I made a 500gb .vc file with veracrypt and I also made a 250gb partition inside of it.I think I used ntfs format or ext3 format but the program said that the partition can't be exact and that the hidden partition can be overwritten or something like that. What I want is to write and move tikes in the outer partition and the hidden partition but I written once in both disks and veracrypt said that the program tried to overwrite the hidden partition and aborted and that I have to redo everything but I haven't seen any corruption.I'm also selecting the protect the hidden partition option when I open the other one, what should I take from this messages? As long as I keep both partitions below 240gb should I be fine, am I always at risk or what?
why does each device in my network need an assigned private ip address when mac addresses exist?instead of the receiving packet or frame being destined to my private ip address, couldn't that be my mac address instead? This might seem like a really dumb question, but what I really want to know is, why does my network device need to use two different addresses at all times?
>>107036030it's a decent observation, but the mac addresses are on a different layer than the IP stack. You could be in a situation where you aren't using IP at all or you have multiple IP addresses on a single network port/mac address. There's IPv6 stuff that will use the mac address for the end of the IPv6 address.

>>107036030>couldn't that be my mac address instead?Yeah they're called link local addresses. IPv6 has it for addresses in fe80::/10 and v4 has it as an optional extension. My monitor seems to be dying - a chinkshit gsync monitor from second wave/late first wave (before the selection of freesync monitors was any good). Most obviously the backlight but it could be more as I'm not sure exactly what mechanics from what component reveal what effects. Assuage my curiosity and help me figure out if its plausible to have repaired. Symptoms: Dimming of the bottom left corner (comes and goes), flashing of varying intensity and frequency (also comes and goes), most severe flashes sometimes also show what looks like interlacing (horizontal banding pattern), and prior to all of those I started to notice temporary burn-in which has been getting stronger.

bros, has anyone taken CompTIA PenTest+ (specifically PT0-003) recently? Any tips, tricks, opinions, or anything? I have to take it for school unfortunately. I got unlucky with the timing because the previous version of the exam was retired recently, and the new version doesn't have much study material. It's pretty much just CertMaster, which is impressively fucking bad, and the Sybex book, which I'm reading though, but it's a slog. I do cyberstuff and have other certs and shit, so hardly any of the material is over my head, but goddamn there's a lot of it and it's so nuanced. R*ddit doesn't seem to have much to say about it except that it's surprisingly difficult for a CompTIA exam. I don't see a way to cheese this exam (well I guess I could pay for an exam dump), so looks like I have to rely on the tried-and-true method of Adderall and just grinding it out. I want a cheap secure laptop for some basic network management tasks, like managing Ubiquiti stuff (running server locally to manage switches and such) and TrueNAS systems.I simply don't feel comfortable doing this sort of stuff from a gaming PC anymore where I install kernel anti-cheat shits that are becoming more common and prevalent because they go against common sense. I'd like to restrict the damage a compromised PC can do by not having that PC ever able to access the NAS config so it is unable to delete snapshots or stuff like that. I just want the gaming PC to have basic access to some folders from shares and read-only access to others. For specs my needs would be minimal since I would only use it only to do these things but I assume it has to be somewhat modern. I guess I would install some Linux on it instead of Windows because Windows is annoying these days, and I already put up with its bullshit for the gaming PC.Should I be shopping for a used thinkpad or would I be better off just grabbing a cheap new laptop?

How the heck do I create a new repo from github mobile app on android? do I need to use the browser ver first and then update from the app? it makes no damn sense
>>107040876many do, even mp3 is traditionally fixed-bitrate. mp3 supports variable bitrate, but i'm not sure it was even really an intentional/official feature, it's just that since files are encoded in small, separate units, encoders can exploit this by doing extra analysis to estimate how much bitrate a particular unit needs and encode them at differing bitrates to one-another. i am aware some really old mp3 decoders will struggle to play variable bitrate (VBR) mp3's, likely because they assume the first bitrate they see is the bitrate of the whole file

>>107041955Mesh is a meme, the only merit of it is if you have absolutely no way to get a cable to the place you need to position the access point. No cloud bullshit necessary.
>>107042163Maybe if your monitor (and graphics) supports HDMI-CEC you could script it. Some monitors also support input switching when a connection becomes active/inactive so you could force a swap by having each PC turn it's video output on/off.
>>107044198Mesh just means seamless routing transmission from one AP to another. It doesn't imply anything about backhaul.

>>107043818I dunno much about vinyl but I recall you need a 'pre-amp' to convert a turntable's output to line-level audio. Then from there you can amp it for headphones or speakers. If the amp you're considering has the ability to pre-amp an incoming signal then you're gucci. Otherwise you may need to add something extra into the pipeline.>>107044261All the 'mesh' products I've seen at the consumer level appeared to focus on being able to plug in extra APs around the place and have them automatically find each other and establish backhaul over wireless (i.e. negotiating automatically to establish a 'mesh'). If you can wire them in for backhaul then great, do that always.>>107044271Yeah, with varying success. Depends how clean your power lines are. But wireless backhaul AP-to-AP is similarly terrible IMO. Proper point to point is OK but that's extra infrastructure.
>>107044271I've lived in places where Powerline works really well and some where it doesn't. Depends on implementation details of the wiring that normally don't matter. MoCa is a great option if you have modern coax installed.

Pointers and iterators to vector's values are not stable i.e. when a vector is reallocated, the vector's values will be moved somewhere else and your pointers will be kept pointing to old invalid values So, your vec2 is storing a bunch of pointers to nothing. >>107043085> for laptops I'd always go with SSDWhat about for a desktop?I've got a mini-ITX build with a 1TB NVme main drive. For a secondary, the case only fits 2.5 inch internals.it worth going for a second SSD just for local storage, or should I save money and go with just a HDD. Honestly I think the issue for me is more on reliability than anything else. Are SSDs really more reliable than spinning rust, for the increased cost? For the 2TB drive size I'm considering, there isn't that much in the price difference. $80 for an HDD verses $100 for the cheapest SSD. But what kind of quality can I expect from an SSD in this price range?
>>107047195Disk Inventory X is giving me similar results to the results I mentioned from ncdu, OmniDiskSweeper and GrandPerspective. It's listing the source of 70~ GBs for the whole internal drive, but it's not reporting almost 200 GBs of used data (yes, I allowed all permissions).
>>107043139NTA, what if I wanted an extra spare big HDD to store movies and backups of more important files? Should I just save up more and invest into a NAS instead?
Everywhere I went today, sites were trying to sell me "SAS" drives for hotswaps or server or something. I'd never heard of these before today. Is this a meme now, or did a hundred datacentres just go out of business?
>>107047374If it's JUST for storage? Get a DAS and chuck a shit ton of HDDs on it.I bought this on sale and I use HDDs on it. >>107047541You mean installing games on it?lolnoGet an internal SSD. That is for pure storage only.
>>107047568No. For storing games when the main NVme runs out of space. Steam allows shuttling games back and forth between drives.
>>107047631I don't use Steam but I'm 100% sure they only INSTALL games, not let you download an installer like how GOG does it.If you can unplug the DAS after copying the files form it to your laptop, then sure it'll work. But if you need the DAS to be on then you are reading files off it, which it is not designed for.
>>107033091FOSSlet here. I don't know whose fault it is and I don't want maintainers to tell me to complain somewhere else lol
>>107047398have you rebooted? i've had issues in linux where a deleted file was being held open by a process, so it wouldn't free the disk space. also, files that exist on disk but are hidden under mounts...
>>107047665Probably Steam would support the DAS if it gets recognised as a secondary drive. But a DAS is 1000% overkill for what I've got in mind here. The gaming rig has a 1TB main drive which will eventually run out. But Steam allows games to be installed on alternative hard drives, which suits, say indie games or games that don't need SSD read speeds. On a tower build, the best option is a cheap 4TB 3.5 disk and have done with it. But the 2.5 inch form factor with the mini-itx case is complicating this. Maybe I'm just better off with an SSD. There doesn't seem to be as much price difference in the 2.5 inch form factor.
>>107047712>have you rebooted?Oh yes, multiple times. I am forced to do it often because the space gets so full that some programs stop working. >>107044198The big issue that my household is facing right now is whenever anyone moves from upstairs to downstairs or the other way around, their device refuses to switch to the stronger signal. The main router is upstairs and an AP downstairs, I've tried having them both share the same SSID, different SSID, tweaking the channels and what have you but it never fully resolves this until the user manually connects to the stronger signal or turns off and on their WiFi. Maybe it's because the AP I setup is an old router and it's not strong enough or whatever.Supposedly these mesh stuff specifically addresses this. But yeah the cloud management thing kinda rubs me the wrong way, not sure if I'm being paranoid. I don't want my browsing habits to be tied to my email address.
>>107042461>powered hub....meaning one that has its own power source, not drawing power from the computer?
>>107039300anon that pic is like 16 million years ago
>>107049331On the Ubiquiti APs I have there's a little tick box for 'roaming assist' that does a good job of kicking off this kind of device that behaves 'sticky' to an AP. If it detects a client's signal on it's current AP is weaker than it can see it via the other AP, it disconnects it and forces it to roam to the other one. If your current kit is different makes and models then you're probably going to need to swap to a single brand to get that ability, but I don't think it's specific to stuff that's branded as 'mesh'. Just be sure 'mesh' is actually going to do that for you, the only person I know who tried to switch to a mesh network in his home absolutely hated it and it gave him way more trouble than it was worth. But all his problems with it were due to wireless backhaul, so as I said earlier if you have the option of maintaining that wired bit from the AP to the router then you should be fine.

I have a Ugreen CM559 RTL9210B enclosure that has an isolated issue with an included cable.>C to C cable works perfectly @ 10Gbps>C to A works fine for any 5Gbps slot>plug C to A into USB3.2 Gen2 A slot >instant phy level interference with chipset-connected PCIe Wi-Fi cardNone of the marketing material seems to indicate that it's not a 10Gbps cable, but another C to A cable works perfectly fine and doesn't cause issues. I'm guessing that it's just that specific cable marginally negotiating 10Gbps with a poor design/shielding, which is then blasting EMI through the motherboard. Maybe this is just C to A being shit? The weird part is, it seems to be able to test at the rated 10Gbps with that cable, although I haven't done sustained tests somewhat out of fear. I feel like this is not stupid enough as an /sqt/ question, but oh well...
>>107060750I did have steam open, but it was on my library, and I messaged someone (who didn't send anything beyond just messages)so maybe it bugged out? My library just has my games, everything else is disabled
>>107062700I guess it was just that specific input, because it's working fine with another movie
I downloaded Loud House season 1 and for all episodes the subtitles show up too early. The problem I have is that the subtitles are hardcoded into the .mkv so I unless I manually change it every time, for every episode, it won't be synced. I'm not doing it manually, is there a software or anything I can use to do it all for me? I know of SubSync but that only works with an external text file for the subtitles
Is there any simple way of sharing files across my own phones? AndroidI may just use Telegram
Is there a really simple way to one-click export and one-click import Firefox profiles? about:profiles isn't the most intuitive thing to use.
I've been getting a lot of BSODs lately, always on startup or a few minutes after starting up. Whocrashed gives me this stuff but I don't know what any of it means, does anyone here have any idea what I should be doing with this to fix my BSOD problem?Whocrashed also said there was a problem with amdkmdag.sys but that was in a much earlier report, and I already uninstalled all of my AMD drivers completely, used the utility to make sure there was nothing left on my computer, then fully reinstalled them. I don't think amdkmdag.sys is the culprit here.
>>107064186I think kde connect also works across phones (& computers) too

>>107033091With >10 year old laptops, why is it a dice roll whether or not replacing the HDD with an SSD will work? Is there some way to trick it into working?

is there any reason a /g/entleman wouldn't choose a rugged phone over a regular phone, just for reliability and durability alone? You can buy cases and screen protectors for a regular phone but with a rugged one you can be sure it will survive thousands of falls whereas you can't with a regular one
>>107033091lads should I buy a used laptop with a 4070? I just wanna upgrade from my 4050 and run games at med settings 60fps.
>>107065827Huh, this Toshiba Satellite A120 seems to just freeze upon pressing the BIOS setting button (apparently F2). Pressing Esc and going to the F1 setup isn't helpful, just dates and boot order.
What is a good extension for Chrome that disables unused tabs to save on memory?I used to use the extension "FreeTabMemory" but it turned out to be adware and I had to go through a whole process of deleting it from my computer. I looked up extensions that serve this function, but I don't know which ones are trustworthy considering FreeTabMemory wasn't.
