why are linuxfags so proud of installing "apps" like a fucking phone
>>
>>106994459
it's not about moving binaries around, it's about not littering the system. also privacy. also separating workflows. currently you can't run multiple instances of separate firefoxes on linux. on windows I can run basically any number of portable firefoxes each with their own settings, bookmarks, add ons etc and they don't even know about each other.

I just like to change the appearance of my windows to make then look like MacOS9.
Can't do that on Windows, can't do that on OSX, simple as.

Of course you can (via Flatpak, Snap, or simply launching with a separate profile).

You will never, ever, ever come remotely close to the level of isolation, security, and compartmentalization I get on QubesOS
>>

>I don't need performance
>>
>>106994838
It performs great since I'm not a RAMlet. If you need real security, isolation and compartmentalization then you're an absolute retard for using Windows over Qubes. I even have an AppVM running Windows 11 so that means I can literally do everything you can do with your operating system plus more

PortableApps is an open source project you dumb fuck. Most of the portable Packages on portableapps.com are also open source.

Appimages suck ass.
https://ludditus.com/2024/10/31/appimage

At the moment, software packaging sucks on loonix. Even Linus Torvalds himself said that Software packaging sucks on desktop Linux but shills are always ignorant of the fundamental flaws of their trrany loonix distro.

That's not an installer. It's a compressed file. You can decompress it using something else like 7-Zip

KYS retard. Appimage, Flatpak, and Snap were only just beginning to gain traction then, and really picked up steam after his remarks.

>ludditus dot com
Guy clearly promotes Flatpak and Snap as the better choices, and points out that Windows has its own portability issues.
>>
nothing stopping you from making a distro thats fully static compiled leaving copies of libraries next to the program and having an env that loads those before trying /lib
>>
>>106994317
And they are rubbish. On Windows, you unpack a folder to your directory of choice, and you're done. If the program writes to documents, appdata, or whatever then that's the developers fault.
>>

>August 2014
Linux hasn't changed much since 2014. Every comment that Linus made in that video is still relevant in 2025.
>Appimage, Flatpak, and Snap
All of these are garbage. I don't use any of them on my Linux installation.

How comes I can just unpack Blender, a COMPLETE 3D suite, into some folder in Linux, click the executable and it literally just werks?
Why can't other programs not be like this? What are they doing differently? It's a gigantic complex program and yet doesn't require an "install"

Plenty of Linux software also allows you to do that. It's just that most people prefer other options.
>>
>>106995539
It's a mystery, because they finally made it fully portable on Windows with version 4.2 and removing the writes to the appdata folder entirely.
