I concur. There's been some improvements in DD and planar magnetic designs. AMTS basically serves the same purpose as Audeze's fazor but it does seem to work better for tuning. Most of the time anyway. So we did get planars with better tuning and some DD headphones with much lower THD compared to older models. It's only electrostats that haven't really changed all that much outside of more models with removable cables and some decently tuned ones like the first CRBN and the Corina

One thing for sure is that QC is a bigger issue and overall driver fragility and longevity is a thing. Yes, most of the time. Sometimes the headphones have resonances which make treble sound sharper and those cannot be corrected with EQ but for the vast majority of headphones a high shelf filter will suffice. If you don't get how EQ works you can just open autoeq, copy the preset and import it into the EQ software of your choice.

My Aeons are over 2 years old and I haven't had any problems. I've heard of some Aeon 2s having some issues with the membrane but I think that was a faulty batch. Hell, he sent me a free set of pads once, even after my headphones were out of warranty just because I asked.

Very pleasantly surprised by Koss Porta Pro Classic headphones, they're almost a drop-in, on-ear replacement for Drop HD6XXs I've been wearing for a while. Only things I could really think of to change this up are maybe changing their mount to KSC75 ear-hooks since I find the foam perfectly comfortable, and carefully taking them apart to solder in MMCX sockets in place of the wire.

cloud 3 was by far the worst. they sounded outright distorted and required installing hyperx spyware and fucking around with the EQ to make them slightly better.

Wireless latency has been solved by 2.4Ghz dongles. Mice, controllers and even headsets have moved to wirless and the latency is either the same as or in some cases even better than wired latency.
The problem is that headphones manufacturers refuse to go wireless or at least offer wirless options for their good headphones because they have to pander to boomers. Boomers still believe that wireless is automatically bad. There is also the fact that snakeoil wire sales is a big market for those high end headphones so those companies will not go wireless untill there is a big market shift.
One massively untapped market is open back wireless 2.4ghz headphones. They literally don't exist (no bluetooth addons don't count). Even with headsets there is only 2 (just TWO) open back headsets and they are bad gamer slop. Even the new Sennheiser HDB 630 is just bluetooth and they made it closed back.

I've been using HD 6XX for many years now, I replace the head padding and earpads every 1 or 2 years.
Replacing the head padding really made the top of my head hurt, it's like it's slowly burrowing into my skull and after a few hours it really hurts, even when I take them off.
So I recently ended up buying a capra strap instead, which an anon here suggested.
However, after using it for just a month, the capra strap is also permanently stretching and becoming dented, it reached a point where when I wear the headphones, my head bends the strap so much that my head is touching the unpadded plastic behind the strap already.
Wtf is going on? I've already adjusted the length setting of each side to be shorter or longer, but it seems to make no difference.
It wasn't always like this. And no I'm not having skull cancer either, my head is a normal shape.

I have 660S2 for like 14 months or so, already changed ear pads to new fresh ones. Whenever I have urge to toss $1000+ on another new headphones I just listen couple of song on these Senny's and that urge disappear.

I would consider go for planars but I know that I will lose the tonality of 6 series and these are just seductive and can't get enough of them.

I would hope that Sennheiser get a grip together and release HD900 a combination of 6 series mid range and tonality with wide soundstage of 800 and not piercing skull treble with full flat extension of bass that is superb fast for a dynamic driver but a man can dream. (660S2 have really nice extended bass, its not "best" but still sennheiser best on open headphone, I'm quite surprised that open headphones can achieve such an articulate bass)

I'm more impressed that there is actually "Bass" in open headphones. Whenever I had open headphones before (although cheaper ones) they very anemic or there was no subbass at all making them lifeless with a hole in that region. I can only imagine what DAC Noire can achieve with fast planar driver and subbass but thats not a real surprise. (I would love to give them a listen tho)

Playing extremely loud probably causes resonances at lower frequencies which I might still be able to pick up but they would sound like the lower frequency not the original one.

Yes, I will now answer your question. If you mean after EQ then any low distorting planar will sound better than basically every IEM after EQ due to the reasons I mentioned already. Even a HE400SE which is fairly cheap but built like shit, sadly. Otherwise Audeze LCD-2 or DCA Aeon are good options. If you don't want to EQ then you'll most likely have to spend around 1k or more for something with good stock Harman compliance that also has bass. So higher end DCA cans like Noire X/XO since Audeze simply cannot tune their shit properly.

There is no "spatial effect" with headphones or IEMs. What you get from pinna interactions is a change in FR that might or might not be congruent with the desired FR for timbre.
These HpTFs have been shown to not be congruent with HRTF, pinna interactions are not a definite positive.

The "illusion" of soundstage is real because of the lack of isolation and general fit around the ear, not because of special properties inherent to headphone response vs IEMs. Isolation/openness and crosstalk are not the same. FR will also change the perception of soundstage.
Proper localization of sounds in space and soundstage are also not the same, most people describe soundstage as a perceived size of sound. Imaging is also not sound localization, we know that for stereo mixes, sounds are panned in various ways. FR will change these effects but that's about it.

Tried out the Dyson OnTrac with an USB-C cable demo kit on a tech shop yesterday. I usually use cheap Sennheiser IEM's for commute, however I liked how pleasant the sound felt.

I now think I might get a wired headphone for commute. I don't want any batteries on it and would prefer if type c output was an option. I have also been enjoying the SHP9500's at home for a long time.

Any recommendations?

Tldr; need a wired headphone for commute with a sound signature similar to the SHP9500's.

I mainly game and metal/black metal enjoyer. I got recommended the KSC75, and ordered them + a headstrap from aliexpress and some new pads. Also ordered the KPH40X while they're still on sale. I just stumbled upon the FiiO JT1 and it made me itch to get those aswell.

Any thoughts on these 3 for gaming (CS2 high rank) and metal/black metal music? Should I just grab the FiiO aswell (On sales in my country for ca $45).

You can get off the shelf drivers for $10 a pop from Digikey, which are also used in multi-hundred dollar headphones.
DMS' Omega and Capra Audio's Satyr 2 and 3 are built around that Peerless HPD-50 driver.

I've been trying to get a HE-5 from 2010 for a very long time now, but they're mega rare and very expensive. Very good though.

KSC75 owner and metal enjoyer here. The KSC75 and the KPH40X, while they have a very clear sound and are great for the price, have a big lack of deep bass (which metal uses a lot) and are not resolving enough to properly play that style of music, especially with death metal it becomes quite the garbled mess. I would look at some planars if I were you, you'll enjoy a much quicker sound and harder hitting bass. Maybe a Hifiman XS Stealth, which is like 200€ used. Get a decent amp for it, too. I'd skip the Fiio, it's closed back. It will get very muddy with that music.

NTA but if a headphone distorts when pushed to the limit then it's not a good headphone. Like that other anon said, you have to account for peaks in music and movies. Bass distortion sounds pleasant until you reach the point when it distorts so bad it seems your headphones are broken. 10 dB peaks in older tracks or movies are common and if you add EQ to fix the lackluster bass most DD have to the equation you end up with pretty bad distortion at times. My Lambdas are kind of similar as in they need an extreme amount of EQ to reach Harman compliant bass(over 15 dB boost) and while they don't distort on most music, some movies are loud enough that EQ+the peak makes them reach the ~115 dB threshold at which electrostats go from 0 distortion to awful distortion and it's not pleasant in the slightest. One of the reasons why imo planars are better. LCD-X won't distort even over 120dB and needs less correction for a good bass response. The older Lambdas are kind of better in that regard since they use glued on pads and thus can reach a linear bass response. You don't necessarily need nigger levels of bass for bad distortion, some movies have bigger peaks.

Motherboard DACs are just stuck in the previous generation. All the new development is in USB UAC 2 because the latency problem was solved over 20 years ago and the market is much larger. It doesn't help the inside of a PC case is a hostile RF environment either. Even USB dongle DACs perform differently depending on how close they are to a GPU.

I've been using EQ'd open dynamics for well over a decade and have never once noticed bass distortion.
It's a non-issue unless you own airline headphones.

The problem for me with the MiniDSP Ears is they do not provide documentation for how they produce the over-ear compensation curves, which is strange because they clearly label the IEM curve as a diffuse field curve based on the Etymotic ER4SR.

I need a recommendation for headphones. I've had ATH-M50Xs for quite some time, but I'd like something more neutral. I've played around with the eq a bit and I'd prefer more neutral headphones, and I want to upgrade. I've tried some iem (truthear pure and the tanchjim 4U) and I like them for casual listening, but I'd also like a good pair of headphones

I have the behringer u-phoria um2 i use for my AT2020 mic and for my headphones / speakers. I just replaced my AKG q701s with the Meze 109 Pros and i realized the audio out for this um2 is only 16bit. The 109 pro are easy to drive but should i be buying a new DAC that's 32 bit? Will i even notice a difference in games or spotify (lossless) as it seems most stuff is usually 16 bit still isnt it? I dont think ive even seen the option to select a bit rate of audio in a game.

If i will be getting more out of these headphones with a better DAC what should i get? I've seen the k5 pro ess thrown around a lot

I have behringer, scarlett, two literally who aliexpress audio interfaces and a E2x2 and can confirm picrel, E2x2 is audibly transparent comparable to my many DACs, other interfaces sound like shit.

If impedance of the Meze 109 Pro is similar to its sibling 105 Aer, it's not that variable, so the 10 Ohm output impedance wouldn't make too huge of a difference.
Otherwise, I'd be most worried about noise and channel unbalance, but if those were a problem you would most likely already have noticed.
For 99.999... % of content, 16 or 24 bit won't make a difference.
If you want a cheap way to try you could get an Apple dongle, it's technically very good (low output impedance, low noise and distortion, no channel imbalance, flat FR) and fixes all potentially audible flaws of the Behringer. It's not that powerful either, but that won't matter with your cans.

Ill take a look at these, I basically never touch the nobs i usually just use the windows volume control so buttons arent really a drawback. I do physically swap from headphone output to speakers which are connected to a 1Mii Bluetooth Digital Amplifier but other than that there's not really any touching of the interface. I did order the k5 just to have something to compare the sound of this behringer to. This SMSL DL100 looks interesting as there is a 3.5 and 6.5 out, but didnt look like you toggle between them with a switch or button
