bro i don't careif 11 gets too annoying i'll just go linux

Installing gentoo would be less stupid. And I'm not suggesting gentoo...
So I found (for real) an old HP Xeon workstation Z400 in a snowbank out by my place last winter (I live in a rural location). It had no hard drive and the side was open. Snow and dirt were inside and outside the machine. I dried it out and cleaned it up as best I could and it's sat for almost 8 months until today and I finally tried it out. Holy shit, it kinda works! It didn't light on fire or start smoking. Thing has no hard drive but I had a small 80 GB one just to test it with. Thing is spitting out complaints about the RAM and the bios battery/time. OK, so I re-seat all the RAM and put in a new Bios battery for the time/settings. It COMPLETELY works! Now for an OS. It began life on Vista as there is a sticker on the case. There is also a Win 7 sticker too. So, I throw Win 7 upgrade DVD in the drive just to see if that works. It DOES! Completely takes the OS just fine. Yay! Free computer! So I decide to nuke that install and put on Win 10 LTSC IoT as everyone on here suggested and from here https://massgrave.dev/windows_ltsc_linksIT FUCKING WORKS! IS ACTIVATED! I'm floored! It's updating all the updates now and has found all the drivers for everything just fine. Zero issues. Even the USB wireless adapter to get the updates! THANK YOU /g/ You are the fucking best hoomans on the planet...lol...well, no you aren't but one of you was to help me out. A LEAF from Canada, you're super leaf to me! I thank thee!I will figure out how to de-telemetrize it later on. But for now, I am stoked!

>>106977689Using Mint as a base OS with virtual box running 7, 10 LTSC IoT and 11 LTSC IoT VMs is where I'd go if I had a powerful enough machine with enough RAM, CPU and hard drive space (or preferably SSD space). That way I'm the fucking boss.

>>106978400Depends on your hardware drivers needed, I use a proprietary Nvidia driver. But nothing stops you from using open source xorg driver
>>106978498isee.does it still use the apt/dpkg package manager? (does it install .deb files from the terminal)or do i need to learn a new system all together?
>>106978400You can download a LiveCD or USB key to try it out if you have that capability (a USB key that's 8 GB or above or a DVD burner still). It won't actually install on your system's drive unless you download that ISO install version. Think: Portable. All the install info is here: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/choose.html
I moved from 8.1 to Linux 2 months go, never even touched win10, but that was just my lazy ass not wanting to do a clean install
>>106978657w10 performs about the same as 8.1, idk what else goes on under the hood, but performance wise, not much different.still, i would practice the same heuristics whenever a new version comes out, which includes the same suspicions towards microsoft -_-

I switched to w7 because I didn't wanted to be chained to the teet of the linux ecosystem any longer. It is incredibly freeing to know that shit will never break in the future. If you are coming from linux as I was, then you make be surprised how much you can tweak and customize w7 as well.
>>106978902>a recovering linux userlol, you never abandon linux, you just use end up using it less

>>106979209Yes.Linux is an "always online" service and is extremely dependent on updates. This is fine for a server but ridiculous for personal desktop use.
>>106978552Yeah it uses dpkg, super simple when everything kept in the repository

>>106979960And that's a good thing.
A friend of mine who games on PC but has zero interest in tinkering recently asked me if SteamOS was something he could put on his computer instead of Windows. This is someone who has never opened a terminal in his life, and he's actively looking into alternatives due to the state of Windows. Normies are getting fed up with Microsoft's shenanigans and Linux becomes more of a viable alternative for every usecase each year. I actually hope Microsoft keeps making these horrible decisions and updates.
>>106980023Normies better start learning the bash, or they're going to get the microsoft clamps... HARD! Mkay buttercup? Good shnookums.
