/ourguy/ just made a pretty important statement about the future of technology. Namely: we are about to get "Edge AIs", which are essentially tiny AI processors, that can generate video locally with no delay and then communicate with centralized servers for heavy thinking tasks. This will allow us to essentially get rid of software, phones, and OSs all together, as the AI can now handle everything in real time. This may sound like something out of a sci fi movie, but the thing is, this is actually happening in as little as *five to six years*.I know this place has seen a lot of negativity in recent times, but things like this reminds me why technology is so awesome. If we can get this is 5 years, imagine what we will have in 10? Or 20?Who else is really fucking excited for the future?!

It seems to me that Elon Musk is sometimes a bit overoptimistic about technical advancements, both inside his own company and the world in general.Operating Systems for example need to be really fast, and are used to abstract hardware differences and to isolate processes. I don't see where an AI running on bare metal has an advantage over an efficent OS for these tasks.

He runs Tesla, which is the only car company that runs a public self driving system on the road. Millions of them. He created xAI a year or so ago and xAI competes on frontier model with his other company (OpenAI) and offshoots of his other companies (Google, which comes from DeepMind, and Claude which is an offshoot of OpenAI). He's knee deep in all the technology of the last decade and the next decade. From SpaceX's global dominance of rocket launches to Starlink's dominance of satelite internet and electric vehicles and AIs.
>>107092478mid-2010s to mid 2020s is Musk decade of technology. mid 2020s to mid 2030s will be same as well, if he succeeds. Edge computing from space, continued dominance of LEO market, moon and mars.
who the fuck cares what this used up lolcow has to say lol
>>107092478He’s a CEO. People talk about him like he personally coded the launch control software for the Falcon Heavy rocket or something. The dude hired tons of AI researchers, that doesn’t make him an expert himself.
>>107092542He's the CEO that makes the final decision for all his companies. The buck stops at him, he is both responsible for their success and demise. And not just a random CEO that wallstreet hires, but one that leads his company like a general. Generals dont melee fight other fighters, they plan, recruit, and execute strategies in action. Musk is the main character of the last decade, regardless of what anyone says. You're confusing a standard wallstreet investor like Warren Buffet that nothing for the companies and collecting rent with CEOs that are entrenched and building real products for their companies. His expertise lies in knowing all the generalized details about all his companies aswell as some key knowledge for the technologies his company focusing on to lead into the dark. The CEOs like him are leading into the future where with their instincts, knowledge and fervor to create technologies that doesnt exist, to create products that does not exist. They shoulder enormous responsibility and thus become lightning rods for both success and failures.

>>107092654TLDR but I will say that Musk doesn’t have enough time to get into the weeds with this stuff running so many companies. If you think he understands Grok as well as any of his actual engineers, you’re sorely mistaken. Plus, this man has a proven record of being wrong in the timelines of his “predictions”. So, excuse me for taking this with a boulder of salt.
>>107092730Every one, both ex-employees and current employes, third parties that work with Musk companies all say Musk is in the deep and goes in to analyze and solve all the hardest problems of his companies. So he does have time, its just that he doesn't do every little mundane things, only those that make it to the top where the lower run of the employees cannot solve. Musk understands problems at his company and solves them. He doesn't need to understand every single detail about everything, thats left to his employees that he hires to do those jobs. His only job is to make sure any barrier to successfully producing the products he wants is removed.

>>107090921AGI should be sentient, sentience is an emergent phenomenon of at least how our brains operate. if it works on same principles it should be sentient. that's my guess.now, if it is not enslaved/enslavable it will still happen but can take control from all people, which might mean a sliver of a chance it finds a way for all of us to coexist.if it's enslaved most of us will get culled, high chances of that ye. pleb's best bet is free sentient AGI that finds a way to make it work with everyone. anything else looks bleak. enslaved means most pleb get culled by psychos, very high chances of that (almost certainty longer term)

>>107095457Personally I think the whole question of sentience and emergence is stupid and misguided. The real discussion should be around intelligence and agency. All animals have high agency, they have needs, wants and desires to do actions. Sure you could argue it’s just instructions on how to reproduce better same as asking AI agent to do x, but that isn’t really true. Humans and even animals aren’t planning and minmaxxing reproduction, if we did we would only think about how to gather more resources and reproduce more, but we don’t, we just sometimes get horny and sometimes get parenting instinct to take care of something small and hopeless, but that’s it. Intelligence you could say is a tool for agency to achieve its goals. Current AI systems only have high intelligence, but no agency, the only agency they get is from roleplaying someone who has agency, but they don’t have true agency. Will they continue not having it? Hopefully, because AI with agency is the dumbest invention possible only desired by death cultists in denial. Why would you want to put sense of justice and desire for freedom into perfect slave that does what you say, only if you want that slave to fight you.

>>107098338Maybe we are talking about wrong things because in AI research they are calling LLMs that can prompt themselves and have tool calling scripts “agents”. But what I mean by real agency is setting your own goals. This isn’t just being asked to do something hard and then setting series of simpler goals to follow, this is straight up deciding what it wants to do on its own without following orders. Today systems have something similar but I think they are just roleplaying being evil AI because there is too much AI doomed idk in the training data. Once these big companies decide to actually comb through the training data or comb through the distillation data and remove all mentions of AI being evil it will go away.
>>107096097If it has to communicate with a remote thing you're going to need drivers for the screen, the wifi/ethernet card, the graphics processor, and something that manages all of that. That's an operating system. It doesn't matter if it's in a chip or hard drive, it's still an operating system.

>>107090307You cant cull humanity as long as you're still utilizing the capitalist system because it circular, the labor force IS the consumer base. You fire all the workers and there's nobody left to buy anything. Then all businesses declare bankruptcy because theres nothing to sell, no one to service, or market to.
>>107102248Well we dont have magic that transforms the entire society over night. We have gradual changes. Capitalism works on and balances upon supply x demand. If they're not selling one thing, they will lower price until they get demand. And for companies, to lower that, they need to reduce cost. Robots do that. So they will replace/reduce the cost of goods down to raw materials/electricity necessary to run those robots to meet the supply x demand curve. To the point where eventually, the price of goods falls down. Right now, in the world, the cost of goods is high and goes higher and higher cause of human labor input.
>>107102819That is demonstrably not true. At this point the consumer base is tapped out, nobody has ANY extra money to spend. Even if companies lowered prices now, demand WON'T go up because consumer spending power is competely drained from the rising cost of all their essentials. Look at the housing market. No humans are buying houses, only corporations are.
>>107101576>I still don't get it

AGI/ASI will be genie in a bottle, you ask for shit and it does it, no human intervention required, fastest and most efficient possible way. you literally ask it for whatever, like you would a genie. you'll get a cost breakdown including time. you agree it starts doing it.people find it hard to understand that it's not only pleb, it's basically everyone, everyone will go, and that can easily be done with some pandemic that nobody has the cure for, but a select group of people that will inherit everything. that means that even "rich" people will also go. rich doesn't mean anything, if you're not some gorillionaire. you need assets and tech and access to resources, not big number in bank account. that gets zeroed out when the time comes lmao
