You don't really need "NAS"
>>
I have 5 TVs, 16 security cameras and 23 desktops/laptops/phones in my home that constantly access media. How is a centralized nas not the perfect solution for my problem?
>>

>23 desktops/laptops/phones in my home that constantly access media
??????!!?
>>
what advantage does a prebuilt NAS give over just repurposing and old computer for the role?
I thought these vendors all have a slightly antagonistic relationship with their users, with one even trying to make locked down harddrives
>>
>>106982743
usually decent amount of hot swappable bays and lower idle power consumption than repurposing an old power guzzler is my guess
>>
>>106982743
Convenience, size and power consumption. A prebuilt NAS being plug and play while not taking up too much power and space in the house is a big plus.
>>
>>106982784
they last longer too
it's not uncommon to see 15 year old Zyxels in the wild with their original drives still working perfectly like day one, my local library has a few
>>
>>106982784
The Elitedesk G4 I use pulls ~8-9W from the wall at idle. Even at Jewropean energy prices it'd be a long, long time before a dedicated NAS would pay for itself. Hard drive power consumption on top of that when spun up is the same between the two anyway. It's also nice to have the grunt of an i5-8500 available if needed, since I run a bunch of other stuff on there via Docker and VMs.
>>
>>106982557
"yes" i "do".
i built my own
>>
>>106982616
It's a solution, but OP is correct - you don't need it. You don't need any of that stuff.
>>
>>106982557
You're right, you need a computer with easily serviceable and replaceable parts.
>>
>>106982853
Fair point, I think most people might think of repurposing an old computer as an old build they had which may have been a larger computer.
>>
>>106982853
calm down Rajeesh, it's about form too not just function. I got my nas hooked up to my mac mini all looking tidy and slick. no i wont use some poorfag shitbox that i have to take apart every time when swapping drives and listen to crackling fan noises and worry about motherboard sensors (google "elitedesk fan noise temp")
i'll upgrade my nas around 2030, until then i often forget it's there.
some people own a nice place and have the wallet for a nice easy on the eyes convenient solution, other people dumpster dive and try to convince others poverty is cool.
that's life i guess, no need to get angry.
>>
>>106982936
Even then an old computer is pretty modern in terms of power savings.
We are way past the point where PCs run at max speed all the time and take 150w doing nothing.
A full ATX system made in the last decade will be 30w at most without a GPU

>>
>>106982743
Just werks. Pretty much the textbook definition of convenience tax. Plus power consumption, but unless you use like a 12900k or something like that in your custom built NAS it shouldn't be a huge difference.
>>
>>106983104
>Bro just use Google storage bro
The only problem with a NAS is that it's not a backup solution. I'm still trying to figure that out. Right now I just buy a 20 TB HDD every once in a while to backup all my shit but that's going to start becoming a problem fast.
>>
>>106983115
Even a 12900k can idle at a handful of watts
Large desktop idle inefficiency is purely down to PSU and motherboards which aren't optimized at all for idle efficiency
>>
>>106982956
Try googling "cool PC cases" or something. Prebuilt NAS does not have a monopoly on sleek metal/plastic boxes.
>>
>>106982557
I have more than 1 screen and a power bill. I like NAS.

Because most shitty old computers have like three SATA ports if you're lucky.
>>
>>106982557
>You don't really need "NAS"
That's actually true, using old computer parts with unraid or a similar OS will make it do a fuckton more and you will actually learn how to manage systems and shit, plus, since it's not bound to the maker's OS, you get lifetime updates at no extra cost and you can upgrade it too.
>>

PCI SATA expansion cards are incredibly cheap

I dont know why people bother building nas boxes. i have an always on machine with a 32TB RAID0 running off a $15 RAID card that has over 75,000 hours of uptime.
I cant imagine retards spending over $300 for an overpriced computer case that can only hold 4 drives, and then waste half their storage on redundancy.
>>
>>106983568
If anything it's in the last few years SATA ports have started becoming more and more rare.
And if you have them, they may share PCIE lanes with M.2 slots.
>>
>>106982557
You also don't need the internet, a computer or even electricity. What's your point?
>>
>>106983568
What bottom of the barrel $3 motherboards are you looking at? I don't think I've literally ever seen one with less than 4 and usually it's 6 or 8, plus you can buy pcie sata expanders or even better used hbas for peanuts to give you literally all the ports you would ever need
>>
>>106983772
What case is that.

I don't hear any part of my home server setup because it's in a spare room. An actual whole room that has no other use but to play host to my setup. In my house. I know, right? It's like I'm Elon Musk or something in relative terms. If I was living in a one-room tin shack in Bangalore then I guess I might be sensitive to noise, so I understand your plight.

nta, but each person having at least 1 pc 1 laptop and 1 phone makes that not as wild as it sounds.
i mean i have more than 1 phone and laptop already so i would take up a chunk of that number alone.

Online backup is a good option if you don't have too much (critical) data.
I use "Hyper Backup" with my Synology which encrypts the data locally before uploading it to a storage service of your choice (I use both Google Drive and Synology's own "C2" storage, but there are many options)

That's just for personal documents and photos and such though, a few hundred GB in total.
Movies and series I've torrented (several TB) I only backed up locally to some old disks.
But I can live with losing those if, say, my house burned down.
And I only make backups once a year or so since I'll probably still be able to re-torrent them anyways.

Considering the fickle nature of online media in this day and age, maybe you do.
>>
>>106985766
This case might be in my future.
>>106985772
I don't necessarily like online backups or use them. I just am aware of the challenges one might face with doing it all yourself, possible hurdles, etc. That encryption of data before uploading is nice, means that those assholes don't have to know what content you're uploading. Though paying for backup with them is still a pain in the ass vs the "free" from your own servers.
>>
>>106983158
>>106985772
Another option I forgot to mention is to get two NAS'es.
I think many people who have upgraded they NAS once keep their old NAS for backups.
Or if you have a friend or family member with a NAS you could become backup buddies.
>>
>>106983325
>>106983356

Huh? I have a family. a spouse and four kids.
Why is this such an alien concept on /g/...
>>
>>106985822
>paying for backup with them is still a pain in the ass vs the "free" from your own servers.
True but online storage has become pretty cheap.
My Google Drive I already needed for something else so it was essentially free for me.
>>
>>106982887
I need a server that stores video recordings and my family likes watching movies and TV shows. I get a huge insurance discount for having the cameras. Would you prefer me pay for a half dozen streaming services per month?
>>
>>106985890
One or two security cameras is normal.
16 means you're a drug dealer.
>>
>>106985970
I'm sitting on two acres of land with a house, guest house, workshop, garage and tool shed and no perimeter fence. Two cameras won't even cover my driveway

NAS is all fun and games until the hard drives start dying and that $120 replacement drive doesn’t look as friendly
