What is BSD for over Linux?
big sweaty dicks
>>107038389I use it because there aren’t any license hijinks with using zfs with itI also use Debian too but I’m an Apple main
>>107038389I see 3 use cases:1: if you REALLY care about permissive licenses or are a business that don't want to deal with copy left (this is why Apple, Sony, and Netflix use the BSDs if I'm correct)2: if you are a super privacy/security autist, OpenBSD BTFOs Linux in terms of default security and mitigations, they've even pioneered quite a few security measures.3: if you just like fiddling around with kernels (this is why I've been using NetBSD lately, but even then its not on my main machine)Overall its probably not worth the jump from Linux, but I have to admit the architecture of NetBSD and Plan 9 are definitely better than Linux, I'm not giving up muh gaymes to have a slightly better designed systemoh yeah and zfs like >>107038406 mentioned

>>107038435There is a 4th, they are rock solid. You can learn easily via their handbook and manuals and return years after with almost everything feeling the same.FreeBSD reminds me a lot of the SysVInit days of Debian, it was pretty much an immediate translation. They core and base are super well integrated with the kernel, so you don't have bullshit like Ubuntu is having with replacing coreutils. They are great systems for embedded and servers and now that they are getting up to date in the network hardware support, I will probably replace all my personal servers with FreeBSD 15 and only use Devuan for things that only run on Linux.

>>107038406>>107038435Thanks both for your input. None of these things are particularly useful for me so I'll stay on Linux, but I appreciate being able to understand you and other BSD users a bit better. Also, from the OP image and some of what you've said, I have a better appreciation for their contributions to open source and security as a whole. Thanks BSD.

>>107039057>rock solidI've heard those two words repeated again and again when speaking about the BSDs for over 15 years now. I'm convinced it's just some trusim at this point. Like did anyone check if those systems are actually solid or if it's just a meme perpetrated by autistic contrarians that snub Linux?t. had a BSD phase in the early 10s
