Redpill me on any modern OS he hasn't touched. Are any of them anywhere near as compatible with modern consumer expectations as something like Mint has become?

I don't think he's contributed code to the Linux kernel itself, so you could just use a Linux distribution that doesn't use GNU software in the userland. Something like Alpine might be a good place to start looking.

Otherwise, the BSDs are probably the closest thing to Linux without being Linux.

Everyone uses gcc. Clang is even worse.
