I'm looking for new external storage over USB. I've been looking through prebuilt external SSDs and turns out most of them are either cheap trash with reject NAND, garbage controllers and overheating cases or just overpriced. In comparison an SSD enclosure lets me chose any quality NVMe SSD by myself and put it in a box.But there are several problems with this approach:1. I don't know which controllers most of these enclosures use. They could be cheap garbage as well.2. NVMe SSDs are not made to be powered over USB wattage. What if they have an amp spike, but the USB connection can not provide it? Will my data gets killed?Reliability and data safety is more important for me than pure speed. I hope some Anons have some knowledge on this topic and can help me out.tldr: Are there good and reliable SSD enclosures on the market? Or are prebuilt SSDs the better option?
Just get a Samsung 2.5" SSD and any SATA to USB 3.0 cable. You don't need an enclosure since SATA doesn't run as hot and most of the 2.5" case is empty. Those M.2 enclosures are for NVME drives that are fast but run hot as shit and primarily used by photographers that need to transfer large files.

>>107009520>external NVMeSeems kind of useless. You're not going to be able to take full advantage of its speed over USB. You could get a SATA SSD of the same capacity for cheaper. Choosing NVMe over SATA makes sense in most cases, but I'm not sure there would be an advantage in this case, since you're running over USB.
>>107009586>>107009638Just looked it up. It's a nice idea but SATA SSDs aren't even cheaper than NVMe SSDs. They probably use cheaper NAND as well.
I'd say 2.5 ssd with sata to usb 3.0 adaptorwhat you lose in Transfer speed you gain in worry-free over heating issue over nvme
>>107009730>what you lose in Transfer speed you gain in worry-free over heating issue over nvmeA thermal throttling NVMe is still faster than a SATA SSD
If you're using external nvme, be sure to get a USB dock that its hooked up to, because you need a stable external power source. Plugging it directly to laptop or PC USB port might not give you enough power, and might shut itself down or give you slower speeds.
>>107009738That's exactly something I do NOT want to do. I need to connect it to smartphones and tablets too from time to time.
>>107009808Get a USB dock

>>107010075buy extra nvme pads

I'd say get an ORICO USB4 (AKA Thunderbolt) NVMe enclosure for $20 off AliExpress and a Samsung 990 EVO Plus. 1TB of fast reliable portable storage for $100. I'm not sure how well the phone/tablet will negotiate with the enclosure down to USB2/3 though.
I will probably buy this one with an 2TB PCIe3.0 SSD.Any objections?
