Anytime you use an OS from a smaller group you are kind of taking a risk for this very reason. But this has literally nothing to do with the rest of the linux ecosystem. It is 1 single website for a single distro. The whole point of having things be compartmentalized and decentralized is that when something like this happens it doesnt effect everything else. The only thing that would effect everything else would be if the linux kernel itself had malware, which is extremely unlikely given that so many people are working on it and its open source. It would be extremely hard to hide malware in it.
