>Can theoretically store up to 2GB of data; more than twice as much as CDs>Probably even faster than cartridgesDid VHS have soul?
>>107025835>soulno, they were just shit
Using storage mediums in alternative ways fascinates me. I knew a guy who recorded his and my favorite RADIO shows on VHS and back then I was like wtf. But yeah, you could reach WAY higher audio quality than normal audio tape by simply recording to VHS. Also, 240 minutes of really great audio quality instead of 90 minutes of meh quality of tape. Also METAL audio tapes were shit value for money in comparison. But all this was only for a very small time frame. When VHS was cheap but MP3 was already becoming mainstream.
>>107025835They literally rotted in storage. As do CDs but at least it's a slower process if you keep them away from sunlight and high/low humidity.
>>107025970>They literally rotted in storage. How about not living in a damp basement?
>>107025835Any reel type magnetic tape storage is a huge pain the the ass, it cannot be browsed. You have to let it play in order to get the data. That's why we went to magnetic tape storage that was on a disc (The 5.25" and later 3.5), it could actually be browsed.
>>107025835Take any FullHD/4K movie and copy it on a VHS, then watch it on an old TV. You will unironically enjoy it more than the high definition and high quality version, because your brain will fill the missing details with details that are perfect to you.High Definition and 4K were a mistake.>>107025937I seem to remember some multi-track devices used by professional musicians that used VHS instead of DAT.
>>107026197It's not just about watching, though, it's about storage. And these things rot.
>>107026400>>107025970>And these things rot. What is your damn problem? There are VHS tapes pulled from abandoned or even demolished houses that still play fine. You can fuck up literally anything if you try your best at being retarded. If you store them away like normal human bean they will be fine for at least another 30 years.
>>107026485Yes they will play but the signal will be degraded. They literally begin as 320kbps MP3s or 10 Mbps H264s and end up as 64kbps MP3s and 1 Mbps H264s.And that's in OPTIMAL storage.
>>107026189why did the oldfag mainframes use tape drives for data storage then
>>107026545Because they were operated by competent people that could mantain the complex system of motors, belts and clutches necessary to access tape randomly
>>107025835>Did VHS have soul? No, it was always terrible. The only thing it ever had going for it was it was a cheap way to record TV yourself. It didn't do a good job, but it worked enough.
>>107026545Because it was the only practical way to get the amount of storage you needed at a cost you could tolerate. But those tapes were a hell of a lot better quality than the shit used for VHS.
>>107026540so much THIS rotational velocidensity is a bitch
>>107026605>Because they were operated by competent people that could mantain the complex system of motors, belts and clutches necessary to access tape randomlyamazon barrel of lubricant order up

back when i had windows 95 i'd do system backups on VHSi dont think my hard drive was even a gig back then
for me it's microfiche
