I'm pretty sure that year can still be unlocked with physical access but if you don't already have the hardware to do so it's probably not worth it for the 2012 laptop tier performance you'll get out of the computer after un bricking it.

It may or may not have a firmware lock. Try making a bootable Linux Mint USB stick with a tool like Rufus. Macs from that time use standard Intel parts so choose an x86_64 ISO. To boot from the external disk hold the command or option key and then power it on. If the USB stick isn't detected, try moving to the port closest to the power connector.
