Why did the keytar flop so bad? It looks just as cool as a guitar and is a superior instrument in every way
>>106960961why reinvent the wheel?
>>106960961Competent keyboarders are usually classic/jazz pianists originally. It's already hard enough to get them to play devils tech like a keyboard.Even fewer accept a keytar.
>>106960961>less expressive than guitar>more complicated/unreliable>normal keyboards already exist
>>106960961I wouldn't say it flopped. Certain styles of music still use them live for flare and show. But in terms of ergonomics, it's obviously way inferior to just playing a normal keyboard.
It's literally just a shittier keyboard. 5 octave range? Basically one handed? Fucking disgusting.
>>106960961So you get only one hand to play... on a fucking keyboard?
>>106961045polyphonic aftertouch and mpe could help make it more expressive.but i think the failure of the keytar is that it changes the entire way the instrument is played
>>106962318I mean, not really. Your right hand stays the same, all that changes is your left hand is used for expression, which isn't much different to monophonic synths. It is kind of crazy that we haven't really improved on the piano layout since the harpsichord though.
>>106962207>>106962289One handed is not as ridiculous as you might think. In general, the left hand in piano music is in charge of holding down the bass line and supporting chords while the right hand is what plays the melody. In a band setting, your left hand is often unused because guitars and bass will cover that part and generally (not always) the timbre from those instrument is preferable. So this just means you'd be playing some melody line with only your right hand anyway. Instead of hiding in the back, you can shred some cool scales on the keytar in front of an audience with just your right hand. Obviously this doesn't work if your keyboard part is full of a bunch of chords that need to be played with both hands but for many genres of music that's not the case.
>>106962365keyboard cat uses both paws to play
>>106960961some power metal bands use it live, so I wouldn't say it flopped
>>106960961Not enough keys. Keytars should have had two sets of keys one on either side and you sit down and play it like a big clarinet: your mouth controls the fx and vocoder
>>106962207>>106963105Anon, its 6 to 8 octave range due to the pitch shifting done with the left hand. You have 4 octaves of keys, and even then you can also hard shift what range you're working with. The point is being able to bend notes in the same way as a string instrument can, but you can do so with a keytar in a far wider range then you normally would be able to with an actual stringed instrument. >>106962318>polyphonic aftertouch and mpe could help make it more expressive. Those things have existed in "modern" keytars for the past 20 or so years. ones of the 00s and after are not the same as old keytars of the 80s.
>>106960961Do you play it? Link your youtube
>>106960961>Why did the keytar flop so bad?It didn't? Its still seen fairly often in some genres (power metal, live preformed electronica), and also in some countries (Japan).
>ITT retards who think that the left hand is not used for anything
>>106963105I understand, but piano is a two handed instrument. People want to hear both hands.
>>106964280No only piano nerds do. The average normalfag is not going to care about how many layers of harmony and counter melodies you have going on at once. They just want to hear something that sounds cool.
>>106960961>It looks just as cool as a guitarnot reallyyou can play keyboards at the same time as a guitar
>>106960961Damn right.
>>106964280Anon, keytars are for playing with a band, someone else is already providing the base line (bassest, drums, etc). Keytar is a lead/backup instrument.
