I did.
Couple months ago.
Got fed up by microsoft.
Guess.
Fedora KDE.
It's my side laptop which I only use for browsing and office stuff. Si I just need a browser and some office suite, OnlyOffice seems to work amazingly ime.
I don't like the absurd amounts of fragmentation. Or that my hardware works flawlessly on one distro and doesn't on another. Ended up on Fedora exactly because it's the only distro where all my hardware works flawlessly and has the least amount of bugs. I really wanted to use Mint or Arch for my daily driving.
On the bright side, Linux is a breath of fresh air. Not having to depend on big tech corpo bs os really freeing. I'm sure if more people started using it then its problems would start to get fixed more quickly. Perhaps one day, soon.

Back in March / April
>>Why?
I bought an Asus ally x and I installed bazzite for steam os game mode
>>Previous OS?
Windows but I still use it.
>>Current distro?
CachyOS on laptop, Bazzite on my ally x.
>>Usecase?
Ally x is largely gaming. I like the steam os game mode and think it's one of the best user experiences on a handheld out there right now. Once bog picture mode can be used as the launcher for Windows full screen experience, I'll probably switch back. I'll still keep Cachyos on my desktop . For the desktop it's just general computer and browsing. Basically a stand in for windows. Only reason I won't go full Linux is because of work needs with Microsoft teams. I wish Microsoft would just release teams like they did with edge on some repo somewhere.
>>What annoys you or doesn't work?
Secure boot, LUKs auto unlocking , and setting up bootloaders. I fucking hate grub and think it looks like ass. I have no idea why every distro insists on that ugly ass bootloader when refind provides a beautiful setup and easy to theme setup. I'd be less pissed at grub if the distro shippers actually grub with some basic theme instead of the ugly console mode they do.
I also hate that certain things are jenky on unsupported hardware but thats largely the fault of hardware vendors being níggers and not doing it themselves/ the community doing it for them. Nvidia can suck my asshole.
>>What works great or is impressive?
If you buy the right hardware (and everything) Linux works so well out of the box and you won't really have to deal with anything. I think AI LLMs are lame and gay but they've largely been a great help in answering my questions. Enough that I can say I'm an intermediate terminal user now after 6ish months from not using Linux since the mid 2000s when package managers were still in their infancy. Linux was awful then.
Bazzite is a very well polished and excellent distro for new Linux users.

I dont want anything to do with Microsoft ever again. They are one of the most anti consumer companies in existence and Windows seems now only to exist to siphon data from its users to be sold and traded by MS. On Fedora, my laptop used to crash on sleep, though Mint handles it way better. Only problem I have on Mint is setting up whipper to rip CDs to flac. It was way easier on Fedora. Some anon told me to use Exact Audio Copy with wine but I’m not sure if I want to set up wine for just that.

Nvidia driver, the kernel USB BT drivers, KDE Plasma had a bunch of bugs (I think a lot are fixed now), pipewire seems to have some issues. There's tons of random crap that isn't quite right, you could stay here for days listing it. Also you can do global shortcuts on wayland with KDE for OBS, but it requires going through the websocket thing as far as I remember, since OBS itself doesn't support KDE keybinds.

Windows has stuff like that too, but on Windows it tends to be much harder to encounter all the bugs.

>Previous OS?
Win7 with a lot of patches
>Current distro?
Kubuntu 24.04 LTS
>Usecase?
I'm developer and head honcho of a big webgame. I don't actually ask that much from my OS, I just need a simple but good editor, and some way to get the visual design (and audio design) tools I need. Despite being gamedev I don't game a ton, and when I do it's not often on PC.
>What annoys you or doesn't work?
I don't reboot habitually, only for occasional updates and if I need to really clear my mind. KWin is the main culprit of breakage, after a day of use it will simply stop rendering windows. I made a keybind for restarting KWin though which works well.
Beyond that, at 30+ day uptimes I get popping in Pipewire which also needs a restart then. The biggest actual annoyance isn't anything specific, it's moreso when things refuse to want to work together so you have to pick a lesser evil (snap vs appimage vs native vs flatpak is one example...).
Also VMWare recently suddenly started doing a thing where using any VM will unbind the modifier keys in the host until you replug or setxkbmap
>What works great or is impressive?
Having tried the Linux desktop a good amount of times a decade or more ago (but never seriously), I honestly expected much much more jank, but in reality using it is a lot smoother than even my existing Win7 install I was used to. That on top of having certain incredibly useful features, like SFTP mounting that just works (fuck you fuck you fuck you cyberduck), etc.
There's also just some Windows things you didn't realize were idiotic until they're gone, like "can't open this file as another program has it open", or "scroll a bit too hard and it starts beeping"

Copy/pasting between different domains requires an extra step, the app/template separation can be kind of unintuitive, etc. It's really an OS best suited towards people with intermediate/advance cybersecurity knowledge
>What works great or is impressive?
Complete and total control over the entire system, ability to easily and simply chain proxies/VPNs together, seamless sandboxing of USB/networking hardware allowing it to do its thing without giving it the ability to compromise the host OS, the way it minimizes overhead while allowing you to run many VMs/isolated work contexts. It's basically the ideal, perfect operating system for the paranoid/security minded user

sucks. are you using proton experimental/ge for new games? And if you are using AMD, that could also be because of the MESA GPU driver, since Mint is more conservative, the mesa stack could be slightly outdated and missing new bug fixes for games, if so... you could try to use Flatpaks, they come with their own Mesa runtime, thats usually up2date. Anyways you need to give permissions to Bottles via Flatseal or via command line but Flatseal is probably easier to work with.
Gaming on linux is still trash and unreliable. Just wait until you face a game what doesn't want to go fullscreen and when it does, alt tabbing will crash it. And then wonder why gamemode doesn't work etc etc. Cool times, so much fun to be had.

Alright anons, here's the summary of the thread for anyone just jumping in.

Why everyone is switching:
> Windows 10 EOL is coming.
> Fed up with Windows 11 telemetry, ads, and general M$ bullshit.

Most common distros being used:
> Fedora KDE, Linux Mint, and Debian seem to be the most popular for new users.
> Plenty of anons jumping straight into Arch-based distros too.

The Bad Parts (Biggest Gripes)
> Gaming: This is the big one. Kernel-level anti-cheat (Valorant, Battlefield, etc.) is a hard NO. If you play these, you have to dual-boot. End of story.
> NVIDIA: Still a pain point. Expect more bugs and jank compared to AMD, which is generally a smoother experience out of the box.
> Random Jank: Stuff can be inconsistent. Hardware that works perfectly on one distro might be broken on another. Wine/Bottles/Lutris can be a hassle compared to just clicking an .exe.
> Initial Setup: Bootloaders (GRUB), Secure Boot, and filesystem stuff can be annoying hurdles for a first-timer.

The Good Parts (What's Impressive)
> Freedom: Your PC is yours again. No forced updates, no spying, no bullshit.
> Performance: The desktop feels faster, and many report better/smoother framerates in games that do work.
> Package Managers: A revelation for Windows users. Installing and updating all your software with one command is incredibly comfy.
> Proton: It's basically magic. A huge chunk of the Steam library works flawlessly with zero effort.

Quick Advice for Newfags
> Just Pick One: Don't agonize over distros. Try Linux Mint for a stable, Windows-like feel or Fedora KDE for a more modern setup.
> Gaming: Check ProtonDB for game compatibility. For non-Steam games, ProtonUp-Qt can make managing Wine versions easier.
> Software: Use your distro's software center first. If an app isn't there, Flatpak is your next best bet.
> It's not Windows: You'll have to learn some new things. The Arch Wiki is a great resource even if you don't use Arch.

I keep forgetting people who are new don't know this. A distro is more like a social club than a technical thing. You pick the distro with the people who have attitudes you like and let them set your computer up for you.

I've only tried Zorin before. It was actually quite problematic on my laptop. Had some mayor issues with the Wi-Fi chipset just not working at all, and when I managed a fix, it kept disconnecting randomly from the network. I even emailed their team, to which they gave me a fix I already tried. It seemed to be ok after some clean OS reinstall I did. The main reason I switched at the end was GNOME, though, and it was being updated too slowly for Zorin. Also, I kinda got caught up in the placebo train I guess.

a few, Directory Opus and Everything Search come to mind right away. Everything else, I've found a satisfying alternative on Linux (and I haven't really tried out most of what outs there). Was using librewolf on windows, have that here. Thunderbird too. Most other software also have a linux version as well. For image viewer I am using qimgv which is okay but I'll see if there something better (want something like Jpegview) and Haruna as my video player which feels mpv.net-like.

I tried GNOME but that felt too tablet-y so I installed KDE instead and it werks, haven't really bothered customizing it though. Considered Arch just for "the fun", but its probably not a good idea as an actual os since I'm not that experienced, but I might vm it just for tinkering fun and learning at some point.

well you better have figured out backups before you even think about it cause there's at least a 50% chance of your entire OS imploding if you do this

I really enjoy the actual OS, Dolphin is great, not having ads and shovelware is great, but sweet fuck so many simple tasks are a total ballache on linux. Some of it is my familiarity with windows but good fucking lord something as simple as undervolting a gpu is a huge ordeal. Win 10? Install Afterburner, scan, set breakpoint and you're done.
It's also by far the most error prone when updating - or maybe Winblows is worse but you upgrade once a decade, while Linux you do so once a year or so.

Great facebook machines but that's about it.

Everything I need works right now. But it wasn't the case a decade ago when I first started using Linux
>only 30% of my games were supported in 2015-2018, compared to 100% today in 2025
>installing software was complete ass until Flatpaks and Appimages became popular and solved the dependency hell issue inherent to regular package managers
>updating the OS was a frustrating chore usually causing me to give up and just do a clean install every year or two. immutable distros like Silverblue completely solved this issue for me
>all desktop environments felt clunky until the 2020-2022 releases of KDE Plasma
So yea, in the current year Linux is pretty much perfect for me and everything really just works.

>What works great or is impressive?
- Both KDE and GNOME are infinitely better than Windows UI. Not just visually, but the overall usage.
- Updates actually work. They're perfect in immutable distros, but still better than Windows in non-immutable distros.
- Installing software is much more convenient and better.
- Using the OS doesn't feel like a chore. I never felt the need to "debloat" it or "install an anti-virus". Aside from needing a handful of GNOME extensions when using GNOME, I never had to install 3rd party software to unfuck the usability of the OS.
- KDE Connect is amazing.
- Starting with 2024 the feeling of using Linux is what I imagine macOS users feel like, where everything is convenient and just works.

i only used linux for 3 months because i'm almost no time at home anymore and only had a dogshit laptop from 2015

This is like asking
>why not just Ubuntu instead of Mint

The answer is additional polish and convenience which matters a lot to the end user. Fedora has some severe pain points like having to manually enable RPM Fusion for proprietary drivers, codecs, etc. A good OS eliminates all pitfalls out of the box.

It’s a gradient starting from 15 years ago. Got a laptop and installed Linux on it but still used a desktop with Windows for games at the same time. On my Mint VM I had to fuck around for a hour or two to get the Japanese keyboard to work properly. Also tried switching to Japanese localization but it was pretty shit, felt like a trap and I ended up switching back to English.
Other than that the terminal I guess. I don't mind it at all, but learning to use it seems like a pain in the ass. I've already done embarrassing shit like writing "install kde-plasma" only to fail and have to look it up, to find out that it was "install kde-plasma-desktop" instead. It's usable, but not ideal. Up to 35% worse performance in games compared to Windows while AMD/Intel is mostly on par or faster on Linux. Wayland support is quite shit so some things don't work well, like high refresh rates and Waydroid hardware acceleration.

It's not that big of a deal since it's mainly affecting DX12 games played in Proton.
Any older game or indie game that's using Vulkan, OpenGL or DX10 will perform the same as Windows or even better even on nVidia. DX11 is a hit or miss but still mostly similar to native Windows.

>When did you switch?
3 months, 9 days ago
>Why?
I didn’t like Windows or Microsoft, and I was also one of the people who’d get that random black screen bug with the NVIDIA drivers there. I already owned a Steam Deck, which made me realize that gaming on Linux wasn’t a complete meme, so one day I got so fed up I just said “fuck it.”
>Previous OS?
Windows 11
>Current distro?
EndeavourOS
>Use case?
Gaming, work, web browsing, and media consumption
>What annoys you or doesn’t work?
I’m at the point where 99% of my issues with Linux stem from having an NVIDIA GPU. My main problems are: VKD3D performance being ass compared to Windows or AMD users, Waydroid not being able to use hardware acceleration, my Elgato PCIe capture card not working, and some anti-cheat games like BF6 being unplayable.
>What works great or is impressive?
Pretty much everything just worked out of the box. I can set a GIF on my AIO screen using CoolerControl despite the GitHub page saying support for my AIO is broken. After updating OpenRGB one day, it started detecting my Lian Li fan controller, so I no longer need a Windows VM to change colors. I can track my headset’s battery life right from the tray, something I couldn’t even do on Windows with the official software, and my Stream Deck works perfectly using OpenDeck. Also using the terminal so much has improved my typing speed

Last but not least, fuck Nvidia! The moment AMD releases a card that outperforms the 4080 by a decent margin, I’m drop-kicking this thing out of my system.

>When did you switch?
Last year almost to the date.

Mainly because MS keeps finding new and miraculous ways to make Windows shittier with each iteration. I've been flirting with various dual boots and VMs of Linux distros for the past decade and finally felt comfortable enough to make the permanent jump.

I hated having to fuck around with fstab to get my NAS to automount. It's not a big deal but one thing I miss about windows was how painless that process was by comparison.
>What works great or is impressive?
CachyOS is insanely quick. I've never had an OS load everything so damn fast before.
>>
>When did you switch?

Windows Update. Its speed & the fact that you cannot control it are major factors. Since then reasons not to go back have been piling up.

HDMI 2.1 on AMD and kernel level anti cheat but at the moment i have no title i want to play that uses it.

I had to scan a document for my landlord. The scanner dropped support for Windows in like the XP era and could only be used with some software that some guy in his garage wanted 30 bucks for. On Linux i plug it in and it instantly works. Also SSH is fucking magic.

>>What works great or is impressive?
having options, even if 95% of the many hundreds of distros out there are irrelevant to me the fact that they exist means no distro can do enshitification because people can just hop over to something else with little effort. this kind of happened when ubuntu did some unpopular stuff.
this is a double edged sword for normie adoption tho because the sheer number of distros scares normies. i dont think we have anything perfect for normies rn zorin os kinda has the perfect UI for that, universal blue's aurora/bluefin/bazzite have the perfect software/update system but still have some jank, mint has excellent on boarding experience but has old kernel/drivers/software.

>>I'm in the exact same situation, I just like the extra stability and rollback feature of the atomic desktop. Is everything you need available as flatpak? I mean you can still layer stuff, but still.
i only layer the terminal app (ghostty) because its a super weak potato pc and regular package launches a bit faster than flatpak (on a non potato pc its not noticable)
you can basically get anything in homebrew/a toolbox container without layering, if you really need a package quick in a pinch you just go
rpm-ostree install --apply-live fastfetch

this creates a new image with the package layered and creates some 'overlay' bullshit on your current running system allowing you to use the package immediately. so in practice it's like installing a package in the regular fedora (it's not, if the install somehow fails midway and you restart you will have a clean working system image that you had before the update)

even if in practice this level of security is probably rarely needed, (what are the chances ill get a catastrophic power outage mid critical update?, i also have a basic UPS) i like having it its basically an unbreakable system (unbreakable by mistake that is, ofc you can force it to break)

Whenever I install an updated nvidia driver (usually after a kernel update), I have to manually uninstall the older one.
I suppose it's the price I pay for being dumb enough to still be using an nvidia card.
The annoying thing is that when I built my current desktop I had wanted it to be an AMD build, but I couldn't because of hardware shortages at the time.

I have a 3D printer and wanted to learn CAD and working with FreeCAD was okay but learning that various CAD software on Windows is much better does kinda sour my experience with CAD and Linux but I'm not doing this professionally so I don't really mind.

Even though I don't play games much I did wanted to try some of it out on Linux, overall I am happy that my older games are working but maybe its not as up to par with Windows performance but as long it can keep a stable 60fps with moderate settings I am fine with it.

Overall things seem to just runs much snappier than Windows 10 especially after all the updates they pushed and new "features" they would add.

I was impressed that connecting to my wifi Brother laser printer was pretty easy, shoot sometimes Windows will have bullshit connection issues with various printers in my experience especially when its a network printer and I don't have to use a shitty spyware software application from these various printer companies to install a driver to get it work.

There were open sauce projects out there like Phobos Client or ImageGlass that concealed malware in plain sight, because people made the assumption that others will look upon the code for them. I use Windows 7 , which is the last decent windows version, although I know that nuwindows can still be installed on old hw, without ms account, which will still be a better choice than troonix

>When did you switch?
I started using Linux in 2010, but my official switch was 2025.
>Why?
Windows 8.1 wouldn't let me play League of Faggots and some steam games started injecting DLSS even if they weren't using it. Main reason: to avoid W10/W11.

>What annoys you or doesn't work?
On Arch? It's not an Arch problem but... I wanted to dick around with doing live backgrounds for the lulz, but with XFCE, I'm forced to use xwinwrap with mpv to do it. And even then, it covers my icons, hides my desktop selection. And when it changes wallpapers every 30 minutes, it goes over top of my current application. However, some russian has been working on video backgrounds for XFCE currently. So that's not so bad. My only real Arch (or possibly Linux?) complaint that I have is that if there's a space in the file location, and I double click the .sh file, it will say it doesn't exist. For example I have a sh file at, ~/GOG Games/Four Elements Trainer/four elements trainer.sh. I double click the .sh, and in the terminal, it says ~/GOG doesn't exist. Because there's a space. So I have to open terminal here and then type ./four \elements \trainer.sh
>What works great or is impressive?
Dude, easily the sheer amount of no tasks running. When I boot it up, there's usually only around... 31 threads running (pretty close to Windows XP) Whereas on Windows 10, it's somewhere around 6,322 threads.
For arch compared to other distros, I really love the AUR. Sometimes it's annoying that maintainers will leave (but I don't blame them)

this isn't a fundamental issue with .sh files, that's caused by a poorly written .sh file, namely, it's likely doing something like using $0 (the path that was executed), and isn't handling spaces correctly. you can fix it by editing the .sh. it's a common pitfall in scripting, because depending on how you handle "four elements trainer.sh", it could be uses as a single string with spaces, or three strings (four, elements, trainer.sh), as space is a common delimiter

how exactly are you running these? like the empty terminal and the graphical error suggests you're not just executing them directly, do you have some kind of "run with/in terminal" feature of your FM?
it seems like it might be an issue with whatever you're using to run them, rather than an issue with the script
>>
>>107031409
>>107031486
i installed thunar to see what options it has, and it seems that by default it won't execute shell scripts (wtf?). it might be running it with something else which itself can't handle a path with spaces, because the script looks fine.
i confirmed with this option set to "always" (and presumably "ask"), it runs the script fine
>>
>>107031486
So this is all I've done, if I recall correctly.
Arch + XFCE (which uses thunar)
Right click .sh file, allow program to be executed. Go to the program itself that gets executed, make that executable.
Right click .sh file, open with terminal emulator (which then remembers that choice for all .sh files).
Any .sh file that has a path with no space in it runs fine.
But usually to get it working, I just open terminal at that location then execute it from the term.

i can't imagine why it would be set to completely disable executing shell scripts, especially when it has an "ask" option. i've seen file managers ask, but never just hide it entirely, that's an easy way to get users stuck

basically, they disable script execution by default, and apparently don't provide an option to run them with a terminal either

the same guy is even considering making that option apply to other non-system binaries
https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/-/issues/1664

i haven't been able to find any such custom action being added by arch in arch's repositories, it does seem to me like a thunar bug

Back in January or February, I think.

I had been slowly getting sick of Windows bullshit for years, but the impetus for making the switch was that W10 EOL was on the horizon.
>Previous OS?

>Current distro?
Debian 13.

>What annoys you or doesn't work?
For whatever reason, I couldn't get my built-in speakers to work properly. I ended up just buying a pair of Creative Pebbles and those work fine. The one other thing that annoyed me when I first started out is that for some reason, every single Linux install defaults to the Radeon driver, which causes flickering on my machine. I couldn't figure out what was causing it initially, and I almost gave up on Linux.

>Usecase?

>What annoys you or doesn't work?
My Airspy SDR works, there's driver support. But the problem is in order to use SDR# which I prefer I need to use a really old version in Wine and connect it up to a server running natively on Linux. It's really annoying.
>What works great or is impressive?
Any linux terminal emulator > cmd.exe
>>
>>107032922
I also want to state another opinion. Sure, I could install LTSC again and use it until 2032 with security updates. But I can't count on software and driver support forever. I see it as an abusive relationship with Microsoft. I can't get a decent version of Windows unless I pirate it. No respect for their users.
>>

"Linux" isn't in charge of making nVidia drivers. It's entirely up to nVidia what they want to do with their drivers.
>>
>>107032909
Nvidia is not Linux. Also the Nvidia driver has been getting better. I think in 1-2 years they will get there. Give them some slack they are only the most overvalued company on the planet.
>>
>>107033092
>I think in 1-2 years they will get there
That's the most optimistic scenario. The most likely scenario is 3-5 years. Apparently a bunch of developers have signed an NDA and got access to some private nVidia documentation so that they can work on the open source parts of the driver a lot easier. But it's not really enough for them to implement a proper driver within 2 years unless nVidia opens up a lot more and opens up to more developers.
>>
>>107033293
I was talking about the "official" driver from Nvidia themselves. All that is missing is
- Proper Dx12 performance
- VAAPI if the browsers not switch to Vulkan video themselves first
- Somehow Waydroid needs to get accelleration figured out

Of course the Nova driver will take way longer and i doubt it will reach performance equality in this decade.

>What annoys you or doesn't work?
Lack of experience, I have years of experience on windows and having to re-learn is not fun, and linux documentation is absolutely awful. I dislike how the OS (I specifically used Ubuntu LTS and Fedora Workstation, but mostly Fedora Workstation) feels very online/cloud/centralized, I don't feel like stuff is local and *mine*. It's difficult to backup programs, unlike on Windows I can't just backup a random .exe from the internet on a local HDD and have it be installable and working at any point without any internet and all redist/requirements being packaged with the program. I hate relying on package mangement and package maintainers, I don't trust them, and I don't want my shit tinkered with. Firefox on Fedora ships with settings different from default installs on Windows, and it even has Fedora docs in bookmarks. I don't like it. There's a lot of software/hardware incompatibility issues. Every game has to rely on lutris or heroic launcher. I want to try out Battlefield BR when it releases, and it most likely won't work at all. The performance in games I tested was overall slightly worse than in windows, not major, but still ranging from 5-15% loss depending on the title. Modding is practically impossible, I spent like 45 minutes trying to get SMAPI to work on a GOG copy of Stardew Valley and it just wouldn't work. Not sure if it's Fedora or SELinux, but it just won't work despite the .install sh file seemingly completing the install in terminal.

The enshittification of windows over time. Went down hill since 7 SP1, nowadays it's nothing but AI powered slop, the gross abundance of bloatware and telemetric spyware harvesting your data every second of activity. Then reading news article about how almost every major windows update for 11 is causing massive problems, enough to where hardware is getting bricked. And you thought causing computers to do the endless bootloop BSOD in airports and hospitals were bad enough. Windows 11's UI treats the user as if you're moron with special needs; always moving around things that don't need to be moved, replacing text based options with icons, making things more difficult to find unnecessarily.

Sometimes the desktop will just randomly freeze and lock up, no explanation at all, nothing shows up in logs. Wondering if it's because of aging hardware? Nvidia drivers being janky? Oddly this doesn't happen in Windows, but only happens once in a blue moon. Some games can work out of the box, older games i would need to run Proton/Wine and hope it works out. The price of freedom I suppose. Having to learn how to use alternative programs for image editing, text editing, music/vidya editing, because the ones I used in Windows kinda works but buggy, or just doesn't work at all

I get it, backing up installers or portable .exe's is easy on Windows, but you can do that on Linux as well! For portable programs you can just get AppImages and to backup an installer you can just type:

Proton through Steam makes gaming the same as being on windows natively and I really was suprised at how painless gaming is, even though Mint isn't really a gaming focused OS.
Timeshift is super easy to set up for making frequent restore points, and the little GUI tutorial window that pops up when you install mint makes you aware of it which is great.

Overall I love it, after switching it felt like my computer was doing what I wanted it to do and ONLY what I want it to do for the first time in years.

install fish shell, it has shit like autosuggestion, autocomplete from your shell history .... all from the moment you turn it on no need to configure anything.
https://fishshell.com/
you can find it on most package managers and then do
sudo chsh -s /bin/fish

as for the prompt (the fancy colored bars with the shell type, folder, command time,os,battery life,date...) its a thing called oh-my-posh
https://ohmyposh.dev/docs/installation/linux
and you can select these themes or customize the .json to make your own it's fairly easy to understand if you mess with it for a few mins
https://ohmyposh.dev/docs/themes
honestly the default is very good except the file address text being white i think ill switch to the default with just a different text color

Mint on a laptop for a few months, replacing the Win11 that was preinstalled, soon to be Arch (btw) on both that and my main Win10 rig.

Blender, Krita, streaming, web browsing, maybe even some light vidya.
>What annoys you or doesn't work?
The way that the Arch wiki is laid out at times is... obtuse. Not wrong, but it may take me a reread or three for what I'm looking at to actually click. Works as a decent filter, at least. Just gotta keep reading.
>What works great or is impressive?
The modularity of just about everything, and the freedom of choice. It may take me a while to find my preferred things like text editor, but who knows, I may just stick with whichever I pick first.

Still have a lot to learn, and still need to break out of the Windows way of thinking, but I think it'd be fun to one day sit down and try installing Gentoo onto some spare hardware, or even try out Linux From Scratch for the hell of it.

I was already annoyed with Windows, and learning they were planning to put Copilot in made me decide I couldn't trust a single fucking thing the company was ever going to do again. Switched to Linux within the week, I believe.

Linux Mint

>What annoys you or doesn't work?
A laptop of mine has some weird refresh rate behavior that I haven't dug into thoroughly enough. It's probably an issue with the program I wrote making invalid assumptions about the hardware, though. I also have to set some arguments in Steam from time to time, but that's really NBD.
>What works great or is impressive?
It's so goddamn performant compared to Windows. The system boots in seconds compared to minutes on Windows. Everything runs really smoothly, even through Wine. My rig is not particularly new or high-powered, but it feels like I'm driving a sports car compared to a junker on its last legs. Plus, the system never does a single thing I don't want it to do. It feels like a home I never had, as far as an OS is concerned.

Installing Debian on a virtual machine right now. It's been so long since I've ran Debian that I'm going to play around with it before fully switching to it but I am certain that I want to make the switch.

> I just don't get why the user you create doesn't have sudo priviliges.
You have to leave the root password blank during the installation. When you leave it blank, sudo will be installed and the first user you create will have sudo privileges.

https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch06s03.en.html#di-user-setup

> In case you do not specify a password for the “root” user here, this account will be disabled but the sudo package will be installed later to enable administrative tasks to be carried out on the new system. By default, the first user created on the system will be allowed to use the sudo command to become root.

if it were up to me, i'd extend it to all files with the executable bit set, that aren't in PATH, but set it to ask by default, with a short warning in the dialogue saying only to execute trustworthy files. with a checkbox to not ask again.
while i can understand a user is more likely to run into a malicious shell script than other types due to their ease of creation, if the goal is to protect users, then it should just be any executable. "not in PATH" also because PATH is how you effectively define what you consider safe places to run programs from, having it hard-coded with just /bin and /usr/bin like he suggested wouldn't work everywhere, many programs and distros may place symlinks there or add themselves in PATH from other places, like if you run "wine" in gentoo for example, it's actually picked up in /etc/eselect/wine/bin as part of it's mechanism for picking your default wine provider

I'm not really a computer guy but I realized I was kind of gay and retarded for being aware microsoft is digital satan and continuing to use windows because it's very slightly easier
>>
>>107043377
Better realizing late than never Anon, what's even more unbelievable is we're getting to a point where the ease of use argument isn't even there anymore, Windows is so retarded now that it has both a legacy control panel and a newer control panel, on Linux this is a non issue, even installing software on Linux is easy, you just go into the Software Center and click install, meanwhile on Windows you gotta go to the software's website, download the fucking thing, go through the wizard, it's retarded, and because Linux is so based your update manager check for updates for all software on the computer at once.

all my shit just works on windows, several things I use regularly like substance painter required me, a retard, to fiddle around a bit to get working. I mostly use open source stuff if there isn't a good alternative though and all that shit runs fine on Mint so far unsurprisingly. I also had to wrap my head how linux manages drives.

Actually installing mint was miles easier than windows though, windows install makes you make an account and all sorts of gay shit.
>>
>>107044312
it took me 30 minutes to install windows because it kept "Downloading updates" and there was trillion options to uncheck, but it took me like 5 to install cachy, w11 is so fucked up
>>
>>107045031
Not that guy but I think the idea that the most involved process of using Linux is the installation is very much objectively wrong. If anything, installation is the easiest part.
>>
>>107045031
And that's not including wasting additional time having to create a microsoft account when it's not necessary.

I don't know what to tell you. I find Windows much more difficult to use and very lacking when it comes to basic features.
>my updates don't work on Windows 11 at all. All updates are stuck at 0% since the start of the year.
>window management is terrible compared to what it was on Linux even 15 years ago. You can't just grab a window anywhere to move it, you have to grab the fucking title bar. You can't just resize a window from anywhere, you have to actually aim at the 1px border.
>the file manager is just bad. It's slow as fuck, only started supporting tabs recently, doesn't have a split view from what I can tell, and it doesn't even support thumbnails for many file types (svg? never heard of it).
>it doesn't support file systems which don't randomly corrupt themselves (imagine using exFAT USB drives. NTFS is fine, but f2fs and btrfs are much better)
>installing (and especially updating) software is abhorrent compared to just using an app store and a single "click to update all" button
>all the nagware it has is annoying to deal with
>macOS and Linux are the global standards for almost every type of dev work. Doing dev work on Win is a massive pain in the ass unless you're a game dev
>sleep/suspend just doesn't work at all. My Windows laptop will randomly wake up, sometimes when just moved around or plugged/unplugged from power. There's always a 10% chance I'll wake up to a dead laptop. And no, I checked, there's nothing set up to wake the device.

I've been close to quitting my main job because we're required to do dev work on Windows. It's just a very unproductive, slow and overall annoying environment.
Also, that work-provided Windows laptop I'm mentioning is MUCH more powerful than my L590. However, Windows is significantly slower than it. And keep in mind, my L590 is running Linux off a 2.0 USB drive and I'm running a full GNOME DE and mostly flatpaks. Windows can't compete with a literal trash can running bloatware.

I switched back to Linux, had it before as my main driver for 4 years.

>When did you switch?
Right after Microsoft broke localhost development with an update on windows 11.

>Why?
I was already considering switching to linux on my main rig for a long while but after this update i got mad. It took me 4 days to figure out it was the update which was at fault. Not a misconfiguration on my end.

>Previous OS?
Windows 11, but before windows 11, ElementaryOS.

>Current distro?
Ubuntu Budgie

>Usecase?
I technically work in security, but i'm also a web and software developer. Currently working on a flutter based cross plat software and on a custom plugin for wordpress for a company with specific needs. I am also responsible for security monitoring of remote camera's and network security of companies.

>What annoys you or doesn't work?
GIMP annoys me. Winboat Photoshop kinda works but as long as they don't have graphics acceleration it's still a bust for me. My cheap chinese streamdeck doesn't seem to work either.

>What works great or is impressive?
Everything else. Literally, getting android sdk and flutter on windows was a living hell and on linux it just works. Flyenv is responsible now for selective envs for each of my projects. My computer went from 10% cpu, 8gb ram idle to 2%cpu and 4gb ram. Updates don't break things. I can actually customize my experience. I also have 5 monitors, so I run both an AMD and an nvidia graphics card. These were hell to set up on windows and on linux it just works without any problem.
