Because I'm a Commodore man
I prefer what I have
>>107028429>french
>>107025194>TRS-80 ultra gigachads rise upThese were available at any small or large town Radio Shack in America.
>>107025194For me it's rich chocolatey Ovaltine.
why don't you have an Ann Arbor?
>>107025194Is that hazelnut flavored Ovaltine?
>>107025194There was one where I live for 2oo€ but that's too old for me.
>>107028429Basé et Minitelpilulé. But this is a dumb terminal, OP's machine is a computer.
have one of these, somewhere
let's not turn this hazeltine into... HAMMERTIME
>>107031704neat!
>>107031404Je sais, it was just some silly shitpost just because they look similar from a distance
>>107025194Mine has more ram. 640k should be enough for just about anyone.
selling my amiga 1 and 2 was my only regret in life.
>>107025194i was using a usb to rs232 adapter to send text to the terminal or get text from the keyboard. rs232 so only 3 wires (best if used the handshaking lines but) and can be a really long cable.
>>107025194no use case
terminal was connected to a ampro z80 board (was running a RBBS under CP/M 2.2 on floppy) but that broke so used with the windows pc instead.
might be fun to connect the terminal to a eso32 via rs232
>>107037227I think some people did that.Theoretically an ESP32 could turn an old terminal into full computer. A really limited one, kinda on par with 80s computers but a computer nonetheless.
>>107036972Minitel 1 was even more similar I think
>>107037307Hi!!!!!!!!
>>107031076That is fucking cool anon!
>>107025194Pfft i would rather an Agat 4 cyka
>>107037003i was given a boxed C64 when i was 14 in 2004. i hadn't heard of it before. i could obviously tell it was a computer.. i had the box, it showed that. but it just looked like a useless old computer to me, so i ended up throwing it out.in my defense, i only had the computer and the box, not a power supply, a floppy/tape drive or any software, so while i would have poked around if i could, i didn't think it was worth the effortoh, he also at the same time gave me a full-tower 286 pc, which i also didn't keep (only kept 386+ stuff at that time, i was interested in old computers, hence they gave them to me). i forgot/didn't know what model is what, but more recently i've found it looked a lot like an ibm ps/2 model 80
>>107039279yeah, but a Tektronix 4501 is even cooler. It used used storage tube CRT, programmably-persistent phosphors when RAM video memory was really expensivehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ind_2eMzsbMThe past is chock full of forgotten cool technology, anon, and old terminals deserve more love…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-F7ZySfgZ0
>>107042537super early computers used crts for memory (ram)https://www.radiomuseum.org/forum/williams_kilburn_williams_kilburn_ram.html
For me, its the MSX.I just wish mine had a floppy drive, but realistically everything is going to be done via ROMs loaded trough a cart.
>>107025194I just wanted to share this thing that I accidentally found while just mindlessly clicking around on a website before I had coffee, I don't even remember how I got here:https://www.commodoreos.net/CommodoreOSIntro.aspxIf the link is too spooky here is the same video in youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2fGP59mJ5MI've never had nostalgia for this era of computing because I wasn't alive or if I was (born in the 90s) I was way too young to remember. I think it's kinda cool but also kinda pathetic in a way. If I met someone who owned one I'd love to ask questions about it but I don't see myself buying something purely based off of hardware or software nostalgia. Thoughts?
>>107026752I just read this after I posted this lol >>107043675
>>107043197The MSX boxes were generally so stylish.
>>107042537>Boomer sitting there thinking "Wtf am I even looking at?">Puts a pencil on those old, fragile, finicky hard drives you'd have to plug in and remove to transport datakek
>>107043765The Sony floppy disk models were pure kino. If I ever get a second MSX its going to be one of these.
>>107028429I have this, but the power supply is busted and the documentation online is either all in french or it doesn't cover what I need, it's dead
>>107044740You might try checking all the caps and just replacing them. Also even if they're all in French, AI OCR translation tools are pretty robust these days. Try running the documents you've found (if they look like they can help with the power supply) through one and see if the translation passes.
>>107044776the transformer or whatever blew up or something, I'm not sure about the specifics but it's basically impossible to replace.I did look for documentation but nothing really looked like it talked about that, such a shame
>>107044791Only other alternative is to buy a second one with its own issues and salvage its power supply.I fixed my Thinkpad 380XD through the magic of buying a second one and smooshing their parts together. The first one had a ruined processor, I think. Wouldn't even reach the bios.
>>107046296I tried to look on ebay and the only one on sale was from a guy who didn't even want to confirm if it worked at all
>>107046305There's a seller by the name EveOfEurope on Etsy that sells some. One listing says untested, and another (more expensive) listing says turned on and letters typed but being sold as untested anyway:https://www.etsy.com/listing/1818958538/vintage-french-minitel-1-telic-alcatel
>>107042537Display demo
>>107040046I bet all of the 4 people in the soviet union who could afford this were really happy with it
>>107047336it's so insanely pretty
>>107047336Based, it's time for thin-line vector graphics to come back. I'm doing my part.
>>107047336Very cool. Thanks anon.
>>107047653That looks pretty sweet, anon. Is this a project of yours?
>tfw no Hazeltine 1500 Lætitia gf
>>107031360UK and USA butchered the name for some reason.
>>107048155ovomaltine sounds nastier than ovaltine
>>107048155There's a funny story behind that, the Swiss rep. who was getting it patented in the UK had a thick accent and the patent registrar didn't understand him and put down ovaltine instead of ovomaltine. They tried to change it back but the registrar wouldn't or couldn't change it once it was Royally approved, so it stuck as Ovaltine. This carried over to the American and other English speaking markets.
no games
>>107048276Not true, look up Tennis for Two
>>107048155Just so you know your swiss chemist misspelt Ovum as ovom because he thought the plural of eggs was ovom and not ovum. The urniverse got revenge by completely renaming his product.
>>107048058Yep, that specific one is just something I made quickly for work 3 years ago when implementing a recursive filtering to visualise things, I made a habit of making small programs like this all using the same system. I made a library that contains this GUI system and renderer: https://github.com/Photosounder/rouziclib
>>107048281https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeQMTUl70eoIt's not 1956 anymore bro, it's 1980
>>107048560IF you truly lived in the future then why are so many people, even people who weren't alive when this technology was around, yearn to go back to it?Because we are living in an actual Dystopia and people are comforted by technology that reminds them of a time when jobs were plentiful, homes were affordable, and games were worth plaything.
>>107048647It's like why car mechanics like old cars, the technology is more comprehensible and there's an art to what they did back then, but I do like some doomerposting too
>>107048525Sweet! Thanks, anon. You're clearly a highly-proficient C developer, so please don't take offense: is there a C++ wrapper for this library? All my other work where this would be very useful is in C++.
>>107048844You can use it directly using extern "C" {
extern "C" {
>>107048266That's gold, anon. Gold!
>>107047336Holy shit
>>107048266It's probably for the best desu, English speakers don't like names with too many syllables.
>>107048525I like this. How do I use this? What's the setup to make my shit look like a bell labs program from 1979
>>107051223Look at "Example project", when I need to make a new project like this I fork this. The """documentation""" is just quick_reference.h. There's a toolbar for editing GUI layouts off-screen towards the bottom left (you have to enter the zoom-scroll mode using the middle mouse button or Alt-Z to find it).
>>107043197>>107044210Is 100€ ok for msx2 with floppy and serial/ide cartridge? One is for sale locally.I want something old to play with that is not Amiga/Atari and use it as serial terminal from time to time.
