What the FUCK went wrong?Genuinely, how did it get THIS bad?
>>107023686They got too cocky with their "my way or the highway" approach to the desktop which turned Valve away cause gnome shell looked too alien for their whole plans to convince windows users to switch and gave KDE probably their strongest supporter. Now all they have worthwhile is the ebussy posts.
Use case for things going right?

This will make ebussy kill himself once it goes stable and takes over GNOME's place.

>>107023686Gnome is the standard t̶e̶x̶t̶ ̶e̶d̶i̶t̶o̶r̶ desktop environment. Also, you don't install the whole Gnome suite, but just gdm and gnome-shell. Since I use it, every version update made it a little bit better (with a slight regression in the last update where they started begging for donations in the notifications; inb4 kde, they already did that before gnome). Meanwhile I started using their calendar, contacts, and weather app, and it integrates very well with the desktop. Also it is true that the settings menu is a bit tidier than KDEs, but there are many customization options in gsettings on the command-line. Also, it is not resource hungry at all if you did the minimal installation I suggested; I run it on an X220 without any problems.
What is supposedly bad about GNOME? Does anyone sane really give a damn about stuff like square corners vs round corners?I don't like the 'Starred' thing on files and wish they'd let me hide that column on the file display but that's hardly a deal breaker, it's just mildly annoying.
>>107023686What went right?>written in C by extreme gatekeeping autists>complete software stack with bindings available for most popular languages>free of useless visual clutter>supports all of the wayland meme features like vrr, hdr, fractional scaling, vr headsets, etc>works well across keyboard, mouse, trackpad, touch>powerful extension system for adding random things you wantUnironically my favorite part of linux. Tried different DEs and WMs before settling on it ~3.18 and it's only gotten better.
This bad?GNOME is predicatbly bad. I know how to handle its issues. Plasma got shittier and shittier and shittier. I remember being fond of Plasma 5 towards the end. I use GNOME right now -because- of Plasma 6. And because there's no other Wayland desktop.
>>107023686They fell for the touchscreen meme.
>>107023686Removing the minimize window button was quite a bold move. It's one major reason I can't recommend vanilla GNOME to newcomers because they'll likely become frustrated at it.
>>107023871As I tested myself not really. GNOME is purely designed for keyboard + touchpad setups. So laptops. I tested this on one of those surface go tablets and I can tell you it's some dogshit. But I tested gnome on my laptop and it's exactly as usable as it needs to be.
>>107025611minimizing windows is really a midwit thing. high-iq individuals don't minimize because they use workspaces. low-iq normies don't minimize because all they know is how to operate a phone. so for me it's gnome, and for my mom it's also gnome; never once has she asked me how to minimize a window
it's the most zen. it's as close to perfect as can be achieved at our present level of humanity. you might find it awkward to begin with, but once you use it for a while and build the new neural pathways you'll see how retarded you were before gnome. gnome literally rescues you from retardation. gnome bleaches you.

GNOME classic mode still fucks
It's nearly perfect. Once you get over the adjustment period and stop trying to force incompatible workflows on it, you're rewarded with what is the closest thing to a modernized Windows 2000 "function dictating form" experience that stays out the way. I don't even do things the Windows way on Windows anymore, the minimize button, taskbar, and desktop icons are simply inferior.

Nautilus fucking sucks and WinTIle should be a standard function. I moved away from it because I simply don't have a use case for fucking with workspaces as a normal casul that spends most of my time full screened in a game, video, or browser.
>>107023686GNOME is terrible, but the fact that the alternatives are all even worse is really just sad.
>>107023686its incredible how absolutely dog shit font rendering is in GTK4/libadwaita softwareand it's all because ebussy couldn't see a use case for readable text on a typical PC monitor with 100% scaling

>>107027881Non-grayscale subpixel rendering is basically impossible to make work with the rotation and affine translation animations GNOME supports, breaks when scaled or under color transformations, and only works on RGB/BGR striped displays. It's not supported for practical reasons, not out of spite.
Gnome is great for desktop when extensions are used. Gnome takes a higher intelligence than your typical KDE user. The individual must be able to read and understand how to implement extensions.
To me Gnome 40 was worse than Gnome 3. Most people dont seem to think so. But I find it bizarre how they moved the dock from the left to the bottom. it made more sense on the left because the button to reveal it is in the top left, so your mouse is right there. Instead they moved it to the bottom very far away from the top corner. so it kind of boggles my mind. Now when I try modern Gnome I just dont get its design or workflow at all. To me it seems completely pointless and unintuitive. Gnome 3 was also kinda bad, but I sort of got the logic behind it. Gnome 4 just made it worse. I feel like Im missing something because I find it unusable. It is unusable with a mouse. People say its keyboard focused but if thats true then why even bother retaining elements of a mouse UI and having a bunch of GUI settings? Its a shame because I think Gnome looks pretty nice and clean. But I dont think it very nice to use
