But a friend gave me a "Magic Mouse" and I'm surprised that it doesn't really seem to work.

I might after Windows 11 stopped recognizing anything but left clicks on all my mice one morning, spent 3 days researching and troubleshooting but apparently it was at kernel level and I'm the only person who's ever had this problem so I had to reinstall and lose yet another day of work, I also got tired of Edge randomly setting itself as the default browser every few days. I use NixOS at home and it's very comfortable but Linux can't run the software I need and anytime I report a bug it becomes an endless game of e.g. KDE blames Wayland, Wayland blames Nvidia, Nvidia blames Wayland, Wayland blames KDE. My home computer has been running Linux exclusively since Ubuntu 10.04 but the community is becoming increasingly hostile (look at the NixOS drama) and despite what everyone says, shit's stagnated, it seems like the only thing improving nowadays is Proton and KDE and everything else is delusions and romanticism, so a Mac is really tempting for me right now, I just know I'd be trading a huge pile of problems for another pile of problems of unknown size. honestly it just werks and the battery lasts for fucking ever its amazing. i dont know why or how this is the case but i dont know why windows doesnt switch to this. having a battery last multiple days of work without charging is a godsend.

because a computer does 2 things. it runs the apps i want on the hardware i want. the mac limits both of these things. plus the UI, albeit prettier, is just not as functional. the dock doesnt work as well as the windows dock as far as window management, resizing/snapping shit isnt as good. it takes up so much screen real estate because by default it wants you to have the dock and top menu bar always showing and it builds the windowing around that. the dock and menu bar themselves take up more space and so you end up autohiding them. at that point im just running brave with nothing else on the screen so whats the difference from using windows?

Corpo 16 inch M4 Pro with 48gb RAM here, never used mac before. Retails for around 3-4k I think.

In my previous job I had a maxxed out dell xps 9520(i think?) with an i9/32gb/1tb/rtx3050 which retailed for around double what the macbook costs.

Aside from the gorgeous 4k oled screen on the xps, I'd say I'm never touching a windows machine again for anything to do with code. Battery life on the dell was fucking ass and the i9 would make it heat up quick, whereas the mbp can stay up for 8-10hrs of continuous usage easy. I cannot say I've ever heard the fan spin on the mbp, and the unified ram thing is very useful for local AI inference.

Would I buy one? Prob not the 48gb model cause it's kinda overkill for my hobby shit but yeah, I write a fair amount of code and it works. I CANNOT say the same for win11 machine which dies/bsod fucking randomly.

Not an iphone user so idk how well that integrates, but airpods work great.

Always hated Apple, but got a cheap M1 Air recently as a portable machine for work/media as everything else on the market atm is shit and overpriced.
This has completely changed my mind. It's a lot closer to the average linux distro than I thought once you get brew installed, god tier battery life compared to x86, and runs rings around anything else in this price range (which is almost all chromebooks). Even supports my 5.1 headphones properly without needing the stupid lg hub software. It's nice.
I'm in no rush to get an iphone or ipad or whatever, but I wouldn't mind hunting down an old 12in powerbook or something similar for shits and giggles. These fruit themed things ain't half bad at all.

you know i do have windows backup enabled, those backups go to a 8TB HDD, but ill be honest if my main ssd decides to shit itself and i cant boot into my pc, I have very high doubts i would just be able to restore the pc from that 8tb drive, of all the years of installing different versions of windows i have never seen an option on brand new install to recover windows from backup.
