Is the zippo lighter the best invention in humankind?
You guys got any favorite lighters?

i don't smoke so having to constantly refuel a zippo is just shit
i use a candle lighter
refillable butane lighter I got at daiso for $1
>>
>>106945538
theres definitely no way they lose fuel that fast, its contained inside without much exposure to outside air

It is true though and not even hyperbole. Try it yourself, fill it up, close it.
On average you get like 7-10 days. Best case maybe 14-20 days based on where you keep it.
Worst case is like 5 days sometimes.

It's why I put a piece of bike tubing around the opening on mine when I still used one, with that it lasts very long.
>>
>>106945611
that little trick of yours just got you on big oil's radar
>>
>>106945625
fuck, what I meant to say is that it fell into a piece of bike tube by accident

I'd take 5 Bics over a zippo.

Butane lighters are better
They don't leak
This is my current EDC
It's a Japanese brand called Tsubota Pearl
They also make cigarette sized lighters that are pretty cool because you can put them in a cigarette case or pack of smokes and they fit

Get the butane insert, it packs a wallop.
>>
>>106945814
ill never understand preppers and the zombie apocalypse guys who swear by wooden matches
they can break, get wet, fail to even light
but they'll still choose these over a regular bic lighter
>>
>>106945832
have you ever tried a weatherproof match
those motherfuckers are crazy, i lit one inside once. really bad idea. they do not go out easily.
>>
>>106945832
a real prepper has gobs of both
also i have like 600 tea lights
really hope i never have a fire.
>>
i need my zippo cause it lasts longer than my bics and can actualyl light shit in the wind
>>
>>106945523
For me it's bic disposable lighters.
>>
>>106945538
It's great design if you're a smoker and use it enough to outpace the evaporation. And fluid lighters are more windproof than butane ones. But yeah if you see someone with a zippo it's pretty much guaranteed he smokes regularly.
>>
>>106945523
Zippos have great marketing from Hollywood and from soldiers using them, but man do they suck as lighters if you've ever used one.
>>106945538
>>106945557
>>106945573
All correct. It's also not trivial to refill them. The wicks, flint, and rayon also have to be replaced when needed. It's a huge maintenance item. Cool collectors pieces though.

>>106945814
This might be the actual answer if you want to do some atompunk/WW2 larping and not have to stock up on lighter fluid. Existed at the same time, just as /fa/ and way more efficient.

Of course once you have the coolest, most efficient lighting device there's not really much to do with it. Lighting candles is the example I thought of first, but everyone uses a barbecue lighter for that anyway because you burn your hand if you don't light it upside down.

Unless you smoke. But then you're a fucking smoker. Haha, tricked you. Despite picrel, this is actually an antismoking diatribe post. I can't believe people are still falling for the smoking meme. Or sucking on Elfbars in a public setting. As soon as everyone catches a whiff someone lit up a cigarette, everyone's mood dampens. "Why does it smell like cigarettes?" Oh because some dumbass can't stop himself from going the gas station, asking for someone to reach an item behind the counter, and then spending money on it. It's oh so cool until you start coughing like you're fucking seventy years old, and then all the sex appeal is immediately lost. Now you're presenting as both a smoker who smells terrible with yellow eyes and no teeth, you're also coughing like you have some disease! Social distancing is back, and it's exclusively to get the fuck away from you. And then the gall to say "I fucking deserve a cigarette". Nigga you deserve good health and a loving family. Stop washing your life up to line Philip Morris' pockets you absolute moron

you can put a gasket ring on it to drastically reduce evaporation, but honestly gasoline is just terrible to store

my mistake. It's just benzin interchangeably here
>>
I prefer the torch variants since they don't leak constantly and can actually light campfires and cigarettes without washing your hand in a huge fireball.
>>
>>106946267
I've never seen a smoker bitch in such a long sentence which advocates to their testosterone fueled side.
>>
>>106945538
It's from a time where everyone was a chain smoker and especially the people who would be in need of a windproof lighter in the first place such as construction workers, maritime, navy, soldiers etc. They would be out of lighter fluid before any evaporated at all just normally using it!
>>
One thing I don't like about the Zippo is how the insert rises out of position and prevents you from closing it when you flick it open and shut a few times in quick succession. Is it that hard to add some sort of retaining tab to keep everything in place?
>>
>>106946992
Yeah I assume.
However adding a simple lip with an oring on the closing mechanism would've massively improved the design.
>>
>>106946575
these things run on anything, petrol straight from the pump is no problem
you can fill it up with any that burns, even lamp oil
>>
>>106945523
runs dry when stored so idk, it's not really that good.
regular gas lighter is much more dependable for occasional use

>>

they should make a gun insert

I use the corner of a sandwhich bag cut to form a seal between the bottom of the insert and the chassis. Works well enough for me to have noticed a difference in how often I refill.
Love me Zippo.

>It's great design if you're a smoker and use it enough to outpace the evaporation.
If you smoke a lot then you'll be refilling it a lot, which is a pain in the ass, so you'll probably want to minimise that by getting with more capacity and more easily refillable. It's not "great design if".
>But yeah if you see someone with a zippo it's pretty much guaranteed he smokes regularly.
If you see someone with any lighter, chances are that person is a regular smoker. But yes, it's definitely not the kind of thing you can just have lying around in your house and expect it to light up 3 months later.

>>106945535

this. not great. if you are using it constantly and refilling it every couple of days it might be alright.

i do like how the cases and inserts are interchangeable.
