We need to talk about the most useless key: Caps Lock. I have replaced mine with a bean. It is a tactile reminder to not use the key, and in emergencies, it is a nutrient. This is peak efficiency. Who else has ascended?
>>
hitting caps is quicker than holding shift
>>
I just swap caps and escape.
vim user btw.

SHUT YOUR MOUTH THIS KEY IS EXTREMELY USEFUL EXCEPT FOR WHEN IT GETS STUCK IN WHICH CASE IT'S VERY ANNOYING

>>
>>107035292
I map caps lock to ctrl, use it all the time.
>>
I use my capslock key as a dedicated compose key so I can type unicode symbols
>>
>>107035292
In English, it's halfway useful, since numbers AFAIK are still numbers, in German, all the numbers become the special characters when holding shift.
(It's been 20 years since I last used an English layout on a daily basis.)
Fuck you, Zoomers, btw.

Holding shit interferes with efficient typing. Having it like this is just like hitting any other key.

but how else am i going to use proximity voice chat in dayz?
>>

EXTREMELY BASED.
>>
Caps lock is my escape key because I use vim and holding caps lock is my hyper key to do anything I need like opening or switching to a specific app (I do hyper + f for firefox for example). Pretty useful I say. I use skhd on my mac for this purpose. I also bound some keys for Alfred actions

this isn't really a problem anon, anyone who cares just rebinds capslock to something else, like backspace or shift. Removing the key only reduces the potential of your keyboard.

Caps Lock has always only affected letters, as far as I'm aware
*Shift Lock* will shift all keys like you're describing, and Linux has an option to emulate that, but I don't know of anything enabling it by default

I'm 32 and DOS on an IBM Model M was my first computer. Scroll lock was to freeze the console output. To lock the scrolling.
Highly irrelevant when Windows 95 came out. So now just makes the keyboard look even.
For some keyboards, the button isn't even programmed to do anything other than turn a light on.

>>107035575
This is only necessary because the toggle becomes inverted in the game. If the caps lock key wasn't a toggle in the operating system with an annoying LED, you wouldn't have to bother doing this.
>>
>>107035309
you become dependent on this and then cant use any machine other than yours. it hurts your ability to adapt in different places in the world. this is the first step in redefining all your macros, using azerty, demanding a keyboard that splits spacebar into new keys, not being able to be productive unless youre in your expensive comfy chair, etc.

making a personalized software config is a different thing because you can largely take it with you anywhere, but even then you should avoid anything crazy or idiosyncratic. stick to common consensus key bindings and well-known settings and tools. NOT because the consensus is the best or most right, but because you need to be able to have mobility and not be slowed down when youre outside your comfort zone. it's a concern of general survivability, you need to be able to fight with the available weapons and work with the available tools.

>>

>>107035292

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
If this had a normal function row, it would be fine, actually. The touch bar is fucking wretched. It's entirely software controlled, and if you don't have the software, the bar just turns black. No function keys. No alternatives.
>>
>>107038359
The ultimate post-op board.
Nah actually still too many keys, so there's room for improvement.
>>
>>107035292
It becomes useful when you use it for actually typing in all-caps and use left shift when capitalizing letters on right and vice versa. Less keystrokes, less strain on a single pinky
Otherwise just remap it
>>107035330
JIS the best for that and almost in general. I just wish they had an extra key next to left shift instead of making the backspace small. Small spacebar and more thumb keys should be stantard. The kana layout on it makes no sense.
>>107036768
Alot of tech jobs are remote and you can have a keyboard with programmable memory. Azerty is a French? layout and one of the worst out there worse than QWERTY. Dvorak is available on most current operating systems.

>>
>>107035308
no, you seem hitting caps requires pushing down on caps, then lifting up from caps,

then it requires doing the same thing once you're finished with it

pressing down on the shift key only requires pressing down, and doing nothing else

I hope this tip can be helpful for you

yes it is a dependency.
but I am not typing on other people's computers so what do I care.

First I learnt dvorak.
Then I started learning vim.
While I was learning vim I remapped the caps and esc.
Then I got an ergo split keyboard, and use thumb buttons for backspace, delete, alt, shift and control.
Also using a macro layer for non-alphanumeric characters.

Dvorak is available on any OS which is why I chose it.
Unlike Colemak, which is only available on Windows from Windows 11.
I can't type in Qwerty because of that.
Alternate keyboard layouts also suck if I need to use shortcut based tools like GIMP or Blender because their keybindings are made for Qwerty and then I have to switch between layouts to type.

I'm using vim plugin on whatever editor I'm given.
I don't have a vim config as I don't want to be tied to a single machine but customising too hard.

Switching Keyboards isn't an issue though.
Which was surprising I thought I would be unable to use my pinkies for shift but they still have their memory.
And my typing speed is unaffected.

>>107037560
I use powertoys on windows / keyboard settings on linux to remap it.
I don't have a vim config.
>>

>>
>>107036768
you're either trolling or retarded. you can swap caps and escape in a TRILLION different ways on any machine, plus it doesn't take more than a day to get used to hitting escape the normal way again (speaking from experience as a 10+ year vim user).
>>
>>107036768
I can still use normal layouts after a couple minutes of stumbling (it helps that a bog-standard layout feels quite different to my split keyboard). Sorry to hear you've lost the ability to adapt.

This, it should just be control in the first place.
Caps lock is a near pointless key and absolutely does not deserve so prominent a position. It would be just fine up in the function row alongside shit like scroll lock or print screen.

Not the same anon, but I find myself tripping over my fingers if I try to touchtype. Even had classes in highschool to learn to touchtype and I sucked. I write faster using my indexes and majors for keys if I place my fingers on DVNK. I don't have really any pattern, I just follow the flow. I still use my pinky for Enter/Shift/Caps/Delete/End/Home.

>>

They did this for one single model of the X1 Carbon and then ditched it next year.

Ultimately you're following the same principal as if you used DFJK. The other anon sounds like he needs to look at the keyboard or else he doesn't know what letters he's typing.
