The one that isn't Seagate.

Platter drives are a relic that will disappear because of rare earth magnets, but Western Digital all day every day. Seagate is complete trash.

The one with the furry on it because when the platter spins up it makes an "awooo" sound.

None of them are made in the US.

Enjoy your write durability of approximately 10 (could be lower). RW DVDs are more durable.

Looks like a cap exploded in your case.
Not “silver disease”

IBM -> Hitachi HGST -> WD
They practically invented them.

Seagate was always on the same tier as miniscribe. Retail mid-grade slop.

Toshiba? Mysterious like the romulans.

i just bought a seagate drive for a home cloud server, whats wrong with seagate? bought it to replace my last seagate which has lasted 20 years so far and im just thinking it could die any second now, but it hasnt done anything weird at all yet...
>>
>>107005626
I'vn had no issues with either, I'd go with whichever's cheaper and imo it's good to have a mix anyway, prevents a factory flaw from wiping out everything.

No

nothing is wrong with seagate. i've had more WD drives die than seagate.

IronWolf Pro because Red Plus is 2nd gen SMR shit. If the consumer drive doesn't end in Pro, it's crap. Goes for all brands.

WD Purples up to 10TB are also SMR. Yes, there's a reason why they ever introduced Pro versions in the first place (server drives with different sticker colors/animal names the rest is SMR garbage to reduce costs), this should become a common knowledge at this point. Here are the pics of data distortion detection tests of old Red EFRX and the new "CMR" Blue EZAX (same Venice drive family as Red Plus EFPX or Purple PURZ) and the newer model performs much much worse.

There are no more consumer grade or even nas/raid grade CMR drives, the enterprise level is the bare minimum to find a guaranteed CMR drive (although even there there are some doubts because some wd golds have 2tb/platter density), also sata format is dying fast, they will eventually stop producing sata devices and focus on nvme, unless you move to sas you're out of options.

Oh and those miners along with the AI boom will dry up the supply pretty fast. Hard drive manufacturing is dead at this point. I pretty much wish death to WD and Seagate for turning such magnificent tech into unreliable buggy garbage not to mention that they killed high quality manufacturers such as HGST and Samsung.

You shouldn't go by brands in a broad spectrum way. You should go by specific models of drive.
Do they have helium? Are they CMR? Those are two major ones.
The IronWolf Pro in your picture has both, and the WD Red probably has CMR but not helium because it's only 4TB. They make a lot of different "Red" models so you have to check the model number specifically.
Loads of WD stuff is just rebranded HGST stuff too, so there's another spanner in the works for brand loyalty. Even more is that the drives are usually the same hardware with different firmware to target different use cases.

neither are they made in china

I have that 16tb Ironwolf and it's LOUD af. I wish they made high capacity quiet 5400rpm drives.

I have four of those exact Seagate drives in my case right now, everything's still working fine so far!
