What happened to toolbars?

I miss them so much
>>
Microshaft decided they would monopolize monetizing user data and block out third parties.
>>
>>106981338
why
>>
>>106981346
What are you ten? They did it for more money.
>>
>>106981076
All those toolbars and not a single button on any one of them is at all useful.
Toolbars were a cool idea but Microsoft was stupid for not realizing that adware shitware jeetsoft (((corporations))) would just use them to shove more ads into people's faces.

>visit my boomer uncle
>discuss something, need to look it up online so he lets me use his laptop
>4-5 layers of toolbars, unironically half of pic related >>106981076
>hey uncle, do you want me to clean that up?
>"no no no, I'm using this to access all my banking and stuff, everything is saved there"
>mfw unc uses these toolbars like the URL bar
Few weeks later I heard someone from New York stole $200 off their account. We live in yuro.

Now to answer - google centralised search then google ads happened then all other tools became apps on smartphones.

The only one I miss is StumbleUpon.
>>
>>106982092
It still exists, kind of. Except it's completely cursed. It only works as an app on mobile and requires login in-browser as well and often leads to social media pages. It wouldn't surprise me if they added crypto, NFTs and AI as well just to really drive home the point that they're shitting on its corpse.
>>
>>106982163
Are you referring to Mix, or Cloudhiker (previously known as stumbled.cc)? I though this last one was not completely terrible.
>>
>>106983742
I was referring to Mix, since stumbleupon.com redirects to it. I didn't remember the other one, but apparently I had it bookmarked already and it seems interesting. Thanks!

I'm not sure if this one counts, but there is one made by a tech YouTuber: https://www.mcstumble.com/

Chads use hotkeys
>>
>>106983863
I did not know of mcstumble. I'm giving it a try later, thanks.

I have fond memories of StumbleUpon letting me find cool sites I would have never found otherwise, but I worry about the enshittification potential of the spiritual successors. If the results are human curated and the stumbling is truly random it can work, but once the owners want to increase the profits, it would mean shit websites paying to appear frequently, or the algorithm deciding what to push based on corporate interests rather than pure randomness.

This except replace microsoft with google.
>>
>>106984241
Yeah, I don't know what the mechanisms behind them are. From what you're describing, McStumble doesn't fit in with the others as afaik it just filters randomly through a preset list of curated sites, there's no way to add new sites except if the dev manually adds them.
>>
>>106981076
no one who had them misses them.
the only toolbar which was acceptable was the google toolbar but thats because google was "le not evil" back then.

you basically got them as soon as you installed some adware, they automatically bundled at least one toolbar.

I used to have a dream every now and then about having accidentally installed a virus and trying to get rid of the toolbars and popups and whatnot
>>
>>106982092
Holy shit. I remember StumbleUpon. Was absolutely based back in the day.
>>
They rarely served any purpose and the ones who did, basically just evolved into extensions.
>>
>>106981076
Accidentally installing Yahoo toolbar for the 500th time because some faggot put it in their installer for money.

>What happened to toolbars?
