is there an argument for using it via KVM, with firewalls and such on the linux end? is that any safer than running win7 on bare metal?

Windows 7 is blazing fast off a SSD and can work well on old Ivy Bridge systems. Might even run off Haswell, I think. Make sure you use Supermium with it.
