Do you still use usb flash drive in the big 2025? What niche uses you have for it?

I put OS creation media on them for when I don’t feel like sticking my expensive drive in your malware box. Speaking of which, how do I get this pcb out of the enclosure so I can stick a new one in? Drive has sentimental value.

I still put music on a usb drive to listen to in the car.
Fuck spotify, fuck itunes and carplay + I'm not getting fined for fiddling with my cellphone. Here we risk losing our drivers license for 2 weeks when getting caught using our phone while driving.

I kinda anna do this. I have a few collectors thumb drives they gave out with collectors edition of games. really nice drives but unfortunately they are all USB 2.0 and are either 2GB or 4GB.
It would be nice to upgrade them to a modern USB3.0 drive with at least 256GB and retain the LED lights and shit.
alas i dont have the soldering skills to do this.

Those are very cool, way nicer than my Rolex drive. I just want to hot glue another pcb in this one but they built it as good as their watches and it won’t fucking budge. If you ever do yours, post it would be neat to see such cool drives retrofitted

256GB flash drive with my music collection on it so I can listen to everything on my laptop while traveling. Chinkshit flash media wears out too quickly if you're writing to it often so this is ideal as a write once, read often use case.

Last time I tried that was like 20 years ago and it worked like ass.
Is it better now? I'd be willing to try it if it just werks instead of dicking around. Would be cool to have the install speed of my gigabit LAN.
The downside I guess is when people don't have a spare computer or LAN cable/port.

A lot of cloud storage is HDDs.
AWS S3 one zone Express(!!)? HDDs. Around 4-7ms latency, in the same DC. Why? Head seek times. They just spread the blocks over the fastest tracks lots of HDDs so that access patterns get smoothed out. The slower parts of the disks are used for cold storage.

Only solutions that explicitly promise being SSDs and sub-millisecond random access actually are SSDs. And those are more expensive.

>>
>>106931480
I never get anywhere close to the advertised speeds with these things, they’re even bigger lies than SSDs. Just like I have some flash drives that advertise 300-400mb/s and you’re lucky to get 150 just like in your bench. At least with a portable ssd, you get closer to the advertised speeds.
>>
>>106932896
Mine is connected to a 10 year old Intel Atom Celeron. It's no surprise it's not performing to it's full capability.
>>
>>106932928
You’ll get the same results on your main pc more or less. These things are limited by heat when they’re that tiny. Even if it could hit those numbers somewhere other than Samsung’s lab, it’s not going to do it for any meaningful length of time.
>>
>>106932947
Yes I do notice my flash drives get hot.
The multi-hundred MB sequential write speed doesn't make a difference, what matters is the 4k random write speed. And most flash drives are sub 500 kB/s if not 50 kB/s in that metric making them completely unusable for anything other than playing torrented movies on your LG WebOS Smart TV.

dumb question but can I use that usb/SD camera adapter to connect my flash drive to my lightning iphone? Does it work as a regular drive or does it act as a dummy photo repository, because they highlight it as a way to transfer photos not files

>How the fuck is a flash drive niche?
Flash drive itself is not niche, as it's one of the most used things nowadays. But anything can have niche uses, like how you can use hairpin for lockpicking or petroleum jelly for fire starter. As in "flash drive" case, you can use it for being hackerman such as USB k*ller or cold wallet.
>Do you use the cloud?
Sadly, that's how people store their data now. I just diversify where I put my files. Like the classic "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

>>
>>106934746
>spray&pray technique
It's not that I randomly put my my files elsewhere, just trying to minimize risk and not using only one storage. For example, using google drive for sharijg non-sensitive work related stuff and their network effect (simply trying to compromise with normal people) and using physical storage data/RAID/NAS for personal/senstive data.
>>

A Yamaha drum pad that I use supports them for extra storage. A portable speaker supports it to directly play files from it.
Sometimes I use it to directly give people some data.
I also used them at work to directly boot from them with some Linux distro that was meant to identify hardware problems.
That made the guys I worked with believe that I'm some kind of computer wizard.
>>
>>106935045
Both actually, usb flash drive becomes "obsolete" as people don't use it for data storage and "burgoid sold his soul to corporations" as people use cloud storage now.

>>106935132
>LOL, this is kinda the same as opening your terminal will make you le hackerman
It was kinda sad as those guys did work on some of the most advanced machines in the field. But if they had a computer problem, they would just replace the whole thing, let IT set it up and put it in its place. That actually can be insanely expensive, when it, for example, just needed a stick of ram replaced.
>>
>>106930471

>>
>>106931648
Small external sdd or sd cardreader.
>>
>>106933191
I don't have an adapter like that but yes should work. Lightning is just the connector. protocol is usb2. So same principle applies: you need a 'host adapter' so the phone becomes the host and drive will be usb mass storage. Normally when you connect a phone to pc, the pc is the host and the phone behaves as a device connected.
>>
>>106935428
>But if they had a computer problem, they would just replace the whole thing, let IT set it up and put it in its place
Lmao, those guys are smart but not resourceful. Why need to replace the whole thing when a simple trick just works?
