Is ham radio still a good hobby? What radios do you guys use?
>>
kenwood ts-990s
>>

I bought that same Baofeng and found the local repeaters. It was just boomers whinging day and night. They honestly sounded like a bunch of 50+ year faggots using code words to arrange clandestine butt fucking sessions at rest areas and state parks. The only time things got interesting was when I started randomly calling them faggot boomers without identifying myself.
>>
>>106957788
they were talking about something else besides their gear?
rare
>>
i want to run a local AM station but the faggot regulations make it next to impossible because boomer megacorps sucked up all the licenses in the 90s and won't let go of them
>>
>>106957798
Okay so if they are talking about the size of their “antennas” and TRANSceivers, that’s not gay code talk?
>>
>>106957757
I've thought about making the Ham Radio License. Would make a handy skill, if there's a power outage or something alike
>>
>broadcasting your conversations in a public domain
What is the appeal? Is it just for boomers who don't know how to use a computer?
>>
>>106957856
>b-b-but maybe one day all other communications won't work
This is never happened in my lifetime.

i should have gotten into this hobby earlier!

Don't know how to do anything other than listen to the weather radio.
Thrifted it for $10, plus another $10 for antennas. So wasn't a big money dump.

I've got several Baofeng and B-TECH HTs and a 25X4 in my car. Also have a FRS/GMRS Midland radio and a Midland CB I never fully set up in the car

it happens all the time for me when i'm out in the mountains. do you guys not go outside?

pretty much. not a problem if you're wealthy. you just buy whatever station and take over their license and equipment.

Meh. Every market consolidates. It's just AM radio is over and done with in terms of corporate evolutionary buyouts.

What ever industry you're in, legal clout will eventually sideline you.

All you can hope for is societal breakdown if you want it all reset uo the start again.
>>
>>106957856
It's very useful in military situations where you might not have cellphone or internet access

I got a UV-5R like everyone else. I'm not in range of any repeaters so it's just a whole load of nothing where I live.
If you wanna start I would recommend pairing it with a super cheap SDR (https://www.rtl-sdr.com/about-rtl-sdr/) so you can actually scan and decode digital properly. Then if that seems fun, you grab a UV-5R or something (UV-5Rs are not really recommended now because they got too popular and were regulated into dust; just buy the chink special of 'same device different model name so it doesn't actually need to comply with the FCC regulations on that other model') there's plenty of cheap chinese ham radio transceivers out there. If you spend more than $30 you can even get a good one. You can also get a AIOC cable (https://github.com/skuep/AIOC) to attach your radio to a computer. You can start using it after that to send/receive digital transmissions.
When it comes to licenses, you should learn enough to stay out of trouble at least. Don't transmit on frequencies you don't understand since it may be something someone cares about enough to get the FCC to send you a mean letter. By in large, so long as you stick to frequencies that are not really used and don't cause interference or jamming, no regulatory agency will bother giving a shit. Consider a license if you want.

>>106957757
What's the point? This thing was interesting in the 80s or 90s when the internet and phones didn't exist, not today.
>>
>>106957757
- adalm pluto clone sdr + sirio sd 3000 mini discone antenna
- 2xQuansheng UV-K5, IJV firmware
- 4x4 - Motorola CM360 UHF mobile, Motorola GP340 handheld
- rtlsdr stick feeding plane tracker, 2xtbeam for meshtastic/meshcore
>>106957798
very good question anon
>>106960135
Also true. Having dual band ht/scanner in the 90s was god mode. It's empty barren desert now unless you want to listen to kids on pmr that are too young to have cellphones. There's still lots of traffic on the HF but nothing interesting is in english and hams are just dull and boring. Also if you're in a city and in apartment there's no way to have decent antenna and noise floor is so high you won't hear shit.
If you do offroading or some outdoor stuff with friends radios are still cool but more as a tool than as a hobby.
>>
ham fags have taken over frs/grmrs with their fucking nets and repeaters
>>
>>106957808
Take it from someone who has run AM radio stations - not only does AM sound shit but AM transmission sites are hell. They get hit by lightning all the time and need constant mowing. Many are also flood prone and the buried earth mat corrodes away eventually. Avoid

Radio and SDR are pretty cool. Also nice technical knowledge to have in our current times where every government desperately wishes to eradicate privacy and freedom of communication.
>>
What's the new radio everyone is using? It's not the baofeng uv5rs anymore. it's supposed to have better and more customizable firmware.
>>
>>106957808
You can still buy airtime on a 50 kW - 100 kW shortwave station and say whatever you want, no regulations whatsoever.

Quansheng UV-K5?
>>
>>106957757
Ham radio is fun if you have somebody to do it with. Otherwise its boring as hell.
>Be me

>Play with vhf. Learn shit, turns out its useful for things.
>Nobody to play with, venture into CW
>Its okay, pretty cool i made contact with a dude 500 miles away.

>Become less interested.
Uhf vhf i have multiple chinese radios. Because yeasu and kenwood are more expensive than they need to be.
>Inb4 shitty reciever goes def
Not a problem on quansheng uvk6.
For cw i use a QCX transciever kit with an amplifier and a classic paddle. 30 meter dipole running from my roof to a tree in my backyard.

LMAO, how do I get in on this? Just get any fullband handheld radio and hop frequencies until I find someone to troll?

I would love to have some radio station in home. Sounds very interesting.

Getting licensed is gay. Meshtastic is more interesting anyway with a lower cost of entry and no doxxing required.

cool, I'lll give it a try
Also what's up with the broken bot here?

>>106966708
Heltec v3 is the easiest way to get in on it. Check the meshmap to see if there's nodes in your area first.
If you have more cash to spend get a wismesh repeater mini too. They can stay online 24/7 with the solar power and you can connect to it using the heltec and meshtastic app.
