I'm looking for new external storage over USB. I've been looking through prebuilt external SSDs and turns out most of them are either cheap trash with reject NAND, garbage controllers and overheating cases or just overpriced.

In comparison an SSD enclosure lets me chose any quality NVMe SSD by myself and put it in a box.
But there are several problems with this approach:
1. I don't know which controllers most of these enclosures use. They could be cheap garbage as well.
2. NVMe SSDs are not made to be powered over USB wattage. What if they have an amp spike, but the USB connection can not provide it? Will my data gets killed?

Reliability and data safety is more important for me than pure speed. I hope some Anons have some knowledge on this topic and can help me out.

tldr: Are there good and reliable SSD enclosures on the market? Or are prebuilt SSDs the better option?

Oh it's this one
>Sabrent EC-SNVE USB 3.2 Type-C Tool-Free Enclosure for M.2 PCIe NVMe and SATA SSDs

What chipset does it use?
That other enclosure is definitely too expensive for me.

seems to use RTL9210B

Doesn't make a difference. Anything is better than a spinny hard drive, even a regular flash drive

Enclosures all the day.
An external SSD is a single entity, if it fails, it fails.
If the converter in the enclosure fails, your data is still fine.

Is that one of the good or bad ones? I've also seen JMicro and Asmedia chipsets

>>107002163
do you fags realize SSD must be powered at least once per couple of years or it will start to lose data? External SSD means it will be stored somewhere and you will forget to use it

same thing happened to me Samsung Sata SSD, i booted the PC up after 8years of not using it and OS was so corrupted it did not booted

I need one because I need to use it

Just get an SSD

the samsung is the better choice. i've been impressed with it.

just like almost all of these NVME enclosures, they don't provide adequate cooling. including this sabrent one, which I own.
