If you could choose only one distribution to be titled 'the most superior Linux distribution,' what would you choose?(Yes, I understand there is no such thing as a superior distro, and it all varies.)

>>106997781Mint (xfce) of course. Although it's a distro based on a distro that is itself based on a distro, it feels less messed up, less failed, less stupid, better overall, than what it is based on.
>>106997781From today you'll use screwdrivers as folks and spoons as knivesRetard.
>>106997797Great choice.

>>106997954pufferfish wit da big ass lip
>>106997798cuck license
>>106997781There's only two choices with considering. My preference is the Fedora ecosystem, so Fedora KDE is it.If you prefer the Arch ecosystem, you use CachyOS with KDE.
>>106997781Guix
>>106997781macOS mojave
>>106997781Arch Linux is the best desktop Linux bar none.
>>106998004You are that one guy with roman numerals in the desktop thread (the one and only one guy using guix kek).>>106998122Obviously Arch Linux is the only correct answer.
>>106997781i guess arch or nix, i've never actually used nix but people make it sound like reproducible and unbreakable arch, which sounds really solid if true
Secureblue. The only Linux "distro" that is making an effort to be more secure. All the other distros are so far behind MacOS and Windows as far as security goes. Linux in general is more privacy-respecting yes, but extremely vulnerable.
Gentoo
>>106997983Ok but who cares? I accept terms and conditions and codes of conduct, but I do not follow them. I do whatever the fuck I want and they can suck my CoC.
>>106997781Assuming you are talking about personal computer, then Arch obviously. It strikes a good balance of control and convenience. If you know what you are doing it just werks and can do a lot.
I use Debian btw
>>106997874i too was going to say xfce mint since i feel like cinnamon is too restrictive but for it being a derivative of a derivative is pretty good
Debian for low effort "just werks" servers/headless machines.Gentoo for desktops if you know what you want.If you just want something that is modern and works on desktops with no effort, honestly no idea which DE I could recommend. GNOME2 is long dead and KDE, while good with a custom config, has bullshit like kwallet that often doesn't work ootb and gets in the way. Anything using GTK3 or GTK4 is fucking useless and LXqt is too minimal for a normal user.
archbut most of the big ones are fine
>>106997781i think gentoo is the best install instructions are actually clear unlike the arch wiki
>>106997781>a superior distroit's called nixos
>>106998652nixos is on the opposite end of the spectrum from arch. with arch you explicitly configure everything, with nix you rely on a massive stack of predefined configurations you'd have to override individually. but both handle repositories equally poorly, kek.
>>106999205I had some issues with the UEFI/boot partition section some days ago. If I mount the ESP at /efi the installkernel package still copies the kernel an grub to a /boot folder
Arch
Notice how anyone who recommends Arch does not state why, because they just fell for a meme.
>>106999448arch is not too bad for learning. they're just intermediate
>>106999452Their wiki contains a lot of stuff but it is poor at explaining what the listed commands actually do. It's good to find obscure fixes but not great for learning concepts
>>106999484i agree, but in most cases there's nothing out there that really explains these things to the layman, so providing a fix to a niche problem is probably better than leaving them in the dark. the actual learning happens during use anyway, trying to to understand things or do something that's not explicitly documented somewhere. LLMs and friends who know better than you are a sometimes useful source, but there's no magic pill that teaches you technical literacy.
>>106999448I'm gonna say Arch because I love pacman and the AUR and find it them a thousand times more usable than whatever the fuck ubuntu is trying to do.
>>106999527AUR is just a worse version of Gentoo
>>106997781Windows 11 Pro, using linux through WSL, and then one of the major upstream distros.
>>106999540I wouldn't know, I've never tried Gentoo
>>106997781Arch, Debian, Gentoo, maybe Void.
>>106999484>>106999515to a large degree what arch makes you do is repeat and manually perform configuration that if you know how to do it and why you're doing it is a massive waste of time, and that's why im saying it's good for learning. doing these things teaches you how to manually solve already solved problems, which is sometimes necessary to do just to understand something.
Anything that forces you to manually do what other distros would automate for you. This is useful because it lets you spend more of your time that has no value and then you can wank off about it on a Chinese basket weaving forum.
>>106997781if your only goal is performance you need a distro where you can compile everything for less memory usage through either less features or certain optimizations.basically, get a source based distro which makes it easy to compile everything and customize (like gentoo) to get speed. everything other distro is basically pre-packaged stuff and will always carry a speed/compatibility compromise.
>>106999635if you're trying to do any of these things professionally learning the underlying concepts is extremely valuable and arguably crucial. if you just wanna send emails, browse the web and do modeling in blender then ofc don't use arch, lmao
>>106997781My first instinct is Debianand I have never even used it (outside of servers)
>>106999684Except you'd be configuring very different things if you wanted to do it professionally. You won't get paid to rice a desktop, but you can get paid to set up servers properly. Which is a lot of manual stuff even on distros like Debian.
>>106998676>secureblueUnironically what's the use case? Why wouldn't you just use an atomic fedora flavor?
>>106997781Realistically, Mint. With Ubuntu as the testing ground.
>>106999741doesn't matter, you learn better doing something you care about, and this inevitably forces you to learn concepts relevant to actual work>Which is a lot of manual stuff even on distros like Debian.yeah, if you're doing it wrong. this isn't 2005 and your and idiot if you're editing config files on a server by hand for anything but testing or investigation of an issue
>>106999755>and your and idiotbruhBut I get what you mean, a lot can be automated, but you have to write those scripts too yourself
>>106999771>>and your and idiotyou don't have to. that's the point of understanding something and moving on to solutions that automate the tedious busywork for you while still remaining capable of debugging and understanding what said solutions are doing when the need arises
>>106999786Yeah but i won't write Ansible scripts to set up a single server in a specific way. It would take longer than just doing it manually.
>>106999805sure, but in professional environments you're probably not managing one server, you're managing 100s of apps running on 100s of servers, and by doing everything manually (the arch way, but on debian because servers) you're destined to end up with a team of 20 doing what one guy using more modern tools could do.
>>106997781Mint XFCE, it's easy enough for retards to use it and it's modern in a good way.
>>106997781ubuntu has to be the best all rounderi say this as a dude with some form of debian installed on all his systems
you're all installing gentoo RIGHT FUCKING NOW
>>106999742It IS just an atomic fedora flavor but with additional hardening. Usecase is just Desktop Grapheneos
