In a study by Iowa State University, the Pokéwalker had the lowest error rate among tested pedometers when counting steps at four different treadmill speeds. The Pokéwalker had a step-count error rate of less than 1%. A 2025 meta-analysis from the University of Mississippi found that Apple Watches had a mean absolute percentage error of 8.17% for step counts.

why is pokemon always trying to make people walk?

Yes, the Wii U Fit Meter is a reskin of the Pokéwalker. Nintendo always makes the most of everything in the production chain. Yamauchi and Yokoi teached them well.

pokemon should have always been about using the latest tech to get people outside, considering Tajiri's core inspiration for the series.
But the actual reason is japs love gimmicks, especially when they're fitness related.

Not only Pokémon. 3DS had you earn coins for walking. Stella Glow had some maps locked behind that, I think. And Rune Factory 4 let you trade those coins for in-game money.

*nintendo.
If they make their customers healthier, they live longer so they can buy more nintendo products.

In a sense it was.
The originals encouraged you to meet up with other people and transfer data, because you could only get everything by trading with someone else. And even when online trading became viable, the the PokéWalker gave you a reason to go outside anyway.
