ITT discussions and evidence of the enshittification of technology.
The obvious example of yesterday's AWS outage is very in your face but I feel the normies have no idea things are getting worse until the AI (actually Indians) accidentally push some bad DNS configs and fuck up every service on the East coast.
But if they only knew about the things quietly breaking and getting worse over time.
Recently I've noticed Google maps giving increasingly braindead navigation instructions. Following them adds 10 minutes to the time estimate. Ignoring them and just taking the interstate has me arrive 5 minutes earlier.
A 15 minute differential on a 30 minute commute is wild. How bad do things need to get before they stop outsourcing literally everything?
>>
umping your thread but I have nothing to add rn
>>
the dogshit AI systems are destroying everything
>>
Pages shifting just after loading is enshittification to me. I clicked the button at its original location, but your stupid page shifted it and registered me clicking a different button.

Also the constant spam from every service is so shitty. The ugliest part of it is that it's just so thoughtless. People get to their jobs in marketing and just do what everyone does so EVERYone is spamming these shiitty promo emails to you or making you close out of 3 pop ups to sign up for shit on their website. FUCK YOU.

Also contact forms are shit. Give me your email like a real man.
>>
>>106962643
>Also contact forms are shit. Give me your email like a real man.
contact forms are easier to roll. you can use some api instead of running your own backend. sure sure run your own backend. but no
>>
The AWS thing was apparently a BGP problem rather than DNS.

Windows 12 still hasn't been announced because they're holding it hostage until people actually start using Windows 11. It would be nice to think they were working on it in secret, but I bet they aren't.
>>
>>106962671
Why do all websites have one of the same three cookie warnings? That's some lazy shit. I can literally tell how good a new website is, based on which of the cookie warnings it gives me.
>>
>>106962710
so its all 'official' and "just werkz" for people with disabilities, blind people, hearing impaired, etc.
>>
>>106961444
"enshittification" is such a crap word that zoomers and cringe millenials throw around at anything they don't like for any reason.
Whenever I see a youtube video with enshittification in the title or thumbnail it is always some basedjak leftist youtuber
boohoo companies want to make money, and cutting costs is a way of doing that. if you are so unhappy, move to another company's product and stop whining.
>>
>>106962835
its more about the lure they do where the service is great at the start and slowly they kill it in a shitty hyper way because it was never profitable
>>
>>106962843
>get nice product for free
>business model not tenable in long run
>have to start monetizing
>complain that you are no longer getting free shit
that level of entitlement is just unbearable
people whining whenever google tries to make youtube in any way profitable is entitled beyond belief. people speak as if google are evil for "making" you watch ads to use their service that is incredibly expensive to run and delivers tons of value to the user
stuff costs money. if you want good stuff you have to pay for it. YT premium is a steal, but people talk about paying for it as being also bad somehow. they dont want to watch ads, they dont want to pay. They just want free stuff.
>>
>>106962926
>YT premium is a steal
yeah, google steals from you and makes you watch some ads even when you pay omegalol
>>
>>106962981
you don't get ads with premium
you also get the skip forward feature that makes it easier for you to skip in-video ads
>>
>>106962994
>you don't get ads with premium
yeah...
>“Promotional ads can sometimes appear for specific partnerships or limited-time offers.”
>>
>>106962994
Wierd. I dont get ads at all with firefox and i get the skip foreward feature too.
Crazy i never even paid for it.
>>
>>106962926
the fault is on google since they switched the platform to being such a mess allowing infinite uploads of trash content for free.
youtube used to have a 10 minute upload limit, and it was probably profitable back then before google bought it out.
now theyve made it so trashy you need to as you say purchase some addon to make it useable.
alphabet is one of the most profitable companies in all of history, they make their money off of parasitism. off of other peoples content and contributions. its the 'ultimate' business. thats why they can afford to give us these free toys in the first place, now they want to fuck them up.
>>
>>106961444
Google Maps suddenly can't find my apartment anymore. It's very weird.
>>
>>106962835
>if you are so unhappy, move to another company's product
Part of the enshittification process is to drive all the other companies who do the same thing out of business so you can't do that.
>>
I'm in the UK for business these days. Last time I was here the Internet was much better, now it slows to a halt if you use a VPN.

I went to visit my parents in Belgium last week, and my dad told me that Apple Maps has gained a mysterious new suburb near where I grew up. It turns out it's the wrong name, and while that place does exist, it's near Overijssel in Holland while we are in Overijse in Belgium. The town is literally in the wrong country on Apple Maps. Someone is going to try and go there and really get very fucking lost.

Unrelated but why isn't Google using their AI bullshit to help Google Maps learn your particular route over time? When I first started college in August, my father and I would take a certain special route so I'd avoid problem spots (even though it'd take longer). When I started driving by myself and still needed Google Maps for school, it never learned my exact special pattern that I used for over 5 times. It'd be really neat.
>>
The rate at which things are getting worse is not at all affected by AI, as much as your pseudointellectual nocode circlejerk cult will have you believe otherwise.
Things had sovl when people made them for fun, things are shit when they are made for money.
Not unique to technology at all either, look at the fucking state of the arts.
>>
>>106962710

It sucks because the original Doctorow blog post and its follow-ups had an interesting point about an economic process by which great customer-centric companies are ruined by self-dealing and advertising. Unfortunately the term was too emotionally evocative and people just started applying it to anything they didn't like. Including "companies charging money for stuff" which if anything is the opposite of enshittification.
The original post: https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/28/enshittification/

or worse, they're the same exact service, they're just resellers.
>>
>>106961444
AI is being pushed everywhere. Search results often now have an AI summary at the top, YouTube videos have an AI summary, AI embedded in your applications and even the OS itself (Windows), most of the new updates for Android and iOS are all AI stuff, AI assistants when you apply for a job, whole devices based on just having AI, and the list goes on. Cheaper and flashier to install these AI systems than actually implement useful functionality.
>>
>>106963406
It absolutely is affected by AI. You don't have to lie just because you wanna make a few bucks off it
>>
>>106961444
Something I try to point out to people is how much consumer standards and expectations have been lowered. Not just in tech, but in general. It used to be if you were a customer, no matter what business, they'd roll out the red carpet for you, providing extra amenities free of charge to try and get and keep your business. But then companies realized they can treat you like shit and you'll still give them your business. Karens get a lot of shit, but something people gloss over is that most of them were alive during the glory days when standards were better. I don't lose my shit in public, but I do have sympathy for Karen's because the world has moved past them, and not to a better place
>>
>>106961444
I don't think the AWS incident is a case of enshittification. Mistakes like this are nothing new.
>>
>>106963516
We can thank the pandemic for this. It taught companies exactly how much they can get away with in terms of min-maxxing their staffing and providing barebones goods/services.

Customer support is a great example of something that was kneecapped by the coof. I've heard "Call volumes are higher than expected" then waited on hold at every single customer support number I have called since 2020. Then you get sent to either Laqueesha or Sanjay, neither of whom can speak English or have the critical thinking power to deviate from the script in front of them when trying to address your problem.
>>
After the whole Crowdstrike bullshit last year the cloud just seems very fragile.

The cart seems to have been put before the horse when it comes to the resilience of the cloud.
>>
>>106962671
that laziness is the core of enshittification
>>
The coming of AI is actually a GOOD thing, though.
>>
>>106964289
To whom exactly?
>>
>>106961444
Before AI
>Let’s invent a clever algorithm to route people from A to B
After AI
>Let’s just run “what’s the fastest way from A to B” through AI because it must be right
>>
>>106962926
>have sufficient capital to operate at a loss
>competition based on sustainable business model can't compete and leaves market
>once you have a monopoly, begin enshittification

Yeah I always wonder that same thing. Especially for the voice nav. Like there are certain parts of the route that are variable. Do I take the interstate or do I go one of 3 back roads to get to work. I want the voice assistant to be smart enough to just get me into those variable points and then shut the fuck up. But no. They'll push another Android update that crash boots my phone every 5 minutes so I'm forced to buy a new one.

Accidentally taking down 1 pod with a bad update happens. Rolling that bad change out to am entire region and fucking your companies reputation to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars in a single day is far more than a simple oversight. It implies there are no guardrails for preventing things like this.
Worse yet it shows that fuck ups are only caught when they burn the entire building down. Just imagine how much jank is under the hood that isn't big enough to cause a global stink and is just mildly inconvenient so they call it a p3 and move on. Now imagine that every team at Amazon has at least a dozen of those. And the iceberg is even bigger for the ones that customers haven't reported yet. It's fucked.

Maybe it did happen due to a lack of proper processes or guardrails, it probably did, and it's probably due to bad practices, but that still doesn't mean it is enshittification or that it's anything new.
Compare it with Google fucking over all of its users by making its services literally worse all the time. They are not the same phenomena.

I noticed earlier today that file explorer tabs don't run in separate processes like how browsers handle it. Pathing to a UNC share is extremely unstable and will just constantly softlock explorer now.

I genuinely cannot think of anything that has gotten honestly better or hasnt been just stacking bloat on top of already solved problems from 15+ years ago
Corpo niggers dont know how much i want to consume product then get excited for next product but they do everything in their power to make sure that i am completely turned off by it.
For my own personal aspie special interest that always seems to make some faggot absolutely seethe is the LED. The led is the single worst seemingly innocuous thing that has ever plagued daily life and should only have been made to be used as indicators in machinery.
>car headlights
fuck you, magdumping into your windshield at night should be considered self defense
>lightbulbs
more chink plastic e-waste made to self destruct in 3 years even though the LED technically lasts for 6 gorillion hours.
>screens
the PC CRT is the peak of display technology in everything but weight and OLED is nothing but cope as it is now despite 20 years of "advancements".
>muh efficiency
we should not be min maxing the joy out of life and it should be considered an act of aggression to do so. With how leds are thrown into everything and how they are used, i would be genuinely surprised if we arent using as much energy, if not more than we were at peak incandescent/hps streetlights/crt.

Terminally online leftist basement dwellers, however, produce nothing. And because they produce nothing they resort to complaining about those that do to make themselves feel better about being failures.
