>106861711
they could lose the same amount buying sodium lamps and leaving them in a warehouse for 7 years too

what's that got to do with power consumption?
>>
>>106861714
Those almost always still emit blue light, and virtually no one is willing to shell out a fortune for single wavelength LEDs.

>>
>>106861722
i'm not talking about "warm white" leds, rather actual amber leds. they aren't some special expensive thing. it's white that was the tricky part. white leds don't really exist, those are blue leds with a phosphor coating that reduces some of the blue into other colours. green, red, and amber are all natively those colours only
>>
>>106861773
>More precisely speaking, there are two closely located narrow spectral lines at 589.0 nm and 589.6 nm

they're like the most monochrome light we can possibly make, which is why they are so bad, you can't see shit, it's literally dangerous if something is the wrong colour it can appear completely black

Whats the point of all these energy savings if the electric rate just goes up to cover the fixed costs of generating electricity?
>>
I used to work for a smaller municipal electric utility. The city owned a shit load of natural gas reserves and some retard thought it would be a good idea to use fucking gas lamps for streetlights downtown.

They were absolute dogshit and crime rates and car accidents went way up because it was so hard to see. I worked on project to retrofit them with LEDs only a few years later.
>>
>>106861849
>whats the point of X if you consider my made up scenario????
>>
>>106861807
what i mean is that there's so such thing as an led chip itself that emits a wide spectrum. they're either and only blue, red, green, and amber. any other colour is a either a mixture of these using multiple chips or with phosphors

>>
>>106861883

>>
>>106861899
there'll be a theoretical limit regarding how many watts is required to generate 800 lumen of light given a particular spectra. like even if you made a 100% efficient led, it wouldn't be able to do 800 lumen with only 1 watt of electricity. high quality leds are already fairly close to the limit. i think they currently go up to 200 lumen per watt (cheap shit leds do more like 100 lumen per watt), but 800 lumen per watt? i doubt that's even possible. i'm not sure what the theoretical limit is exactly, since that depends on the spectra involved. i'm sure there's someone out there that has worked out a conversion between lumen and watt for common spectra like "sunlight"
>>
>>106861598
It has nothing to do with LEDs. They just didn't want it to be orange at night.

Of course yellow/piss/orange lights aren't as great as the sun's light spectrum, but replacing it with those cheapskate LED lights you wouldn't even put in your christmas tree is retarded. For that matter why the hell would you make your LED lights white?
I too cannot see shit. They're bright as fuck in one focal point, but their range cannot illuminate jackshit. >>106861713 look how dark it is in certain sections and how those trees in the background are completely invisible against the green on green background.
Notice how bright the LEDs are in terms of seeing the LEDs themselves from a close distance yet how you can't see jackshit in certain areas cause the light doesn't disperse correctly.
They're more as guiding lights for half blind people who just want to follow the light rather than actually see what's around them.

>it's literally dangerous if something is the wrong colour it can appear completely black
Whether it's dangerous depends on the importance of being able to distinguish the colour of the object. In case of street lighting, it's almost always more important to be able to distinguish the object from the background, which monochromatic amber is actually very good at facilitating, since it increases the perceptive contrast. It's also far less dangerous than full-spectrum lighting in fog/mist conditions, as the narrow spectrum minimises light scattering effects caused by airborne water droplets.

LED goes into utility cabinets, garage, and perhaps the kitchen. Where visual clarity matters, and where you don't generally spend a lot of time. I accept LED wins in many cases, even most. But I'm replacing everything else with halogen, to get closer to what nature wanted. I'm actually gonna stockpile because they're gonna go after them next.

Honestly the hamfisting they've pulled with the LED should be investigated.

Buy smart LED's.
Not only can you dim them, you can also pick whatever color temperature you want for example 2700K at night and 5000K at daytime to match the sunlight coming from the windows.

Modern lighting technolo/g/y is amazing.
>>
>>106862631
>The color temperature of an arc light varies depending on the type of arc, but high-intensity discharge arc lights often fall in the range of 6000 K to 6500 K, closely mimicking daylight. Some sources specify carbon arc lights as being around 5400 K, while others place them closer to 6000 K.

if you could please consult the chart. sox bulbs have a very narrow spectral emission. there's nothing natural about sodium light. a high CRI 2000-2200K LED is way better.
sodium light is so narrow in spectrum that it can be used as a tech replacing the green screen, since you can filter out that very specific wavelength. very interesting video on this subject: https://youtu.be/UQuIVsNzqDk

>>106861630

>less energy usage and light pollution is... LE BAD!
My only problem with these was that they were too blue, but in my city they now use less blue LEDs so it's fine. I just wish they shielded them even more so less light escapes into the sky
>>

>implying this wouldn't have happened if we all used sodium
A single aislop datacenter uses many times more power than all lights in a city combined.

>>
>>106863695
>shielded them even more so less light escapes into the sky
I'm sure they shine 100% of their light downwards.
Shining up would be a waste and that's easily fixed by adding a reflector.

It's the light reflecting off the ground that causes light pollution and you can only fix that by putting roofs over the roads.
