Is pic related still a good entry point for the basics of Unix/Linux programming? I've done the work on Unix programming in C before but I'm looking for a good way to build a broader base understanding of the system.

What are you actually trying to get out of this?
Just broader technical understanding of OS? Try this wiki.osdev.org
Linux internals? Try Robert Love, "Linux Kernel Development"
I have no idea why people read these really old reference material type books. They're usually neither fun nor useful

that is a really good book

I want to build up the 'classic' basics of Linux development, so I want to get more broadly familiar with the tools and the operating system.

I've read it
It's a good book and will teach you a lot

Then look at Linux from Scratch.
