Lead-free solder from a local component retailer.I mostly do repairs of through-hole components like DIP chips, capacitors, game controller analog sticks and such. Every now and then make or service a cable.Has served me well so far for everything I've needed. Getting into SMD soldering would be super useful but my hands aren't good enough for that kinda shit.

No cup thingie with wiring that it supposed to clean the solder tip, I read that crap will slowly kill your solder tip when it can last many years.A stupid habit in the past was simply scraping superficial oxidation off my most used tip. Retarded. That eventually ruined. My Just Works Perfectly solution since has been to put a bit of paste on the iron tip while hot and immediately add solder and then quickly scrub off with the damp cleaning sponge that I always use. I haven't bought a new tip in years beyond what I picked up years ago. My iron remains in great shape, but the internal circuitry of the main box needs a checkup to see if anything is starting to drift too out of spec. I picked up a Hakko FX888 not long ago as a backup unit, plus it can help me service my 936. I also though of trying out Dual-Wielding irons for certain kinds of SMD parts, but have yet to get around to experimenting.
