Is there any good optical storage tech out there?

Blu-ray is expensive and limited in size (100-128 GB) and a bad option for data hoarding even knowing how long the data can stay on it.
Every time I look for better options, I see some articles about insane new tech capable of storing 2 PB, but of course, I still can't buy it.

Is there a promising option that might actually make it past the prototype phase?

will this ever be available ?

Just asked
2026 1st commercial product
>>
>>106895383
Nope. Optical storage tech available for consumers is dead. All the money now is on flash storage and enterprise is keeping HDD and tape on life support. Best you can do is BDXL with modded drives.
>>
>>106895818
>modded drives
How ?
>>
>>106895949
firmware mods
>>
>>106895818
Why modded? My LG and Pioneer drives work just fine with BDXL discs.

for what ?

It sucks, why can't we have reliable long term storage without buying hundreds of expensive blu-rays...
I don't even care about random rw I just want reliable storage that isn't 15 years old.

50GB blu-rays are cheap, about $2 each.
just burn more
>>
>>106896491
the other anon didn't understand either...
I just never heard of any mod improving bdxl r/w.
My burner works fine with them.

>>106896507
10tb HDDs are about 160$ for a single drive
for 10tb of 50gb blu-rays I need 200 discs and it will cost be 400$ (for 2$ discs)

Regarding storage devices
(cheap, long lasting, high capacity)
pick 2
>>
>>106896613
well we don't have long lasting, high capacity storage do we ?
>>
>>106896567
forgot to add data on blu-rays cannot be modified

Tape or certain industrial grade flash drives (both SD and SSD). Only the faggot consumer grade flash modules are unreliable as cold storage long term.
>>
>>106896657
SSDs memory cells can't store electrons for long when not powered on, industrial or not.
(feel free to prove me wrong)

I wouldn't be surprised if a modern SLC drive could hold data for more than 100 years.
So many phones and devices like the PSP and iPods from the early 2000s have their firmware stored on flash and they still mostly work without any issues.

10 years retention at 55ÂșC
Should be a lot longer than that when stored at room temperature or refrigerator
>>
>>106896670
I admittedly can't tell you about SSDs for certain,
but I have reliable information that SD Cards rated for such purposes are indeed very reliable after storing data for 10+ years, with no bit flips. I am willing to give that a chance.
>>
>>106896762
I had a lot of sd cards.
All lost data, got corrupted and even stopped working.
I used them in lots of different devices, they always stopped working within 5 years, sometimes much quicker, sometimes even when brand new.
I bought cheap ones, expensive ones, big capacity, small capacity, the only thing that didn't change is that I only buy microsd.
Either I am very unlucky either this type of storage is very unreliable.
>>
>>106895477
any other promising things similar to this ?

Firmware mod is needed if you want to either watch 4K movies on 1080p only drive, or ripping movies.

tell that to my samsung 970 that booted after 467 days of being unplugged from the wall and sitting in a 100+ degree garage.
>>
>>106901657
467 days is not long
try that after 10years
>>
>>106901486
Tape storage is neat but it's definitely not as good as optical storage, hell it's not even as good as flash storage. Are you fucking crazy?
It's magnetically charged particles no different than a cassette tape.
