The main usability issue with GNOME is how the whole project is a race to the bottom to see how many features they can remove, often without any suitable replacement (like how they stripped out systray icons for *years* and only just recently got around to a half-assed reimplementation).
I like gnome just need dash-to-dock and appindicator

i try to stick as much to the defaults as i can (less breakage), but i remember having to install plugins for absolute basics with gnome. kde is fine, used xfce before and that was also fine
