I will probably be forced to switch to it soon, and I've only heard bad things about it. Is it truly as bad as people say? How much of a headache is it really, and is it always possible to somehow get incompatible applications to work?
>>106867470It just works (on Ubuntu)
>>106867470why will you be forced to switch to the inferior option?
>>106867470Fine for general desktop use on AMD, Intel, and NvidiaGaming is only stable on AMD
>>106867470> Is it truly as bad as people say?It is the most stupid API ever made.> How much of a headache is it really?Nothing is standardized. Compositor cross incompatible apps are impossible to get working. If you want to develop Software targeting Wayland the headaches become even worse.Since it is obvious sabotage, I'd recommend to never install it and never contribute anything to it.It can't be fixed by design.
i kinda dont see a difference
forced vsync is actually quite a headache, and some compositors still can't handle selection paste/middle mouse scroll
>>106867470>I will probably be forced to switch to it soonNo you wont
From having dealt with it for years and years:Good for new featuresBad for nvidiaThis remains true as of right the fuck now.
>>106867649For "security reasons", but not out of my own volition. From everything I've read though, the security benefits are tiny in comparison to the problems it brings with it.>>106867679>obvious sabotageThis is what it kind of feels like to me. Linux has finally gotten to the point where it's actually quite comfortable to use, but suddenly many people are forced to install something that just breaks a good chunk of Linux applications in countless ways. I've gotten very used to Xfce for example, and won't be able to use it anymore.
>>106867470I used to use Wayland because I have two monitors with different refresh rates, now I use Xlibre with KWin-X11-Lite on Plasma and it's a slightly better experience for me on that than on Wayland.I guess the only reason to still use Wayland is if you have multiple monitors with different DPI scaling, want HDR, or if you need to configure color profiles for your monitor since X still doesn't support those. Maybe it will with Xlibre one day, who knows.
>>106867679>it is obvious sabotageEverything done by the CoC mafia seems to be designed to destroy FOSS.
>>106867722>forced vsyncI thought there was a variable you put in a config file to disable it.
>>106867470dwm runs on X11.
>>106868295it has been broken for months since its broken in the linux kernel
>>106868273>I used to use Wayland because I have two monitors with different refresh ratesWorks on xorg>I guess the only reason to still use Wayland is if you have multiple monitors with different DPI scalingWorks on xorg>if you need to configure color profiles for your monitorWorks on xorg
>>106868273> different DPI scaling, want HDR, or if you need to configure color profilesFor your desktop or other pedestrian things that, for whatever reason, use X primitives.Specific applications that need this have just been doing it themselves for decades and decades so no issue. The first high-end monitors supporting > 8 bit color depth for our lab all used X on the systems that drove them.
wayland drove me back to windows
>>106867659So it's hated by Nvidia users mainly?>>106867679Forgive my ignorance, but what are some apps that are 'compositor cross incapatible'? I've just personally not had any issues with video rendering, or gaming, or sound related issues on Wayland so I'm not sure what some of those problem apps are. Meanwhile X11 made me pipe audio through another porgram just to share it to others.
>>106868930>Meanwhile X11 made me pipe audio through another porgram just to share it to others.X11 and Wayland has nothing to do with audio, what are you talking about?
>>106868999Maybe I'm dumb as shit then... But I remembered looking it up like a year ago when I first got on ubuntu and was told audio sharing over discord didn't work because X11.All in all i'm just ignorant on the whole thing, and that's why i'm asking.
