>Linux people seem to be holding a very warped view of what minimalism means>They think of it only in terms of aesthetics and puritanism, and LARP as digtal ascetics living for "simplicity" all the while burying themselves in several layers of self-imposed complexity and worthless dogma>There is only one correct metric that should be counted when dealing with software, and that is the **user's cognitive load**how do you respond without sounding mad?
>>106867036>Distro hopper>Made up stuff like "Canonical nerd culture">Too stupid to understand why minimalist is a thingI'll start with the positives, there are just a handful of "holier than you" beings on everything that exist, just ignore those and you will live happily.Answering his observations, I'd say it is more a reactive movement where you get overloaded with garbage options that rarely add any value to you, the end user. It is not the computing power, or the aesthetics that driver minimalism, it is the voluntary choice of having less options available to you, following the "less is more mantra": less clutter, less dependencies, less useless menu options, less to do as I don't do much beyond X or Y.>T. Using debian + lxde since 2015
>>106867036>powered by BearShould have used Wordpress to lower the cognitive load on his smooth brain.
>>106867036Linux/Unix "minimalism" is a lie. If those people wanted minimalism, they would be running DOS, which is actually minimalist and uses less than 640 KB of memory, but they don't really want minimalism. They want their 8 GB memory usage and web browsers and everything, they just want it to look like it doesn't have any features.
>>106867036Strawman argument. Not every linux install needs to be a they/them tinker tranny build. Who cares what this literal who has to say?
>>106867036>hundreds of painstakingly typed out customizationsYou can hit yourself in the head with a hammer until your cognitive load is 0.
I feel like this dude doesn't practice what he preaches.Minimal static blog generators and solarized themes are purely the realm of the linux minimalist ricer, this dude is a poser, I bet he's not even transgender.
>>106867036How much RAM are you using? How much hard drive space are you using? The word minimalism exists outside of computers. It's pretty straightforward and doesn't need interpreting.
>>106867195>Minimal static blog generators and solarized themes>Muh ascetics>ignores the entire content of the argumentPeople like you aren't fit to breathe oxygen meant for real men.

>>106867263understanding the content of an argument requires significant self-imposed cognitive load
>>106867036He's intentionally missing the point, and making up his own definition of minimalism. I won't deny that most linux users take on additional cognitive load for their bespoke set ups, but that's not what minimalism means to most people. It means no ads or pre-installed candy crush, or being able to swap components as needed.
minimalism for me is low system requirements and low software surface area, if's too large and monolithic, you lose control of your system and you end up with inexplicable bugs when your GUI programs end up having bugs relating to dbus or systemd, how do you even begin to debug that shit, I don't want that shit running on my system.
>>106867472No program has ever had bugs relating to systemd. It shows up twice in your life, once when you turn on the computer and once when you turn it off. You don't need to debug it because it just works.

>>106867036>There is only one correct metric that should be counted when dealing with software, and that is the **user's cognitive load**This is objectively false, there are several metrics by which you can measure minimalism, I won't waste my time explaining every possible way you could define it because even a 50IQ retard knows minimalism isn't limited in definition to "cognitive load", in fact that seems to me like one of the least intuitive definitions of the word. Just straight-up fart sniffing retard-tier opinion.
>>106867036>minimalism = ubiquitylahmaoHe's right about the cringe terminal LARPing, though.>Computers and the programs running on it are tools and their purpose is to be functional, not decorative.Right again.A lot of the wording is retarded but his heart's in the right place.
>>106867036you form the neural networks responsible with the shortcuts and that's that. literally minimalist experience. only information of interest is shown, and I have instant access to anything I need. and the load on the system is minimal, all resources available for any application I need. that's why some games run better than on windows, or I don't waste any time or brain cycles with irrelevant bullshit from DEs.it just takes some time to set up, and to learn the shortcuts which you set in the most natural way for you, and then you benefit from that setup for years and years. I made my setup years ago, I never ever touched it since. at all.
>>106867036Dumb minimalism>Low RAM use, low CPU use, bare minimum softwareChad minimalism>System comes with everything you need and nothing more.>Also known as "It just works™"
>>106869434>need third-party apps to edit basic settings and perform other basic tasks, like editing a text filevs>everything is either commands in your terminal, or just a text file, and you can edit those with your terminal. This comparison doesn't come out the way you'd like it to.
>Ubiquitous, understandable, intuitive and replicableOverreaction or not, this "wave" of minimalism is a direct response to a lot of these ubiquitous setups, most notably industry and professional setups, open or closed source, being absolutely brain-dead fucktarded, alien, backwards, self-contradictory and borderline dangerous. The inadvertent over-complication is just the stance horseshoeing. People reacting to and solving real problems partially rediscovering why the industry setups got so fucked up in the first place
>>106867036Fully agree with the twm part. Tinkering/ricing is a hobby for some people, which is perfectly fine, but they need to stop pretending it's anything other than that or serving any practical purpose. However, it's not just cognitive load. I am using stock ubuntu, which is basically retard proof, but I am far fromcalling this a minimal setup; there is so much junk in terms of software and functionality that I removed, disabled or simply never use.
