Why are Linux DE's still incapable of looking as professional as Windows 95 or Windows 2000? It feels like this extends to programs as well.
>>107023148Why is windows incapable of doing the same?
>>107023148Because of the exact same reasons the soviet blocks were shitholes and nothing good ever came out of them.
>>107023148Notice how you had to show a decades old UI, because modern Windows is objectively worse than KDE?
>>107023516That's the whole point you retarded animal. He specifically mentioned the old ones because everything that abandoned the classic look afterwards looked like trash, but troonix has never looked good to begin with.
>>107023148Windows 2000 was peak Windows UI, what was this style design called? Was it skeuomorphism?
>>107023609the icons are skeumorphic, yeah. i remember the win9x (incl. 2k) UI design being described as "3D". that is to say the way everything has shadows/highlights around the edges of elements give everything a recognisable separation of depth. it's like you can tell how it would feel if you were to run your finger over it

>>107025483Exactly the point. The only way for troonix not to look awful is to mimick classic windows.

>>107023148I mean objectively CDE looks more ""professional"" than Win98 but also much harder to use (can anyone tell how was it?). Also you can make KDE look like Win Classic piss easily.
>>107027082cde is older and was advanced for the time. You can still install and use it today, picrel is my install running on fedora. I wouldn't recommend it though, it's definitely tough to use. The dock at the bottom for example is a part of the window manager itself and programs constantly cover it if you want to maximize things, and I found it a pain to cycle through different programs I had open to use what I want.Check out nscde, it's a recreation of this with fvwm and functions much better. It's still a bit jarring at first but you can easily get used to it and modify it to run as a daily driver. I used it for a couple of weeks not to long ago. My favorite retro environment though is probably windowmaker and I've used that for much longer.>>107026449that looks very good too. I haven't ever used tde, I should boot it up sometime. It looks more professional because like a dog or niggercattle you were trained to associate it in such a manner. Now you cope, seethe, piss and shit yourself because 20 years ago was the high point of your life.
>>107027639Windows 8 and 10 made people put up with anything

>>107027827No of course modern kde plasma is more professional sir
Wake me up when you can do a total conversion of current Firefox versions to look like Netscape navigator again. What's the point of doing this if the web is infested with shitty design derived from Microsoft's abortion of an interface after 2012?
>>107024423LXQt then. KDE is not the desktop to make it look like an old OS. The way it handles aliasing of fonts is terrible and the general direction of KDE is to "modernize" it
>>107027852So you're seething about KDE that I didn't mention indicating the DE that buckbroke you.>>107027845And you're seething about a time you weren't alive and like a woman you're upset that some DE doesn't validate some vague "feeling" you have. You can use it with fvwm3 and I only noticed a single bug, which you can fix by changing a line in one of the cfg files.>CDE has compilation issues with newer versions of gccI compiled it from source a few weeks ago. They update the git with fixes and you can usually fix the errors you get with a command or two.
>>107023609>what was this style design called?Windows Classic. Hardly much else to call it. It's that "faux 3D edges, 90 degree angles everywhere" UI that pretty much died with the turn of the millennium. Mac OS did that too with Platinum. Look at Linux/UNIX desktops from the time they all had a similar design. It's really fucking good cause it means excellent definition of UI elements but is mostly a product of the hardware limitations of its time.Windows 10 is a sorta gayed the fuck up relative to it since it too has absolutely no round corners anywhere but it lacks all the definition of Windows Classic so it's just a colossal pile of shit.>Was it skeuomorphism?Skeumorphism is pretty much Apple's thing from 2007-2014, little else can fit under that definition. What it means is, the UI's design apes its real life function's equivalents. Things like the camera having a shutter animation and making the sound of an actual camera when you take a pic.Like this, it's a news reader thing that iOS 6 had and it looks like an actual fucking wooden bookshelf with your shit on it, angled back and all.
>>107029076Or OS X 10.8 and its harming of virtual cows. The leather window decorations, the torn paper hanging from it, it had paper animations too when changing pages.
>>107023702"Rectilinear faux 3d" or "embossed rectilinear" for the control boundaries and window decorations.Yeah isomorphic paletized cartoon skeuomorphism for the icons.
>>107027082>>107029123The big thing we really lost that actually mattered was CUA (common user access) which was the design language which meant all the GUIs worked more or less the same. The iPhone killed that.
