imo youre on the right track to figure out why big tech was on board with it. even after layoffs, big tech has had a shit ton of extra h1b workers lying around. so when they agreed with trump to stop new h1bs from coming in, it hurts any up and coming competition much more than it hurts established big tech. so now only big tech that has access to the cheap labor cheat code

now this plan hinges highly on h1bs actually being useful. imo they kinda lost the plot along the way, because the primary motivation to hire h1bs has been to artificially boost the company headcount while keeping costs low, and to have access to modern day indentured servants / slaves. i personally believe that when once you reach a certain level of out of touch & rich, you become intensely attracted to the prospect of having slaves, even if it isn't actually something that makes sense in the long run
