My unpopular /g/ opinion is that not everything needs to be super high quality, lossless, maxed out settings, 4K 60FPS, etc.

720p is a perfectly fine resolution for gaming
Nearly every video ever made is watchable at 480p
Music can be incredibly low bitrate and still sound nearly the same
JPG is always better than PNG

Most people have a really hard time understanding the difference between storage and bandwidth. In their bubble they assume that because they purchased a top-of-the-line 1TB storage 5G 1440p resolution phone with unlimited data that everyone should be sharing 100-200 MB media files because to them that's a drop in the bucket. They can't wrap their head around the fact that if say 1 million people decided to download those 100-200 MB media files that it would use up Terabytes of bandwidth, which is like hella expensive to websites.

Anyway we can keep costs low and improve image/video quality with things like Webp and AV1. Subjectively speaking many people agree that Webp artifacts (ie turning things into melted butter) is more pleasant than JPG artefacts (ie blockiness and mosquito noise).

720p is fine when the bitrate is high. unfortunately birate got raped over the years everywhere. even 720p on youtube is no longer "HD". it starts at 1080p because thats when the bitrate is good enough.

The more you care about it, the higher quality you want it to be. If I have to download some movie sloppa to watch with my family a 720p rip is more than enough, if I'm listening to music in my car a mp3 is fine, if I'm downloading waifu pictures I want them 40000 pixels big in lossless format.
Someone else who's a big capeshit fan would want the sloppa in 8k and not care about the 480p anime, an audiophile would want to hear the singer's fart recordings in lossless .flacs and so on.
