holy shit that's a hell of a jump, genuinely curious, why did you hold out on the K6 family so long.

they were good chips, my 450 was eventually upgraded to a K6-2+ 570 I punched to 615 with a 3dfx Voodoo 5500 and a huge copper Pentium 3 cooler, I loved that damn thing, had it for a while even after stepping up to the Athlon series, used it to host my Halflife OZDM server until WON ended and Steam took over. What made you hold onto that so long?

If all you're doing is shitposting here the 1700X is still overkill.
I bought a whole PC with an R5 1600, because I needed a new GPU and the difference between just the GPU and that whole PC was marginal.
Anyway, the 1600 surprised me a lot, it's still very snappy, more than I expected.

Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4, Athlon XP, Core2Duo? No idea which one without digging it out it was on a $3k laptop in like 2006ish, Q6600, i5-2500k, some other k series shorlty after the 2500k IIRC I think I sold my mobo with everything to my friend for cheap, 3950x, 9950x and then random ones for other builds like HTPCS, plex servers, etc. over the years.

Q6600 is my favorite CPU of all time probably though. Thing was a monster and I overclocked it to 3.6Ghz on air with my case off and a fan blowing in it on the highest setting. Also in my first full build from scratch PC.

GPU was no idea until the sapphire radeon 9600, then a nvidia gt 7800m, then an XFX? nvidia 9800 gtx, then dual SLI nvidia 560ti EVGA and MSI, then EVGA 670 4GB, then a EVGA 2080 Super, and now a MSI 5080.

The 670 is probably the greatest card I will ever own. That thing literally was still playing modern games perfectly fine on my PC in 2019? when I upgraded. That 4GB of VRAM in 2012 was insane and also when I started using triple monitors (now 57" UW).

RIP EVGA, the goats, my favorite mobo might have been my 790i ultra.
>>
>>106916429
imho the Radeon 9700 was the absolute GOAT GPU even though I never owned one, no other card was this far ahead of its time and stayed relevant for so long in an era where GPUs became almost obsolete in a single generation.

I was working fulltime as a linux/UNIX/mainframe (RedHat/AIX/IBM Z) sysadmin and had far more powerful computers at work. I only really used the PC at home as a SSH client. I was doing lots of drugs and partying every weekend and barely had any time to turn the thing on other than for oncall. I might have had another AMD cpu between those two but I can't recall what it was.

I became driver and compatibility issues aware only with my first "modern" gpu, radeon 9800xt.

We had a Willamette Celeron, 1.7 GHz 128kB cache, 256 MB DDR, SiS integrated graphics until 2009. I didn't realize I could upgrade the computer, I was actually relatively technically inclined. I fixed my own bicycles since I was 9 years old.
I was reminiscing about our next computer today, I recently refurbished the graphics card. I had to modify the heatsink a little to fit. It came from a different card.
In hindsight we should have bought an X4 Athlon II instead of the Phenom II X2 and the 1GB version of the HD 5750 instead of the 512MB model. It was a prebuilt system.

Must be a wealthy person thing, I can't understand why you'd even do that. The performance difference surely can't even be recognizable for most use-cases.

People like playing with new toys. Sure you can buy old parts for pennies, overclock and tweak and get the same high but you miss out on sharing your experience in real time with others, you're reading 10, 15, 20 year old forum posts.

Pentium 4 2.4GHz
Athlon 64 3500+
Core 2 Duo (I don't remember the Ghz but it was on a ThinkPad t400, top cpu for that)

don't remember my family's PCs
first got some shitty prebuilt to play free MMOs and tinker with OSes before the 2010s
in the meantime had a couple Thinkpads, sticking with a T61p i think? so some Core 2 Duo
then finally built a PC with an i7 4770k when it released
then did my current build with a Ryzen 3900x
i'll build a new PC when there's a good reason

The more money I have, the less I upgrade. It's like I went through several phases:
1) Being a student / not having my first job yet: It meant having to suffer with outdated hardware for years, only getting a upgrade when it was strictly necessary for academics.
2) Having a shitty sporadic income from temp starter jobs + Crisis / burst economic bubbles: some upgrades to extend the life of a PC, but unable to afford a new one yet. A CPU, a stick of ram, maybe a new GPU.
3) Stable job, plenty of money: Upgrade a lot, play everything, hardware dick measuring contests on internet.
4) Get old: By this time hardware does not become outdated as fast as during 1 and 2, computers last a lot more, I start dreading changes. I keep telling myself that the PC is perfectly fine despite the obvious bottlenecks from having a modern GPU slotted on a geriatric machine.
