Welcome to the 4chan /g/ Usenet General Thread!

>What is /usenet/?
Open standard protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on (http, irc, rss, ftp, etc). Not owned by corpos, not under govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection. They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed by all.
Some, like FTP are outdated and insecure. Others, like rss, irc, http, usenet are still glorious and wonderful open standards. Join us and discuss such topics on one such protocol:
NNTP, aka usenet.

>WTF IS USENET
Literally it means the Users Network. It’s an open protocol for posting and reading messages, organized by newsgroups. It's entirely decentralized, no single server, impossible to take down.
Today it is split between, binaries and text. The binaries part is what it’s known for today: piracy. The text part is forgotten and abandoned, until now.

>WHY POST ON USENET
It's open protocol, you can use any client you want or build you own. No costs, no subscriptions, no money. You can sign up through your ISP, or through eternal-september.org. Then you just need to install a client.

>THIS IS OLDER THAN MY DAD. WHY TF WOULD I DO THIS?
Because it's comfy.
Because it’s decentralized.
Because instead of feeding some corpo AI bullshit like discord, reddit or whatever, you can have a conversation with like minded anons in an uncensored, decentralized, and fun hackerman way.

>DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING?
No, you can use the aforementioned eternal-september.org with any client of your choice, or use the service of newsgrouper.org to access freely online (register to post).

>OK I’M IN - WHERE DO I POST!
Join us at alt.cyberpunk.tech!

WHAT CLIENT SHOULD I USE?
>Pan (gnome newsreader - Multiplat)
>Seamonkey
>Gnus for GNU Emacs
>Mozilla Thunderbird

>want to take a peek?
Online Based service @ newsgrouper.org is free and allows to post when registered. Also it can be used in any browser, even on Android!

That's giant bullshit we heard back in the day. This is always wrong. like usenet only has a few providers if govs want to take it down it means co-operation which happens through europol and interpol. the correct way is to turn usenet into a complete peer to peer system.

1: it already is
2: you are free to add further nodes to Usenet.

I looked some random newsgroup yesterday.
There is some pure schizo kino out there.
Found one where it's literally just one weirdo posting about stuff about aliens and personal gods and telling nobody about all the stuff he "divined" in the 90s.

Yeah this is the correct post image

What's your favorite indexers? I like omg and nzbs.in

Got a free tier account on althub. Been looking at pay options, but I don't consume media in a way to justify paying a sub. The binaries in after tend to be released faster and more consistently through other services. Mind you, if I paid for a better indexer, I might find what I'm after. Rock == hard place.

There just isn't much to talk about with Usenet
It just works
