Was IRC better than Discord?
>>

same energy actually

>>
>>107061393
>IRC
Less scope, less traffic and less drama

>Discord
tranny ideology ware, government spyware, false sense of security, messages/dms all read/censored, no security, more features.
>>
>>107061393
>Was IRC better than Discord?
yes.

it was great
>>
>>107061393
No, if it was it would have won. But it didn't, it lost.
>>
>>107061411
>>107061501
in what way was it better if you remove your milennial nostalgia for a minute?>>107061419
i see your point but isn't every program of this kind spyware nowadays?
>>
bash.org quotes were so fake.
>>
An IRC never asked me for my ID card, Discord however...
Remember when, back in the days, giving even the smallest and most microscopic information about yourself was considered dangerous and frowned upon; now they expect us to give our fucking IDs and store them in their unsecure servers, waiting only for hackers to steal them and sell them to the scammers.
>>
>>107061559
>i see your point but isn't every program of this kind spyware nowadays?
no
>>
>>107061393
It's still better than Discord (unless you're a simpleton).
>>
>>107061393
>Was
wdym was
>>
>>107061393
Man, I miss bash.org so much, loved reading the quotes there.

also apparently qdb.us came back just recently, after 6 years of being dead.
>>
>>107062717
>qdb.us
i forgot about this one. damn that's some nostalgia.
>>
Discord has a "UK age verification"
While IRC doesn't

Conclusion: IRC won
>>
>>107063095
i dunno, i feel like using IRC verifies you are 30+...
>>
>>107061393
IRC lacking persistence makes it a different tool. It's what imageboards are relative forums in the sense that chats there are ephemeral.
>>
>>107063193
>in the sense that chats there are ephemeral.

archives (as they are now) ruined 4chan. fuck you, Green Oval.
>>
As much as I favor technology that is kept simple, a lot of idiosyncrasies that make IRC feel so foreign nowadays are remnants of a web that was built around the limitations of a bygone era, obsolete by today's standards. While change for the sake of it doesn't necessarily furthers a cause, we can still make it comfortable to share stuff. Decades ago I went to a newsgroup, posting a question, and they demanded that I reveal my full name. Nowadays it would be considered dumb to do that online. Tying all your personal communication and identity to a certain service shouldn't be the way to go either. I think that classic static or socket-based web chats that don't require you to register are a sane middle ground between IRC and Discord. If you have something to share, you can embed content and others can see it instantly, or you configure the client to not show it. You can make a visually pleasing experience with CSS.

Of course you can do that all with IRC, but why the need for an extra client when you have it all in your browser already? It only adds overhead. Socket libraries are even built into browsers nowadays, so you can set up such stuff without hassle.

Why was my post deleted? Do I really sound like a robot? Maybe I don't belong on this board because I like to write too much.
>>
>shows everyone your IP address
yeah fuck IRC
>>
>>107063193
>IRC lacking persistence
In a way, so does Discord.
When I am troubleshooting random, obscure issues, walled off Discord shit doesn't show up.
And that's why I love BB forums.
>>
>>107063193
I believe there is an RFC to add persistence, though I don't think anyone has bothered to implement it in any seriousness.
>>
>>107061393
No. No it fucking wasn't. Im tired of this weird revisionism. IRC was dogshit to use compared to discord in every conceivable way. You MUH NOSTALGIA boomers need to fuckoff already

The only good use IRC had was pirating manga, which you can do x100 better on discord now with zip files
>>
Most IRC channels even lack freedom of speech because they attract the politically correct kind of FOSS enthusiasts.
>>
>>107063387
Discoverability is another issue altogether. Shits there but you don't know how to find it.
>>
>>107061393
It was worse in pretty much every conceivable way. The only good thing about it was that the protocol is open, but that doesn't change your experience at all because the protocol is barebones and sucks.

>>107061419
>less drama
Lol. Lmao.

>tranny ideology ware
Because IRC had no trannies and leftists kek.
>>
>>107063095
Discord doesn't have any age verification here either.
Maybe try living in a first world country.
>>
>>107063475
Trannies didn't exist prior to 2012 or so. You probably dont remember a world before tranny ideology since you're too young. But back then, DEI and CoC wasn't a thing. People castrating themselves werent a thing that was celebrated or worshipped around.
>>
>>107061393
yes.
no images in the channel.
no up/down/whatever voting of messages.
>>
>>107063516
>Trannies didn't exist prior to 2012 or so
IRC didn't just stop existing in 2012.
The difference you are trying to bring up is the difference in global culture, not the difference in technology. There is nothing about IRC that would repel trannies and attract them to Discord. I have seen quite a few trannies and other degenerates on IRC, and they got more and more frequent as time goes by.

>You probably dont remember a world before tranny ideology since you're too young.
I am pretty confident I am older than you.

>But back then, DEI and CoC wasn't a thing. People castrating themselves werent a thing that was celebrated or worshipped around.
This has nothing to do with IRC and we are discussing IRC here.
>>
>>107063559
The problem is that people who don't 100% agree with leftism get bullied out of basically every social gathering now.
>>
>>107063603
And how does IRC prevents that? Are we still talking about IRC?
>>
>>107063603
Problem is castration ideology. Which the admins of the discord have adopted. They are grooming children to be castrated into their cult.
>>
>>107063610
It doesn't. And a lot of the few remaining channels are filled with adherents to popular culture. Try being a conservative on a Linux-centered channel. You will be met with lots of resistance.
>>
>>107063640
Not even, rejection of the cult is seen as "evil" in their eyes. They are groomers.
>>
>>107061393
IRC is *still* better than Discord.
>>
>>107063495
>>Discord doesn't have any age verification here either.
Give it time.
>>
>>107063387
>>107063455
>join our Discord and read the instructions in #guide and follow the links in #resources and...

man if only there was some way to display pages on the web.
>>
>>107063636
remember when we were talking about conspiracy theory that they'll sterilize people and everybody was like "you're a schizo" and now trannies are doing it themselves and trying to make it cool?
>>
>>107063737
>and trying to make it cool
and going for everyone's kids. like...wat
