I’ve never used Solaris; I’ve always used either Linux or BSD. Do you guys recommend I try Solaris, or is it even worth trying?

Does it run on a Sparcstation? If not, it's not real Solaris.

Spent a few years on it at work as a daily driver from 1999 to 2003. Filesystem layout is slightly different only insofar as the same UNIX paths but with different usage, for example where I worked the dir /opt was an installation root, but that could have been a shared mount point onbe ery single Sun machine in the company (about 50 Sun machines).

This led to some humourous moments, like an idiot project lead being given root access then fucking up one day by accidentally "rm -rf /opt/*". The entire company ground to a halt because the Sun machines were the main workhorse for everyone there as the backbone of the company, and all of them shopped working all at once. The sysadmins were fucking pissed kek.

The Sun machines we had were kitted out with these high quality 21 inch CRTs pic related

Most of us were using Ultra 10's

use ILLUMOS
>>
>>107003656
imagine giving root to anyone besides the main sysadmin lol, it was a ticking bomb

Yeah. It was a real fucking circus. I think it was more the result of politics and out of the hands of the sysadmins. Charismatic researcher project heads can easily fool CEOs into granting the most stupid shit. Sysadmins knew it would eventually happen given how fucking cowboy researchers actually are.

I have never seen sysadmins more pissed than after this shitfest.

Are they still publishing it or have they just switched to linux?
>>
>>107004988
it's on life support. Oracle has like 1 maintainer for it and no new versions are planned. but, as Oracle will tell you, no point in killing something when it still makes you money.
>>
>>107005798
I wonder whether Solaris or AIX will be the next unix to be straight-up discontinued.
>>
>>107004988
it's got guaranteed support until 2034 at least
>>
>>107006039
Ah, AIX. Spent some time. Wasn't too bad. At least it wasn't HP-UX.
