Unlike XP it didn't look like a complete toy, but it isn't quite as dull looking and completely readability/work/corporate oriented as W10 either. It also changed very little compared to late Vista, so most people upgraded machines and didn't feel a performance hit, unlike with W11 that's a big sys requirement change to 10, or Vista compared to XP. I do think 8.1 was rather fine looking too after getting rid of the start menu full screen janky meme. It was peak consumer-facing microsoft in general, Xbox 360 was pure soul and looked great too compared to the very boring looking PS. On a technical level nowadays it's pretty much worse in every aspect compared to W10 22H2, but it's very pretty still.
